So let me get this straight, y'all voted to be a private association and now that the dam has failed, you want FEMAs help? Being a libertarian is easy until the SHTF.
Holding water back from it's natural flow with a dam may not be the best idea and reminds me of my business where corporations attempt to dam information that is better off where it is today. Too much money is spent building a 'dam' or data warehouse and forcing the flow into the dam and then finally hoping it creates something useful. Generally the cost is significantly higher that other simper approaches that would help out the people who might use the data or the water in a dam.
I love reading how the dam failed, then people look at the footage and don't even realize that the dam is still there, what is missing is a "COUNTY ROAD" HELLOOOOOO!!!!! The people that run the dam can only drop it as far a the DNR will let them, Do you really think these people wanted their homes flooded and everything they own gone? Now they want to give the power of this dam to the DNR, how crazy is that? This lake has been here for years and I lived down at linden acres,
My inlaws live in Linden Acres. They were told that the DNR would not let them open the dam gates all the way becuse they didn't want to loose too many fish. By the time they decided to raise the gates there was too much pressure against them and they would not go up. Is there any truth to that???
@MrLunk2 yeah, and nobody that lived right under the dam had flood insurnse (how eva u spell dat)
my bestfriend's grandpa and grandma live down there, so after like 4-5 days it had happened, we went down there, and a crain was supposed to go down there to take off their livingroom/sunroom but the road was to dangerous. their basement is no longer there, and it looks like a giant monster took a bite off of the door.
many moons ago my parents owned a bar/restraunt right next to this dam. It was called the rocky nook inn. Sad to see this dam failed. Many fond memories in this area. Matter of fact, the very first time i kissed a girl was on top of this dam. My prayers go out to all the local residents and people that were affected by this.
I live in central Iowa now (Des Moines), but grew up 20 miles from this dam. Never did I ever image it would fail! River levels in most of Iowa are high because of above average rainfall, and that area receive about a foot of rain in a short amount of time. They were releasing water through the gates, but it was way too much water. The reason no one was killed was because of timely evacuations.
I have never ever seen an entire dam just disappear. Did they really hold back water for a concert? I don't know . I am just asking. Prayers to all affected.
@Duoforce No problem I can get the same way when it concerns our administratin with all the things going on today like the oil spill, the immigration problem, and Afganistan this is just one more issue to add to the list of troubles that the current administration can do without.
I live 20 miles from delhi and the flooding is just as bad but the farns around the town absorbed most of the first surge of water, and as for a government responce we really dont need it this is rural iowa we take care of our own around her
@manningr47 "as for a government responce we really dont need it this is rural iowa we take care of our own around her " LMAO!!! You j'mokes will run to Fat Chet whining for federal disaster relief money then turn round and vote for "Two-Books" Terry in November to keep living on the Big Rock Candy Mountain.

The DNR? What a bunch of idiots. They are so dumb, they call a storm drain on the side of your house a navigable stream. LOL

@nmbr3fan No idea on that...
But I asked myself a few times...
WHY dont dams like this have an emergency overflow ?
A place in the dam where in case of hi waters the water can safely flow over...

The local government had an emergency plan in place and followed it. How many other places can claim that?
