my iphone 3g has dead pixels. white screen of death, a broken home button and lock button, and broken ringer switch and crakced glass, water damage (but still turns on) and the warrenty is out on it :( i doubt i'll be able to get a replacement for it since it broke about ago year ago

So just an update, I'm still on my 32gb 3GS and on the fence about iPhone 4. The only reason why I'm waiting is the storage. 32 gb for me is not enough for me. I was hoping for 64gb but I guess my iPad will do for now.

This post is absolutely true. This replacement option is called a CRU or Customer Replacement Unit. In this case it seems the advisor set up the dispatch procedurally for Multi Replacements. Apple limited warranty states that Apple will provide service replacements at it's discretion, and will continue to do so a reasonable amount of times.Keep in mind that if there is not a good reason for a CRU such as 3 replacements or more that the advisors discretion will be needed. (customer satisfaction)

I've done troubleshooting with AppleCare and it failed they said they'd give me a refurbished and I told them I'd call back after deciding I have an apple store 300 miles away but it's a small apple store no genius bar so will they give me a new one if I show them proof I did troubleshooting with AppleCare. Hi. I was just wondering if this would work with my iPod touch. . I am still on warranty and the problem with it is that the bottom left corner screen is rising up and when I went to an apple store they didn't replace it and they just said it's perfectly fine. ok something this idiot doesn't know is that they don't tell you if its a refurb or a new one, not even apple employees know if they have new ones or refurbs ( ask your friends that work at an apple store, its true). First off I am not an idiot because the box I'm holding in the video is a brand new iPhone. Second, Its very simple to tell the difference between a refurb and a new phone. Refurb iPhones will come in either a white generic phone box or an iPhone box minus the compartment for the power chord and earbuds. The dead give away is that EVERY refurb iPhone 3G serial number starts with 5K. My upgrade had no basis on receiving the new phone, just luck of the draw on a friendly support specialist.

Applecare has nothing to do with it and I believe applecare like all warranty programs is a scam. You get a 1 year MFG warranty on the thing and that is what I envoked. Don't waste your money on applecare. Who the hell keeps a phone for more than the 18 month upgrade cycle anyway? Hell, broken iPhones fetch hundreds of dollars on eBay. You could use that money towards the iPhone 4 upgrade.
Posters are ragging on this guy. But truthfully, Apple's build quality sucks. I have a 3G only a few months out of warranty. I updated to the latest OS just a short while ago, and now my 3G is erratic. I had to switch it off to use the now damaged phone, and can't get the software to go back. Now they want me to buy a refurb for over 200 AND take my phone back. What a joke. If they offered me a new replacement for 200, and took my phone (which they will flip for 200) then that would be ok.

I got lucky when I got a replacement iphone. They didnt give me a refurbished one they said it was brand new and not only do I not have any problems with it, its probably better then my first one. I swear the screen is much more vibrant.
Check the serial number under Settings>About. If it starts with 5K then its a refurb. No matter, I've seen brand new ones with major defects so if yours is working then great!

I just called apple today 3/29/09 they said 3rd option is a Advanced replacement, with a $499 hold on your credit card they said i would be getting a Refurbished iphone not a Brand New OEM iphone in a original Box.
@rioschris What he did was an Advanced Replacement simply because he was able to keep the current iphone until the new one is recieved, so he wound't be w/o a phone for a couple of days. If he sent in his phone before getting the new one they wouldn't have put a hold on his credit card. The Adv Rep Program has nothing to with him getting a new phone vs a refurbished one.
So option 3 with apple repair, so they put a hold on your card until they get your old broken or damaged phone. do you have to send them back just the iphone or iphone+headphone+usb cable+wallcharger? does apple send you another box to ship your old phone back? please let me know thanks.

