  • I wish i could find a man like Nick Charles! That's a perfect marriage

  • "I won't stay in quarantine! I don't care who catches it!" Love it.

  • You left out two great ones, both from "The Thin Man:" Nora: "What is that man doing in my drawers?" and Lt.Gill to Nick: "Ever heard of the Sullivan Act?" Nora: "Oh, that's all right; we're married."

  • Actually that's a pretty sharp move at 1:45. If I'd been in Nick's bed slippers then I would have never thought of that.

  • Nora: Nick! Nicky!! You asleep?

    Nick: Yes.

Nora: Good, I want to talk to you.

    LOL! Nora's adorable.

  • I want a marriage like Nick and Nora Charles'. :D

  • i want a wife like Nora Charles!

  • @okla1959 Amen brother, to bad they dont make girls like that anymore.

  • @Cavillier1970 --- they do, but you have to be a detective like Nick Charles to find them. (And you have to be Nick Charles to hold onto one once you've found her.)

  • @Setebos I'd be happy finding one first, then I'll work at holding onto her. But you maybe right.

  • any ideas why he slugged her in the bedroom scene with the gun?

  • @STEPcoach He was getting her out of the line of fire.

  • They made marriage fun. I love the Thin Man series because there was such a warmth between the two characters.

  • They should be held up as the gold standard for an awesome marriage. I hate that fat-guy-skinny-wife or dumb-guy-smart-wife, or man is pussy-whipped, ex-wife is a bitch bullshit in modern media, and the total infantilisation of men and the depiction of women as shrill evil humorless harpies. We need more examples of good successful marriages where both spouses are equally cool people.

  • @Chizpurfle52595 hear! hear!

  • @Chizpurfle52595 -- Yes, it is said that millions of those famous golden marriages of the 30s and 40s were actually inspired and sustained by the Thin Man films.

  • From After The Thin Man you need to put up the clip of when Nick is at the long table pretending to have a discussion with a bunch of old men who are fast asleep

  • Myrna Loy is so adorable and cute in this. Where in the world can I find a girl like this?

  • I just heard that they are going to remake The Thin Man and Johnny Depp is being strongly considered to play Nick Charles and Rob Marshell is going to direct it.

  • @sanjac07 A formidable task since King Kong I'd say.

  • @sanjac07 Gosh I hope not.

  • i can watch classic movies for a living!

  • One of great detective series The Thin Man.

Another great series is the Topper series on a deary day w/ popcorn. B&W movies are great. Movies like Harvey to It's a Wonderful Life, to Bob Hope to Cary Grant .. Frankenstein to The Wolfman.. Great times in movie making.

  • i was watching an old movie on my laptop at work today, and a coworker came in. He turned his nose up at the black and white movie, and I told him he was crazy. Then I said, "you should watch the Thin Man series" and googled this.

I agree that Hollywood only makes crap today. The current batch of public schooled loser writers couldn't come anywhere near the genius of The Thin Man.

  • How come when Nora says "I was just a gleam, in my father's eye" in the first Thin Man right before they serve dinner to all the suspects, Nick gapes at Nora with wide eyes...? I'm young so I guess if that was suggesting something I missed it.

  • These movies are absolutely wonderful and I enjoy watching them again and again.

  • you are so welcome dawn i love sharing on black and white movies i was a theatre major in college and that was my era just let me know when you watch it and what you think

  • and look at it this way no blowing people up no sex just plain good old fashioned talent these are the movies that made me go into acting actors like this and cary grant and such i love the glamour of it all the men always wore suits no matter what and i love the ladies in there nylons and hats women just do not do that anymore

  • Such a lovely series! I love their wit and talent! It's incredible. Sometimes, I wish I lived in that era!!! :)

  • I love the Thin Man movies! Movies back then are so much better than the movies of today. Myrna and William were great together..

    Dawn

  • @10Dec1971 wernt they you sound like you know a lot about old black and white films have you ever tried arsonic and old lace with cary grant if not it is on you tube well last time i checked it was on here i promise you will love it

  • @jclutchman17 I will check that out! Thank you..

    Dawn

  • you sound like you know

  • love these classic hollywood films, so full of wit and charm!

