You can also have an alternative outfit when you have 120 shine. Just need to talk to the Pianta under the umbrella in front on the fruit shop (Delfino island).

never saved the game when I got 120° thing (star or shine depends on what game)

I have 119 stars on SM64 to maintain "normal triple jump"

and 119 shine on SM sunshine.

I can enjoy anytime I want to collect again that 120° #§@*
