When you mentioned Moulin Rouge it gave me a thought- when Moulin Rouge was released in Japan, was it subtitled or dubbed? I'd be curious to know if their subs contain info notes and whatnot by keeping it close to English or if they just translate into Japanese with Japanese jokes and Japanese meanings.
You picked the absolute worse fansubbing groups to point out. It's like seeing a group of black people in a gang and saying that all black people are members of gangs because you saw several black people in a gang.
Professional translators are paid. Fan-subs only profit in terms of respect and notoriety. They don't have the same incentive to be "invisible" in the credits or translation style.
Also, if a fan sub groups wants to try to educate the audience about Japanese culture that's their prerogative. I think it enriches the experience, personally. After all, we still hear the Japanese voices in the background, why not get a better understanding of the original phrasing?
I Love current fansubs and the people that provide them as much as the original creators.
I Appreciate and Enjoy every aspect you seem to find contempt for. I've never mistaken an english background translation as something meant to be there originally. To the contrary, I appreciated that it was blended into the frame and found it less distracting than wondering what everything said.

Never paid attention to the fansub credits. I've experienced fansub personal comments to the anime.. which was a bit strange with random emotes all over the place. Agree with the flashing subtitles. Totally distracts me.

Most of the "notes" and translation of japanesse words on signs are helpful, if there are done right and don't take up the whole screen, of course. When I watch anime fansubbed, I'm into the anime, not the subtitles; they don't distract me at all. So, maybe you can't do two things at once, but I can.

it was such a perfect idea to apply them to the Lord of the Rings movies, it makes it instantly clear how distracting and silly it is to put all that extra crap on the screen.
Another thing that annoys me is when people say that there is no swearing in english dub when there is in the japanese version when the fansubbers probably just add in swear words for the hell of it. And when they complain that official manga releases are different translations to what they have read online.
i agree with you on the problem with font. a lot of them are hard to read. i think there should be three basic colors yellow, white, and black depending on which one stands out best from the backround makeing it easyer to read. i have no problem with fan subs when done right, and for shows that are not licensed.
I agree with you on most points, I can understand the faux super-imposing. But it's not really as bad as walking into a museum and writing your name over Picasso's; slight exaggeration.
That said, I would like to know what some Japanese characters on signs say. Even if it is a cluster-fuck of plain text. I wouldn't want it super imposed, though.

it is not easy to find translators and people who are good at editing these stuff. Times change, it's nice to see the colorful anime texts and normally we would watch animes more than once so yes we have plenty of time to look at the anime itself. Besides, those little notes on the screen you hate so much, have *gasp* helped me improve my japanese vocabulary tremendously. I disliked your videos.

Also, any Japanese speaker, native or learning the language, will tell you that anime is absolutely shit when it comes to learning Japanese since they don't contain a lot of everyday speech or phrases that are commonly used in conversation. OtaKing wasn't objecting to notes, more their constant taking up space and distracting your attention.

I don't agree with the color font chosen for each character, it helps who is speaking allot better then one. Total misconception Otaking is spurring on this.
On-screen translation are able to be read specially from Otaking who writes Japanese. This thinking is one-sided since he/she is able to read it and finds it insulting to desecrate the artwork when other languages won't be able to read it without a TL whether on it or on the default line.
I can't say it the groups now a days are any better, I do like reading the Kanji lyrics more then reading the Romanji or English lyrics during OP/ED sequences.
To be fair tho, if they are soft-sub so you can chose to turn off the TL if the group offers more then one TL track.
Those signs are important for me to understand if I'm not able to read it, doesn't matter how they do it - I do agree with Otaking groups over do their TL a bit too much.
Truth is, if it wasn’t for fan subs -- most people would be just watching raws and not understanding any of the dialogue, or even worse, listening to a dub.
Still, your point is well made; some groups try too hard to put their imprint on the anime.
I like on screen text. I dislike when on screen text is not translated, I feel like I am missing something. I do agree that it should not be superimposed over the artwork though.