  • "When you hear the chime, it will be exactly..."

LOL IRL! I love these two.

  • They are fantastic together.

  • hahahahahahahahahahaha I love the series of the thin man

  • @joecoyote42 Pull yourself together.

  • of course you know William Powells voice is the inspiration for Don Adam"s voice of Maxwell Smart..... love them and that dog...

  • One of my favorites isn't in here: Come, let's go to lunch, I'm thirsty.

    Love the whole set!

  • Finding witty lines in The Thin Man is like finding a sofa at the Serta Store. Might as well run the whole movie and be done with it. Sayyyy . . .

  • They certainly dont make films like The Thin Man anymore. Is there nything better than watching Myrna Loy & WIlliam Powell. and dont forget the Matini's

  • Ahh I've only seen the first 2 films. Waiting for tcm to show the next one so I can watch the series I love Nick and Nora they're so funny XP

  • OH MY GOD!

I've never seen these movies before, but this is brilliant!

  • This stuff is timeless. Nora is hot and Nick is suave. Warner Bros. celebrated the centenary of Myrna Loy’s birth by releasing the Thin Man movies to DVD in 2005. Yet the dialogue still sparkles.

  • LOL! "Nick & Nora"...my kind of people.

  • I have the whole set, including some old posters. I absolutely love their relationship, banter and humour. :)

  • Wonderful!! I love "The Thin Man"!!! Thank's for sharing :-)))

  • LoL @ 0:41, when Sheldon Leonard says "When you hear the chime it will be exactly", @ 0:52 the bald headed guy next to the deaf woman starts to laugh. I love when someone breaks character and cracks up, it's just as funny to watch someone try not to laugh.

  • @phattieg Isn't it William Powell?

  • @aqrose You're right, I didn't realize it until after I posted it, but I was like "well, someone will corrected me one of these days. It took forever for someone to catch that thought. Sad, but still, it's a classic, and great movie. I thoroughly enjoyed it!

  • Maybe George Clooney and Kate Hudson could do this kind of repartée??

    Or.....maybe not.

  • Lmao @ 1:45

  • "He didn't come anywhere near my tabloids" is not only one of the all-time-great film lines, it is also (unfortunately) a great argument for censorship. Had the writers been allowed whatever they liked, this line would never have been written.

  • I too love these old kinda films..Today they have too much special effects instead of trying to concentrating on great story lines and acting!

  • oh god I have to see this movie. this is so funny. Let's see if I can find it on torrent :)

  • somehow...the 20's and 30's seems more modern than the 40' and 50's...

  • In ways Nick's character reminds me of Dr. House's character on...House.

  • "It's not true. He didn't come anywhere near my tabloids."

I don't care how many time's I hear it, it still makes me laugh. <3

  • One of my favorites is:

Cop Good thing we got here when we did.

Nick: Yes. I might have missed getting shot.

  • It really makes me sad that all the good ones have left us.... or are leaving us. What a shame. What will we be left with? What we have now.....OH, God save us all!

  • I love the Thin Man series -- have th whole collection on DVD. I often mused as to who could portray Nick and Nora these days -- among the current crop of "movie stars". The answer -- NOBODY!

  • I'd love to have Myrna Loy serve my nuts...

  • I never listened to a dinner before...

  • hahaha, I can't believe they had lines like this back then. Totally witty. The last I knew of wit like this was the Naked Gun and Airplane type movies.

  • I love wit.

  • Oh I'm sure they'll get by Gilbert.

  • Priceless. No wonder that Hollywood never attempted to re-do the Thin Man films.. (not counting the TV series with Peter Lawford)..no one could fill their shoes, or their martini glasses!!!

  • Too cute! These two are the very reason I fell in love with classic movies when I was a kid.

  • oh my they are my fav on screen couple. the movies they did even the ones that wern't the thin man movies are beautifully funny. -oewnaynailf- he punched her to keep her safe if that makes sence, lol you should watch the movie. Thanks for posting it

  • Did he just punch that woman?

    LOL.