I called apple today about getting a replacement cause of dead pixels and i talked to a senior adviser because this is going to my fifth phone in just over a month and he never mentioned anything about sending me a brand new replacement, just a regular refurbished one again.
It's 100 differnce betweeen the 16 gb and 32 gb 3gs if I were you I wait till June for the new one to come out but regard less for average storage like 200-300 songs ten podcast and so on get the 16 gb if u want a thousan songs and more get the 32 gb
Absolutely. Looks unreal. I'm thought about getting the white one but it looks I can't figure out what that black grill thing is on it. Also it looks pretty feminine so I'll be grabbing the 32 GB black iPhone 4 in July when my wife's line is upgrade eligible. I will give her my black 32 GB 3GS. Just wish they had a 64 GB version. Probably to much for the chip cost. I bet the next one will be the same less a storage bump. I'll probably get an iPad 3G too. I can't help buying apple goods.
What can I say, I drank the Apple Kool-Aid and never looked back. As for your upgrade, here is what I would do. If you notice, the video shows me with a 16GB 3G, I sold that phone on ebay a few months after the video and got 450 dollars for it. I bought the 32GB 3GS at an early upgrade price for 500. Therefore my 'NET' upgarde price was 50 bucks. So if you want the iPhone 4, eBay your 3GS and I bet you get over 300 for it. the early upgrade price after 1 year will be 500 (Net ~200)
I have never seen or heard about the light problems. Wow. Anyway, I unknowingly charged my iPhone 3G with a frayed cable and it just died. I took it in to the Apple store, told them what I did and ~20minutes later they handed me a 'new' phone. Worked flawlessly. I say new with quotes just to say I'm not certain wether it's refurbished or not. I feel bad for anyone having to spend so much time with a dud. I do love my iPhone.
Check the serial number. If it starts with 5K then it is a refurb. New phones will be in the OEM pack with the cable, earbuds, power brick, etc. If it was in a little white or black box then its a refurb.

the ones they sell as refurbished are the same as "factory service model" replacement all start with 5k serial numbers. when you have a problem with your iphone there not gonna give you a new one everytime so they give you a replacement one which is refurbed. and a refurbed model is a model which extorier is brand new but the parts such as the battery or electronics inside are used but field tested

well i had a smilar problem with my 3g and i talked to a customer servicerep,about me having 6 defective iphones and the final problem was it not working showing itunes, and i got transfered to another customer service rep explained i had 6 malfunctioning iphones and she offerred me a 16 gb 3gs . i picked white and i put a hold on my credit card had the 3gs sent to me and i sent the defective 8gb back and no charges have shown on my credit card not even shipping charges.
I was kinda pissed when I recieved what I got when I got option 3, they sent me a Iphone (Refurb) and a Box to Put my Old Iphone Back In. I'm currently to get back in touch with the Senior Advisor who have sent me the iPhone to put in a order for a new iphone, which he said if they said you a refurb.
This worked! In fact Apple not only sent me a brand new iPhone, in fact they sent me a brand new iPhone 3GS! They upgraded me from the iphone 3G 16gb to the 3GS 16gb for free! They also are refunding the rest of my applecare from the 3G for $40. Yes apple gave me a new iPhone 3GS and $40, apple payed me to upgrade (awesome right). I have had it for a week and love it, especially since I didn't have to pay for it or have to extend my contract with AT&T!
You said they upgraded you from a 16 GB iPhone 3G to a 16 GB iPhone 3GS. o_o After so many number of exchanges, I think the customer can ask to pay extra to upgrade their iPhone 3G to an iPhone 3GS.
I don't know about that mostly because they are still selling brand new iphone 3g 8g. And they didn't tell me they were going to upgrade me from the iphone 3g to the 3gs. When I opened the fedex package I saw they sent me an iphone 3gs, I had no idea they would do that, and I didn't ask them to do that but they did... and I'm grateful.
Well they definitely cannot replace your 16 GB iPhone 3G with an 8 GB iPhone 3G. It just isn't right. The 3GS was the only available and logical replacement for your defective phone. Apple wants their customers happy. It's tough being ranked number one in customer satisfaction.
Your right but giving me a brand new upgrade wasn't that big of a deal, I had a problem with an at&t smart phone and they not only gave me a new phone replacement but the upgraded one. It just makes common business sense, if your customer has been having a lot of problems with your device, you should do something above and beyond. But Apple does have great customer service, the best thing I can say to anyone wanting this option is to be nice to apple people on the phone and they will help you.