What you blithering about wood engraved and english text on grave stones...I think most viewers understand its an somewhat unobtrusive way of translating the text so we understand - as many times on screen text is an integral part of the story. Like someone else said, Jap viewers could read it, why shouldn;t we be able to?
While the example in this are over the top and horrid, I like it when subtitles (while still using normal font) have them in different colours depending on who is speaking. I have bad hearing and still being able to tell who is speaking even when you can't see mouths is a great help.
When I showed this to my roommate he said that american companies that release the series in the US put their names above the Japanese employees too, so it was just as bad. I was too stupid at that point to realize the companies have a right to, they actually paid for the damn thing.

This is stupid right from the beggining. You can't compare something without sound, with something that has sound. You can't compare a game with an anime, you can't compare dialogues from a fighting, kindof drama videogame, with anything esle. You can't compare thigns from 20 years ago, with things from this timeframe. You just can't do any of the stupid things it seems you wanted to do.

@nachotee Why *can't* he compare that stuff? It's still an English localization of a product meant for a Japanese audience. Also, FF7 was only 14 years ago, and did have sound. Yes, the official translation was lacking, but it would've been even worse if it had followed the video's example.

You can't compare a game with an anime because it's a different media, things work differently; comedy anime for example will usually make several puns using honorifics and pronunciations and that kind of stuff; games wont. And no, ff7 had no voices, I'm pretty sure about that.
@nachotee The wrapper may be newer and different, but the content is still the same. When I watched an FF7 LP, I couldn't help but notice how much the text resembled anime dialogue lines I'd heard/read in dozens of series. It doesn't matter if some actor reads the lines out loud or not, a Japanese script is still a script. And far from every anime is a wordplay-heavy comedy; sci-fi/fantasy anime like Scrapped Princess would be quite comparable to FF7.
I won't say it's all wrong or all right since you make a few valid points. But shallow coldreading is hardly the best way to give an informative view on a subject. You failed to take into any consideration why half of the stylistic choices you criticized are implemented, in favor of taking every effort to tie everything back into your own preconceived notion that it could only possibly be for getting attention. Doesn't help that you went out of your way to choose the worst possible examples.
Not to mention the painfully forced attempt to get half your analogies to work and the gratuitous self-embelishing use of your own little exaggerated subtitles on various live-action films doesn't so much make a point as it does scream "Oooo, look! I can intentionally make bad subtitles, this clearly provides evidence to my argument." I understand it's an easy way to get popularity points with ignorant viewers, but it's hardly subtle and it makes you look bad.
1:00 Well, they are doing it for free, they don't put a gun on your head and say "WATCH IT". Besides, I like the name of attacks to be left untranslated. Not only when they are in japanese (for example, Crocodile used a mixture of French, English, Italian and Spanish words in his attacks).
Some things I'm cool with, but it does seem translators try to take a little too much credit for translating. Like watermarking in manga, that is pretty much imposing on the original creators work. Though I do understand the deal about how people will steal it and claim it as their own.

Fansubs used to promote people to buy the anime now it seems to me that the fan subbers are trying to take credit for anime and people are not buying it anymore because they don't want to spend money. It's really a shame that the anime creators work so hard to get hardly nothing for their anime because people are stingy.

Disappearing lyrics are bad, but I haven't been seeing them much. I haven't seen them because YouTube and Hulu have a wealth of free and legal subbed and dubbed anime posted by the companies that distribute them.
Fansubbers who do anime such as One Piece and ruined it completely, should not be fansubbing at all. Why crowbar names on it? This is amateur fansubbing. Professional subbing is when you put on a string of text, and left it that way, all in plain.
I don't want to get ahead of myself, because you may leave out the fact that at the time anime's were first fansubbed you may have had to pay for them in hobby shops and now they're completely free, someone is offering you a service completely free and you seemingly don't appreciate it at all. Some people don't care about the Japanese words left in and simply don't mind, or feel that that is more true to the series. Either way, it's the subbers time and effort so they should do what they want.