  • lol yea he punched her out to get her out of the line of fire

  • @kives1985 Yeah. ^^ To be fair, he wanted to make sure she didn't get in the way and possibly get shot when he attacked the dude with the gun. And she was only annoyed that she missed seeing the fight.

  • my names william powell!

  • Did he just punch her in the face?

  • Hearing these 2 cracking wise is a laugh a line! Love 'em!

  • This is probably the only Classic series that I have the boxed set of. The Thin Man series is absolutely brilliant.

  • I loved this!

I always love Willam Powell and Myrna Loy!

Waiter, will you serve the NUTS! :-D

Thank you for posting and thank your Kievest for sharing.

  • "when you hear the chime it will be exactly..." LOL

  • "He didn't come anywhere near my tabloids."

    Nice one. :P

  • My favorite wise-cracking duo! Nobody

    did it better...Thanks for posting!

  • Hilarious!

  • I enjoyed this.

    -------Ellen

  • That might have been the first use of "walk this way." ... Not sure..

  • Thanks for posting, that was perfect.

    Myrna was breathtakingly beautiful.

  • "walk this way" damn that shit's old... still stupid funny though. :-]

  • Ya, tis' the season...(smile) Thanks missboulay.

  • Their sarcastic banter always has me in stitches! Thanks!

  • One should always be grateful when they don't come anywhere near your tabloids. Yup, they sure made a perfect on-screen couple!

  • My personal fav:

Nora - How man drinks have you had?

Nick - This will make (waiter putting down their drinks)...six martinis

Nora - Alright would you bring me five more martinis? (taps the table) Line them right up here.

  • I love 'em!

  • They sure don't make them like Powell and Loy anymore. Thanks for posting!

  • "He didn't come anywhere near my tabloids."

Reminds me of "How he got into my pajamas, I don't know!"

  • myrna loy would give a dog a bone!

  • not only could they out wit the crooks

they could out joke and drink the crooks

  • "You may serve the nuts. I mean you mayu serve the guests the nuts" Lol Myrna is such a doll! and these 3 are such a great screen team! u cant help but love them

  • These two (and Asta) were the best ever.

    Sooo fekkin funny.

  • Ah when movies really were at the root and Heart of America...They just cant make'em like this? I enjoy these characters as much as Chuck Chan.

  • live for it

  • ROFLope

  • Brilliant writing! Comedies today don't come anywhere close to these types of character-driven movies.

  • Myrna Loy was a babe.

  • Ah. when great actors were abundant.

  • Great movies. You've gotta love Asta.

But how could you miss the "happy boithday" scene?

(and who the bejesus was comparing this to Twilight a while back?)

  • "He came no where near my tabloids."

  • Nick and Nora are too damn cool. Why don't people make films like these anymore?

I'm 15 and I adore the Thin Man series, its so much better than the massiviliy marketed predictable rubbish aimed at my generation.

  • Hollywood can't make films like this anymore because they don't have this kind of talent in today

  • @OTRNut I agree with you whole-heartedly! I can't think of an actress or actor who could convincingly deliver those lines or any lines like those! And it's a sad state of entertainment we have currently!

  • @OTRNut

Oh, there's talent there. Producers and filmmakers just aren't interesting in making films with such witty dialogue.

  • @OTRNut Oh, there's talent. It's just shoved aside so the men-children in charge can make everything look like a Maxim centerfold.

  • @OTRNut yep

  • yah well they wouldn't keep making that crap if our eneration didn't keep paying to watch it

  • @xXLuxAeternaXx It's nice to see some young people takng an interest in The Thin Man series. Your statement of the rubbish aimed at your generation is correct. Things are getting worse on a daily basis.

  • @Lockemeister What's worse is that most people assume everyone of my generation enjoys the rubbish - admittedly, the majority do, but I can't stand people assuming just because I'm young I have bad taste. But back to the Thin Man, I think its a criminally overlooked series - I'll rewatch the films and spot more jokes each time.

  • @xXLuxAeternaXx I'm 15 years old and I completely agree with you!

  • @xXLuxAeternaXx That figures--you even know how to spell "lux aeterna" correctly. :)

I wish there were more like you.

  • @xXLuxAeternaXx agreed

  • I heart those two. Their repartee is the marital conversation to which I aspire.