Seems like you know alot about the warrenty. Lol. I have the iPhone 3Gs and Ive never dropped it or anything and its getting like, stress cracks and ghost scratches (The ones that look like spiderwebs on the plastic when its in the sun or a bright room) And there is a crack at the top from the earphone addapt, to the bezel. Would I qualify for a new phone?

just got off the phone with Apple. I'm on my 10th iphone replacement even after doing 2 "option 3" replacements. my current refurb, was having screen issues where the screen would push out "waves" when medium pressure was applied on a certain spot, and the ringer switch wasn't working properly. let me just say, apple has by far the BEST customer service than any other company I have ever owned products from. Within minutes, I had a brand new 3GS!! yes 3GS, not 3G, replacement ordered for me.
My speaker broke and my power button is stuck down. I havnt taken it into the store because im afraid they will try to tell me i dropped it because i have scratches on the back of the phone from it rubbing against surfaces like tables and keys in my pocket. Also, i am now afraid of getting the refurbished duds. Will I be able to get a brand new one using this method?
i had a defective speaker on iphone 3g after having it for about 7 months and went into the apple store, after making an appointment of course, the lady at the genious bar played a song and realized it was defective because the quality was so bad and she gave me a refurb pretty much on the spot. the phone that she replaced had nicks and scratches all over too. but the refurb i received was fine. hope this helps
Unless it has a ton of dust underneath I would say keep it at this point. If there are other issues, take it back. Because of how the device is designed, dust will get in there eventually. Trust me on this. The one I currently have, though free from the other defects, eventually has a few specks. I really don't even notice them. I may just ebay it and get the 3GS. Its still a great phone. No light leak, no dead pixels, solid buttons. Just one or two specks of dust from time to time.
Hate to be the guy who does it, but this isn't true. I work for applecare in the states and have been an agent in the iphone, ipod, and cpu departments as a tier 1 agent and a product specialist ("senior apple support specialist) . There is no option 3, the reason that Ron here got a new phone, is because apple doesn't like losing customers, so after certain conditions are met (such as multiple replacements) , we will replace just about any product. But again, there is no option
it may not be formally known as 'option 3' but there is an alternative option to get a brand new replacement. Didn't think it was a big deal to call out the formalities.

First off I am not an idiot because the box I'm holding in the video is a brand new iPhone. Second, Its very simple to tell the difference between a refurb and a new phone. Refurb iPhones will come in either a white generic phone box or an iPhone box minus the compartment for the power chord and earbuds. The dead give away is that EVERY refurb iPhone 3G serial number starts with 5K. My upgrade had no basis on receiving the new phone, just luck of the draw on a friendly support specialist.

Applecare has nothing to do with it and I believe applecare like all warranty programs is a scam. You get a 1 year MFG warranty on the thing and that is what I envoked. Don't waste your money on applecare. Who the hell keeps a phone for more than the 18 month upgrade cycle anyway? Hell, broken iPhones fetch hundreds of dollars on eBay. You could use that money towards the iPhone 4 upgrade.

Posters are ragging on this guy. But truthfully, Apple's build quality sucks. I have a 3G only a few months out of warranty. I updated to the latest OS just a short while ago, and now my 3G is erratic. I had to switch it off to use the now damaged phone, and can't get the software to go back. Now they want me to buy a refurb for over 200 AND take my phone back. What a joke. If they offered me a new replacement for 200, and took my phone (which they will flip for 200) then that would be ok.

I got lucky when I got a replacement iphone. They didnt give me a refurbished one they said it was brand new and not only do I not have any problems with it, its probably better then my first one. I swear the screen is much more vibrant.

Check the serial number under Settings>About. If it starts with 5K then its a refurb. No matter, I've seen brand new ones with major defects so if yours is working then great!

I just called apple today 3/29/09 they said 3rd option is a Advanced replacement, with a $499 hold on your credit card they said i would be getting a Refurbished iphone not a Brand New OEM iphone in a original Box.

@rioschris What he did was an Advanced Replacement simply because he was able to keep the current iphone until the new one is recieved, so he wound't be w/o a phone for a couple of days. If he sent in his phone before getting the new one they wouldn't have put a hold on his credit card. The Adv Rep Program has nothing to with him getting a new phone vs a refurbished one.