Though all good points were made in this vid, no one is really complaining I'm afraid. The reason why is they get to watch their favorite shows for free and either put up with the styles or just don't care as long as they can watch it in on form or another, without paying as well. So complaining about it is as effective as just posting a sign. But I actually am learning about how proffesionals sub animes and have been inspired to buy more anime DVD's to support them than watching sub versions.
I disagree on the things he says from 5:55 - 6:20. He keeps going on about giving English audiences the same experience as what the Japanese originally got. Problem is the Japanese can read Japanese and most Americans can't so not translating on-screen Japanese writing into English isn't fair to us over here. Watching an anime where writing in emails, websites, signs, book covers, etc is not translated is frustrating ESPECIALLY when it is important to the story.
Also I quite like the fancy fonts and effects during openings and endings. Yeah yeah, I'm a heretic or whatever. It's neat. And I like the translations overlaid on the image itself, I don't find it distracting at all and I'm glad they do it. I can't fucken read japanese, I don't know what the hell it's written there - I'm happy they translate it for me.
Ech, while I agree about translator anonymity, you're forgetting fansubbers don't get paid for doing it and that they're quite often kids. And they want to be recognized for their work, for the effort they put in doing this stuff. And with the quantity of anime available and subbing groups doing this, it's only understandable. Whine some more, or do it better and show them how to do it right.
It's obvious that you're looking for the worst examples of things. When you display extravagant fansub group titles, the karaoke subs are fine. When you display bad karaoke subs, no one's name is being covered in the credits. No, no, the best thing about this is that you dislike translations of signs. If what the text says was immediately apparent to the original viewers, why shouldn't it be apparent to the new ones? If the sign is important, why not?
@Totalidiocy You're missing the point a little. He doesn't dislike signs being translated. He just dislikes the "fit text in with image" fansub method, and believes they should be done in the "Note at the top of the screen" method. Which of course is not feasible for some scenes and some shows like PPD and SZS in general.
@DrunkSamurai I did notice the TL note hate, but there's a difference between a translation note (which usually explains some joke, cultural element, or completely irrelevant information), and a "translation in a note" of onscreen text. See the examples at 6:37. Again, not always practical depending on the show, but it's better than nothing.

I actually prefer these words to be digitally replaced with english words, which many fansubbers are actually having success with. Again the guy is comparing movies in which people are singing in English, a language that we all understand. Of course they would translate it in the official subbed version of a movie in France for example. I've already watched a movie in a cinema with French subs, and i can assure you they do that . Even official anime subs do that.
But i agree, most words shoud be translated (like Attacks and all possible words that can be translated into English without denaturing the whole spirit of the Anime).
What's the problem with effects? During a battle i just love to see differents style of subs (some portuguese subber of Digimon Savers even added whole 3D objects(like Fire etc) to the subs that perfectly fit with the serie)
There's still many people doing great jobs with quality fan subs... of course they are only available like 2 or 3 weeks after the japanese release (sometimes even a whole month), but quality rules. The problem is finding those quality-sud teams.
But i don't mind about the honorific things to be honest, people know what they mean. About notes and explanation notes OF COURSE THEY ARE IMPORTANT, Viewers of those subs usually AREN T JAPANESE damn it. We don't understand anything otherwise
Keeping honorifics just makes Japanese sound like it is untranslatable, which is absurd. It should be about finding equivalents. For instance, you see stupid things like Yamada-Sensei. Why does sensei have to remain intact? Why not just make it Mr. Yamada if it is a guy and Ms. Yamada when it is a female teacher? Furthermore, a few notes in subtle quantities is fine, but the problematic notes are those beefy ones where you actually have to pause to read, which interrupts your viewing.
@dirofreak Then put the translation notes on a separate text file, it's distracting when it's on the screen like that, and usually I end up having to pause the video just to read the whole thing, which just slows me down and it gets annoying.