  • I always thought the dog's name was "Astur," she's just pronouncing it with New English flare.

  • You can find practically anything on You tube.!!!! When we were little, my father came back from the US with.... The Thin Man, Charlie Chan, Fred and Ginger++ and used the videos to supplement our, US English, lessons. I always loved Nora and Nick!

  • thank you for making this, so great

  • Great stuff.

  • William Powell has some great lines in his last film playing Doc in Mr Roberts.

  • This is my favorite series. Thanks for posting. Nick and Nora fantastic and their cute litte dog Asta, sweet.

  • ROFL! Go Thin Man!! ^.^ Awesome lines!

I love the one where Nick is saying who did it and Nora says "Oh Nickie, I can't stand it any more... Was it me?" rofl

  • love this series.. thanks for posting

  • Love the Thin Man movies. Thanks for sharing! :-)

  • The Powell/Loy combination is my favorite onscreen couple; they have to best chemistry! I love how flirty they are together yet still come off so smart and classy. It's far beyond other on-screen couples who are either just real misfits or way too sappy.

  • That was great! Loved the ending! They just don't have jokes like those or banter back-and-forth in movies these days:(

  • Absolutely brilliant little compilation; impossible to choose a favourite line!

  • Nick and Nora rock. Well done.

  • I'm only 15 & I LOVE The Thin Man series.. Nick & Nora have my dream relationshp !!! lolz

  • Thank you! Soooooo good! That's my dream relationship...witty, loving, and full of adventure.

  • The greatest movie couple!

  • Great- thanks! Watching your video is putting me way behind in my drinking.

  • I'm only 14 & I do believe this is THE best series EVER :D

  • I'm only 17 and you are right!! much better than Twilight :)

  • fair enough... I'd have to say the same about lord of the rings :)

  • lol my sentiments exactly and they are making the Twilight series and New Moon is on a rush schedule so they can release it next November (=

  • Twilight is the most terrible franchise in the entire world. So unfortunate that some many people think it's "well written."

  • such a great screen couple...love 'em

  • Still funny. They just don't make them like they used to. That's probably a good thing.

  • William Powell and Myrna Loy were so perfect together. I really can't think of a modern pair of actors that equal them. I'm a child of the 70s, but this makes me nostalgic for that time period.

  • hilarious! i love it! 5 stars

  • im only 19 and this is my favorite movie series of all time. Love it!

  • Some of the best and funniest lines in film history, ever!

  • He didn't come anywhere near my tabloids!

  • some of the greatest lines ever!! thanks for the video!!

  • "Work hard, honey--maybe you can get it out!"

Wow, I *need* to watch the series now.

  • TCM movies has a "thin man" boxed set. Fabulous!

  • BIG Loy & Powell fan!

    Love them and this video.

    Thanks:)!

  • William powell is awsome!

i seen all his movies with myrna loy

  • "walk this way sir...i'll try..." NOW THAT WAS FUNNY!!!

  • What a fun couple.

That scene at the end when Nick kisses Nora in the Pullman car as we hear "California, here I come!" on the soundtrack--how did they get that one past the censors??

  • Well no one had such a dirty mind like you, silly :P

  • Uh huh. Those screenwriters were all such pure-minded guys and gals.

Tell me, what would you do if you were a clever wordsmith working under the thumb of a studio tyrant? Churn out clean scripts or sneak in as many naughty bits as you could?

  • FYI, at 1:42 the dialog from the original Dashiell Hammitt novel read "Would you mind putting that gun away? My wife doesn't mind, but I'm pregnant and it might mark the baby."

  • Ha! That one is even better. I guess censorship had it removed from the script.

  • Hilarious!

  • I was just hit with a freight train of wit.

  • hahaha. i love these movies! they're the best!

  • am i weird for being 21 and thinking this beats out anything that was made during my time? lol great post.

  • No you aren't weird. I 21 and love these films too. ;)

  • of course youre not weird, I'm 30 now but watched these movies at 12. I still love them. I'm looking forward to introducing these films to my sons.

  • I watched a clip of this movie on YouTube & got the box set from the library. Loy & Powell made a great team!