Today I'm returning my 3rd dud 3G 16GB iPhone. Each one a reject in it's own special way.
I'm still within my first (and LAST) contract because the iPhone is as reliable as a plasticine hammer.
Again I expect to be greeted at the Apple store by a clueless geek who has "never seen that problem before" and who will try to blame me for the fault and suggest that a "restore" will magically fix everything.
I'm gonna run this vid on every screen in the Apple store and crank up the volume.

I called apple today about getting a replacement cause of dead pixels and i talked to a senior adviser because this is going to my fifth phone in just over a month and he never mentioned anything about sending me a brand new replacement, just a regular refurbished one again.

It's 100 differnce betweeen the 16 gb and 32 gb 3gs if I were you I wait till June for the new one to come out but regard less for average storage like 200-300 songs ten podcast and so on get the 16 gb if u want a thousan songs and more get the 32 gb

Absolutely. Looks unreal. I'm thought about getting the white one but it looks I can't figure out what that black grill thing is on it. Also it looks pretty feminine so I'll be grabbing the 32 GB black iPhone 4 in July when my wife's line is upgrade eligible. I will give her my black 32 GB 3GS. Just wish they had a 64 GB version. Probably to much for the chip cost. I bet the next one will be the same less a storage bump. I'll probably get an iPad 3G too. I can't help buying apple goods.

What can I say, I drank the Apple Kool-Aid and never looked back. As for your upgrade, here is what I would do. If you notice, the video shows me with a 16GB 3G, I sold that phone on ebay a few months after the video and got 450 dollars for it. I bought the 32GB 3GS at an early upgrade price for 500. Therefore my 'NET' upgarde price was 50 bucks. So if you want the iPhone 4, eBay your 3GS and I bet you get over 300 for it. the early upgrade price after 1 year will be 500 (Net ~200)

I have never seen or heard about the light problems. Wow. Anyway, I unknowingly charged my iPhone 3G with a frayed cable and it just died. I took it in to the Apple store, told them what I did and ~20minutes later they handed me a 'new' phone. Worked flawlessly. I say new with quotes just to say I'm not certain wether it's refurbished or not. I feel bad for anyone having to spend so much time with a dud. I do love my iPhone.

Check the serial number. If it starts with 5K then it is a refurb. New phones will be in the OEM pack with the cable, earbuds, power brick, etc. If it was in a little white or black box then its a refurb.

question I got a replacement today (and don't have at&t service too lool but have applecare and used a friends sim card !) and they got a phone out of a white box but when I got the phone it was wrapped in the new plastic like an original iphone so does that mean its new and there are no light leaks or anything and seems to look brand new and work brand new as well so is it new or refurb??

the guy at the atnt store where i live and i got apple care warrenty and he said it covers everything and water damage was done to it and so i call apple care and they said they didnt cover it... so basiclly i have to buy a new iphone

the ones they sell as refurbished are the same as "factory service model" replacement all start with 5k serial numbers. when you have a problem with your iphone there not gonna give you a new one everytime so they give you a replacement one which is refurbed. and a refurbed model is a model which extorier is brand new but the parts such as the battery or electronics inside are used but field tested

i didnt even ask for the 3gs i just wanted a normal working iphone and they offered a 3gs, then i saw this video im like whoa other people get the same treatment, just goes to show you how above and beyone apple goes to keep customers happy, complety differnt from blackberry. i had a storm for a week and the talk button fell off they said i did the physical damage, i got a iphone and am happy with my 3gs

well i had a smilar problem with my 3g and i talked to a customer servicerep,about me having 6 defective iphones and the final problem was it not working showing itunes, and i got transfered to another customer service rep explained i had 6 malfunctioning iphones and she offerred me a 16 gb 3gs . i picked white and i put a hold on my credit card had the 3gs sent to me and i sent the defective 8gb back and no charges have shown on my credit card not even shipping charges.

3G: 8
3GS: 4
longest process but eventually had to downgrade to 3G 8GB.

I'm currently to get back in touch with the Senior Advisor who have sent me the iPhone to put in a order for a new iphone, which he said if they said you a refurb.