Yes it is distracting and if you don't find them distracting you have a some very good focus because I can't read two lines at the same time. Also having to pause when you're watching something just to read it all is something i can miss.

You didn't answer the question. I know what it is but what the word is when written is irrelevant. It sounds the same to the ear. Especially for fansubs where most of us understand a small amount of Japanese. If you're paying attention you know what he says, why have the subtitle?

Otaking is basically completely right. The only thing I'd disagree with is the superimposement of the english translations on things. It's unobtrusive and lets the viewer know what's going on without knowing the actual writing. It's certainly not a perfect solution, but it's the best thing we have. The alternative would be to just sub it normally, which is also ok, but it's not as focused.
@XenonZaleo he is but this is why I have a hard time watching fansubs for Super Sentai (japanese power rangers). Half the special names, honorifics e.t.c are left in Japanese and after having watched his doc, I can see most fansubs are far too literal and don't flow well imo
I agree lots of text sucks to read, but I disagree at about 8:12. I know everyone can do without the sub on the left (the actual Japanese), but I have no problem with the others and would prefer that over nothing on the screen, like at 8:32. I want something if I'm watching it with subtitles. By that I mean a translation. I wouldn't want to watch the Macross song because I have no idea what she's saying without a translation. I also usually like a "singalong" sub (Hiragana) so I can sing it too.
This is the primary reason I have switched off of anime except dubs and to mainly manga. Manga is better generally all though it does place text outside speech bubbles and leave some words untranslated, it's still much easier on the eyes in manga to have text where it shouldn't be and it's rare.
It's a good thing that flashy ~fabulous~ karaoke it not that trendy nowadays. Though I don't agree with you on sign translating, I think that looks good in most cases (though not on a grave).
But I also agree with Tatsu on a point. I think sign translations can be integrated - as long as they're not distracting. If I don't have to focus at the bottom of a screen, instead of something centered, then it's all the better. Especially if the original audience was supposed to understand what was written. The gravestone was particularly unobtrusive and clear.

my favorite sub:
ARIAL with white with black edges. (easy to see in both dark and light)
other bright colors like yellow or light blue is fine too, but still have black edges.
and NO EFFECTS! i will assure you, your fansub group will be sought after.

I agree with what you say on some parts, but dude, come on! This isn't really a "Documentary"; it's more like a rant on fansubbers. If you hate them so much, just go and watch the dubbed version!
Most of the "notes" and translation of japanesse words on signs are helpful, if there are done right and don't take up the whole screen, of course. When I watch anime fansubbed, I'm into the anime, not the subtitles; they don't distract me at all. So, maybe you can't do two things at once, but I can.

i agree with you on the problem with font. a lot of them are hard to read. i think there should be three basic colors yellow, white, and black depending on which one stands out best from the backround makeing it easyer to read. i have no problem with fan subs when done right, and for shows that are not licensed.

I agree with you on most points, I can understand the faux super-imposing. But it's not really as bad as walking into a museum and writing your name over Picasso's; slight exaggeration.
That said, I would like to know what some Japanese characters on signs say. Even if it is a cluster-fuck of plain text. I wouldn't want it super imposed, though.

I think the behaviour may stem over from fan manga-translations where the practice is more common, for things like onomatopoeia or signs.

it is not easy to find translators and people who are good at editing these stuff. Times change, it's nice to see the colorful anime texts and normally we would watch animes more than once so yes we have plenty of time to look at the anime itself. Besides, those little notes on the screen you hate so much, have *gasp* helped me improve my japanese vocabulary tremendously. I disliked your videos.

Also, any Japanese speaker, native or learning the language, will tell you that anime is absolutely shit when it comes to learning Japanese since they don't contain a lot of everyday speech or phrases that are commonly used in conversation. OtaKing wasn't objecting to notes, more their constant taking up space and distracting your attention.

