The Film's name in the original is "Out of Rosenheim", but since the Gringos wouldn't understand that, it was renamed "Bagdad Café".
I remember traveling through Spain a year after the movie came out, and someone blasted the song out of the window when we parked up at the monastery Montserrat.
Just had to hear it again. Thanks for the upload.
Watched Bagdad Cafe and was charmed by the beauty and simplicity of it and it's characters but hearing this song... listening to this voice, just took my breath away. Jevetta's voice is so soul piercing. Loved loved loved it. Both movie and song will not be forgotten...
when my mom was still alive i used to drive her nuts with the movie over and over I watched it. Now that she's gone I wish she would respond to my call...Everyday I am calling her..r.i.p mama <3
It's painful to know that 18 people dislike this song. This song has helped me through some bad times and it's one of the most comforting songs I know.
No disrespect ment toward other talented artists who re-did this piece, this voice reached me in the deepest way, no one else comes close it's amazing, really amazing.
This has the same effect as "always and forever" had on me.
I remember it seemed to pop up here and there, then once the movie was scrolling it's final listings, this song finally was played in full, the folks who were heading out stopped and turned around and listened to the complete piece, some even went back to their seats and listened.
This song really moved me when I heard it when Bagdad Cafe' came out back in 87, always wanted to find this, didn't look to be honest until today, figured it anywhere I can find it it'll be on YouTube, sure enough I found it, got it and am very glad to have found it in it's entirety,
@starquant well maybe this will help, Jevette Steel comes from a gospel background, in a way of speaking its like she's singing a hymn, but still it's considered lite blues ...
My mother and I both heard this song together and fell in love with it. Now when I hear it I think of her in Heaven dancing to this. She passed away 2 years ago and everytime I hear this song I will think of her
This is my all time favorite song! I loved the movie as well (even though I was like 6 when it came out), but the song ALWAYS stuck with me! Time to look for the recording!
First heard this lovely song being rehearsed by George Michael on The South Bank Show. Then I found this, the definitive version IMHO. Great Fender Rhodes sound too.
I remember hearing a portion of this song in quite a few AT&T commercials. It hypnotized me into wondering what the song was and who sang it. But when I got a newsletter from my local jazz music radio station, I learned the song's title and artist. I was so glad to find that information out.
When I first heard this song in theaters, I tried in vain to find the CD for the song. Listen to every radio station to hear this song and that voice....and years later, had to resort to taping it on a VHS tape, just so I could blare it as loud as I can and listen to a song that has haunted me for almost a decade. I LOVE THIS VERSION so damn much, you have no idea. Thank you for posting it.

Oh my goodness, you made me burst out crying when I read your post. Here I am feeling bad for having to live at home with my mother, and you are not at HOME at all. You did not bother me, You made me know that we will have victory. We are not inferior, just going through a storm. And I thank you!
Thank you for putting this song up. I saw the movie Bagdad Cafe once when I was young and this song gave me the chills back then- the same as now. The movie was pretty good too.
I love her voice...didn't know she sang over the rainbow, and this little light of mine in my favorite movie, CORINA CORINA...oh wow...what a blessing
A law should be passed the Jevetta should be the only one who can sing this song. Fabian--come'on, you kidding? Even Celine can't sing this song. This is Jevetta's and that's it!
I finally drove down the Mojave desert to Route 66 and visited THE cafe. Andree, the owner was lovely. I sat at THE table and ordered a coffee. The place is great and the motel was haunting. The juke box (CD player plays Calling You as you eat. And check out Jack Palance's Airstream when you get there.
It's certainly a road to nowhere but much better than where I'd been.

Ms. Jevetta Steele sang this beautiful haunting song. She is a member of a Minneapolis area family gospel-singing group -The Steeles. Her sister, Jearlyn Steele, is a regular on the Prairie Home Companion radio show. Both, Jevetta and Jearlyn, appeared on the November 22, 2008 PHC show. Listen to the archives. Jearlyn Steele appeared on the November 8, 2008 PHC and sang a great -Let It Be Medley. Just google Prairie Home Companion and look for the archives.