This worked! In fact Apple not only sent me a brand new iPhone, in fact they sent me a brand new iPhone 3GS! They upgraded me from the iphone 3G 16gb to the 3GS 16gb for free! They also are refunding the rest of my applecare from the 3G for $40. Yes apple gave me a new iPhone 3GS and $40, apple payed me to upgrade (awesome right). I have had it for a week and love it, especially since I didn't have to pay for it or have to extend my contract with AT&T!

I don't know about that mostly because they are still selling brand new iphone 3g 8g. And they didn't tell me they were going to upgrade me from the iphone 3g to the 3gs. When I opened the fedex package I saw they sent me an iphone 3gs, I had no idea they would do that, and I didn't ask them to do that but they did... and I'm grateful.

Well they definitely cannot replace your 16 GB iPhone 3G with an 8 GB iPhone 3G. It just isn't right. The 3GS was the only available and logical replacement for your defective phone. Apple wants their customers happy. It's tough being ranked number one in customer satisfaction.

Your right but giving me a brand new upgrade wasn't that big of a deal, I had a problem with an at&t smart phone and they not only gave me a new phone replacement but the upgraded one. It just makes common business sense, if your customer has been having a lot of problems with your device, you should do something above and beyond. But Apple does have great customer service, the best thing I can say to anyone wanting this option is to be nice to apple people on the phone and they will help you.

Seems like you know alot about the warrenty. Lol. I have the iPhone 3Gs and Ive never dropped it or anything and its getting like, stress cracks and ghost scratches (The ones that look like spiderwebs on the plastic when its in the sun or a bright room) And there is a crack at the top from the earphone addapt, to the bezel. Would I qualify for a new phone?
Any help without talking to those guys helps, I hate talking to them people at Apple.

I have no idea what to do, I have a cracked screen on my iphone, still works but its annoying. I work for ATT and it cracked at work (I install uverse, dont work at a store) because my company phone needs a new sim and I ended up using my personal for work. Now im eligible for an early (1 year) upgrade but the ATT site only has refurbished black 8gb 3G phones, no white, no 16gb, no 3GS. Its only 50 bucks but ill be forced to wait another 2 years to even think aboutt a 3GS. how can I get one now?

just got off the phone with Apple. I'm on my 10th iphone replacement even after doing 2 "option 3" replacements. my current refurb, was having screen issues where the screen would push out "waves" when medium pressure was applied on a certain spot, and the ringer switch wasn't working properly. let me just say, apple has by far the BEST customer service than any other company I have ever owned products from. Within minutes, I had a brand new 3GS!! yes 3GS, not 3G, replacement ordered for me.

My speaker broke and my power button is stuck down. I havnt taken it into the store because im afraid they will try to tell me i dropped it because i have scratches on the back of the phone from it rubbing against surfaces like tables and keys in my pocket. Also, i am now afraid of getting the refurbished duds. Will I be able to get a brand new one using this method?

i had a defective speaker on iphone 3g after having it for about 7 months and went into the apple store, after making an appointment of course, the lady at the genious bar played a song and realized it was defective because the quality was so bad and she gave me a refurb pretty much on the spot. the phone that she replaced had nicks and scratches all over too. but the refurb i received was fine. hope this helps

I'm on my 6th iPhone at the minute which is also faulty. I've had phones with dust, phones will uneven screens and ones with deal pixels.
My latest one is from AppleCare and also has dust :(
I'm going to have to try the Apple store again!

Unless it has a ton of dust underneath I would say keep it at this point. If there are other issues, take it back. Because of how the device is designed, dust will get in there eventually. Trust me on this. The one I currently have, though free from the other defects, eventually has a few specks. I really don't even notice them. I may just ebay it and get the 3GS. Its still a great phone. No light leak, no dead pixels, solid buttons. Just one or two specks of dust from time to time.

Hate to be the guy who does it, but this isn't true. I work for applecare in the states and have been an agent in the iphone, ipod, and cpu departments as a tier 1 agent and a product specialist ("senior apple support specialist) . There is no option 3, the reason that Ron here got a new phone, is because apple doesn't like losing customers, so after certain conditions are met (such as multiple replacements) , we will replace just about any product. But again, there is no option