I don't agree with the color font chosen for each character, it helps who is speaking allot better then one. Total misconception Otaking is spurring on this.
On-screen translation are able to be read specially from Otaking who writes Japanese. This thinking is one-sided since he/she is able to read it and finds it insulting to desecrate the artwork when other languages won't be able to read it without a TL whether on it or on the default line.
Bit by bit this Documentary has become Ranting.

That One Piece translation work is horrid.
I can't say it the groups now a days are any better, I do like reading the Kanji lyrics more then reading the Romanji or English lyrics during OP/ED sequences.
To be fair tho, if they are soft-sub so you can chose to turn off the TL if the group offers more then one TL track.
Those signs are important for me to understand if I'm not able to read it, doesn't matter how they do it - I do agree with Otaking groups over do their TL a bit too much.

I like on screen text. I dislike when on screen text is not translated, I feel like I am missing something. I do agree that it should not be superimposed over the artwork though.
I dont mind honorifics either, as long as they are not stupidly over done or in your face, but that is only because they mean something to me, and im pretty poor at picking up the vocals.
And yes. I really don't like my screen filled with subtitles, it gives it a totally different feel.

While the example in this are over the top and horrid, I like it when subtitles (while still using normal font) have them in different colours depending on who is speaking. I have bad hearing and still being able to tell who is speaking even when you can't see mouths is a great help.

You can't compare a game with an anime, you can't compare dialogues from a fighting, kindof drama videogame, with anything esle. You can't compare a game with an anime because it's a different media, things work differently; comedy anime for example will usually make several puns using honorifics and pronunciations and that kind of stuff; games wont. And no, ff7 had no voices, I'm pretty sure about that.

When I watched an FF7 LP, I couldn't help but notice how much the text resembled anime dialogue lines I'd heard/read in dozens of series. It doesn't matter if some actor reads the lines out loud or not, a Japanese script is still a script. And far from every anime is a wordplay-heavy comedy; sci-fi/fantasy anime like Scrapped Princess would be quite comparable to FF7.

Some things I'm cool with, but it does seem translators try to take a little too much credit for translating. Like watermarking in manga, that is pretty much imposing on the original creators work. Though I do understand the deal about how people will steal it and claim it as their own.

Fansubs used to promote people to buy the anime now it seems to me that the fan subbers are trying to take credit for anime and people are not buying it anymore because they don't want to spend money. It's really a shame that the anime creators work so hard to get hardly nothing for their anime because people are stingy.

I don't want to get ahead of myself, because you may leave out the fact that at the time anime's were first fansubbed you may have had to pay for them in hobby shops and now they're completely free, someone is offering you a service completely free and you seemingly don't appreciate it at all. Some people don't care about the Japanese words left in and simply don't mind, or feel that that is more true to the series. Either way, it's the subbers time and effort so they should do what they want.

Though all good points were made in this vid, no one is really complaining I'm afraid. The reason why is they get to watch their favorite shows for free and either put up with the styles or just don't care as long as they can watch it in on form or another, without paying as well. So complaining about it is as effective as just posting a sign. But I actually am learning about how proffesionals sub animes and have been inspired to buy more anime DVD's to support them than watching sub versions.

I disagree on the things he says from 5:55 - 6:20. He keeps going on about giving English audiences the same experience as what the Japanese originally got. Problem is the Japanese can read Japanese and most Americans can't so not translating on-screen Japanese writing into English isn't fair to us over here. Watching an anime where writing in emails, websites, signs, book covers, etc is not translated is frustrating ESPECIALLY when it is important to the story.

