It was a different period of time thats all. Certain terms and names which are very derogatory now were terms of endearment and such. My father who will be 48 this year says when he grew up in PA they were just getting out of those times but they were still very much alive.

Its great they use first time actors, its like Clint is giving a wider variety of people a chance to act rather than using the familiar faced professionals. For that reason, its also 'feels' more realistic, as none of the characters (besides Clint obviously) have previous roles to compared to. Simply, an epic film.

I agree - this is the best movie I think I've ever seen. I'm a math teacher in Fresno and teach a lot of hmong students... so see the faces of many of them in the faces of the hmong in the film. in fact a bunch of them are from fresno although not necessarily my students. wow.

What is this critic talking about? The hmong actors actually did a pretty good job, especially the gangster, because that how all gangs around my hood act like from asians to mexicans. Ala John Wayne in "The Shootist", Eastwood should make this his last stand in front of the camera. An outstanding performance that leaves him nothing left to prove. Asian gangbangers rape Thao's sister and threatens the family,Clint who has terminal lung cancer decides to self sacrifice by getting shot by gangbangers and all the gangbangers go to prison.Here's the significance of title:in his will he leaves the Gran Torino to Thao instead of his heartless money hungry relatives who were waiting for him to just pass away from lung cancer.

What is this critic talking about? The hmong actors actually did a pretty good job, especially the gangster, because that how all gangs around my hood act like from asians to mexicans. What this critic need to realize is that she need to get off her uptight house and her high class neighborhood, take a walk around the ghetto, come back and tell me if that acting was not convincing enough...well if she made it back..... :)

She probably got terrorized and harassed by gangs in highschool because she wasn't a scumsucking welfare-eating waste of space like they were. Everyone who isn't completely worthless gets harassed like that, so im sure she has an idea of how gangs actually act (like a bunch of worthless apes).

Ala John Wayne in "The Shootist", Eastwood should make this his last stand in front of the camera. An outstanding performance that leaves him nothing left to prove. What a great body of work he has blessed all us film lovers with. Now just direct a select gem here and there, and enjoy yourself Clint. You deserve it.

Got my had on a screener copy...and simply loved it!Sure there are technically flaws and notably sub par acting from the young cast but arguably one of the best this year!
