The problem here was the sensitibity of the elevator, u shouldn´t add that much weight, I bet that if u cut some weight u´ll catch all of them damm rats
I have caught over 600 HOSPs and 900 starlings between my traps and shooting them with my "air force condor" .22 air rifle. I can hit them up to 100 yards away with the air rifle and a great investment for the birds that are hesitant to come in too close. I found that they think it's safe at the back of the property so I pick them off from the back window.
The counterweight is set wrong on the trap you need to move the weights and bolt towards the bait area of the trap and this won't happen. I have one of these traps and had the weight set wrong too so just move the weight about 1/2" towards the elevator end of the arm.
In Mexico? The only thing endangered here are tourists. LOL. Of course we release the native birds. I caught a lazy Kestrel Falcon last week. He made it onto the see-saw but was too bigto get through the hole to his meal. They were literally scared to death. Had to take the trap down to help him out- no harm. Next time he'll catch his own I hope.
I also bought this trap from a friend. It worked great the first couple of sparrows but... after a while the sparrows would go into elevator and immediately back off and fly way as soon as they feel the elevator give a little... Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!
You should take down the trap for a week, or change the weight on it to make it so that it will go all the way down if it just barely touches it. Plus don't forget to bait! most important - put seed for a week then put it away and out the trap on its place.
It also helps to stop the trap from going down- they get used to sit and eat from bait- and next time they show up they are going down! See SIALIS for more tips....
I agree with blacklabradorlover1, that's a House Finch, a protected species. I too have this trap. Maybe 250 House Sparrows and 200 Starlings. Thanks for giving our native species a better chance at survival.
It's a great repeater trap and my Kestrels really appreciate the extra nutrition. I do quarantine the sparrows for two weeks before they enter the "gladiator aviary" for falcon training. Any sparrow that survives the aviary for ten minutes (with three falcons inside) is set free. I hope they ones aren't stupid enough to go back to the trap again! Thanks for the comment.
That was a female House Finch I think, but Im glad to see you got a male sparrow in the trap. This trap is great. I've caught well over 300 HOSP in my trap!
i believe it's not sparrow out smart the trap it is simply bit of a poor trap condtruction problems. you should make a complains to the maker.

Sparrows are bird butchers that is why he does not want to go in to a room with a sparrow.

obviously your door is not counter-weighted correctly.
shooterdude12 1 year ago
If the counter-weight is set properly, birds can't bounce or "walk up" the elevator like that.

My thoughts would be to GLUE the seed down onto the trapdoor thing, Iv tried it with dried dog/cat food and it would last a long time

you have to be careful not to 'dispose' of other birds!! House sparrows are not native and therefore are not protected under law.....
dancetalent08 2 years ago
the problem is the counter wait.smaller birds will not cause the thing to stay down enough for the bird to go through the hole to the other side.