And I like the translations overlaid on the image itself, I don't find it distracting at all and I'm glad they do it. And they want to be recognized for their work, for the effort they put in doing this stuff. And with the quantity of anime available and subbing groups doing this, it's only understandable. It's obvious that you're looking for the worst examples of things. When you display extravagant fansub group titles, the karaoke subs are fine. When you display bad karaoke subs, no one's name is being covered in the credits. No, no, the best thing about this is that you dislike translations of signs. If what the text says was immediately apparent to the original viewers, why shouldn't it be apparent to the new ones? If the sign is important, why not?

He just dislikes the "fit text in with image" fansub method, and believes they should be done in the "Note at the top of the screen" method. Which of course is not feasible for some scenes and some shows like PPD and SZS in general.

@DrunkSamurai I did notice the TL note hate, but there's a difference between a translation note (which usually explains some joke, cultural element, or completely irrelevant information), and a "translation in a note" of onscreen text. See the examples at 6:37. Again, not always practical depending on the show, but it's better than nothing.

But I actually like it when they put translations on the art work, but ONLY if you NEED to know what it says to understand the show. I actually prefer these words to be digitally replaced with english words, which many fansubbers are actually having success with. It gives you the same experience as the original audience, and isn't distracting.

Again the guy is comparing movies in which people are singing in English, a language that we all understand. Of course they would translate it in the official subbed version of a movie in France for example. I've already watched a movie in a cinema with French subs, and i can assure you they do that . There's still many people doing great jobs with quality fan subs... of course they are only available like 2 or 3 weeks after the japanese release (sometimes even a whole month), but quality rules. The problem is finding those quality-sud teams.
But i don't mind about the honorific things to be honest, people know what they mean. About notes and explanation notes OF COURSE THEY ARE IMPORTANT, Viewers of those subs usually AREN T JAPANESE damn it. We don't understand anything otherwise

Keeping honorifics just makes Japanese sound like it is untranslatable, which is absurd. It should be about finding equivalents. For instance, you see stupid things like Yamada-Sensei. Why does sensei have to remain intact? Why not just make it Mr. Yamada if it is a guy and Ms. Yamada when it is a female teacher? Furthermore, a few notes in subtle quantities is fine, but the problematic notes are those beefy ones where you actually have to pause to read, which interrupts your viewing.

No one really has a good reason to have it there though. I was just wondering why they bothered other than so they can add those flashy subtitles.

Otaking is basically completely right. The only thing I'd disagree with is the superimposement of the english translations on things. It's unobtrusive and lets the viewer know what's going on without knowing the actual writing. It's certainly not a perfect solution, but it's the best thing we have. The alternative would be to just sub it normally, which is also ok, but it's not as focused.
But outside of that one point, bravo.

@XenonZaleo he is but this is why I have a hard time watching fansubs for Super Sentai (japanese power rangers). Half the special names, honorifics e.t.c are left in Japanese and after having watched his doc, I can see most fansubs are far too literal and don't flow well imo

I agree lots of text sucks to read, but I disagree at about 8:12. I know everyone can do without the sub on the left (the actual Japanese), but I have no problem with the others and would prefer that over nothing on the screen, like at 8:32. I want something if I'm watching it with subtitles. By that I mean a translation. I wouldn't want to watch the Macross song because I have no idea what she's saying without a translation. I also usually like a "singalong" sub (Hiragana) so I can sing it too.

This is the primary reason I have switched off of anime except dubs and to mainly manga. Manga is better generally all though it does place text outside speech bubbles and leave some words untranslated, it's still much easier on the eyes in manga to have text where it shouldn't be and it's rare.

It's a good thing that flashy ~fabulous~ karaoke it not that trendy nowadays. Though I don't agree with you on sign translating, I think that looks good in most cases (though not on a grave).
And the LotR part was hilarious XD

The gandalf thing was hilarious.
But I also agree with Tatsu on a point. I think sign translations can be integrated - as long as they're not distracting. If I don't have to focus at the bottom of a screen, instead of something centered, then it's all the better. Especially if the original audience was supposed to understand what was written. The gravestone was particularly unobtrusive and clear.
