@viperkeeper but its a bit wierd that there only one known lizard in the world that we know is venomus, i bet there are other venomus lizards we yet havent discovered.
@cuzaseso there is also the Mexican beaded lizard, which is a close relative of the Gila monster, and as VK said, all monitor lizards are also known to be venomous
@cuzaseso an easy way of learning the difference between poisonous and venomous is this,,poison is ingested, which means eaten..venom is injected, which means it has to be put into the blood stream to cause harm.
I caught a Gila monster at 5:00 oclock near Dynamite road headed down towards the Verde river. I kept this 21" animal for a year. It became perfectly tame, and docile. I never saw one at night. But other friends of mine saw them in mornings and afternoons. They are crepuscular and nobody knows more than Arizona Fish & Game. This was in the early 80s & things were not near as built up as now. :)
@BoyCary Fish & game has no clue. You just admitted to collecting a protected species, a violation of the law. While I was collecting with U of A project under permit, we always caught them well after dark.
Gila monters are crepuscular and do not come out at night. They are active in early morning and late afternoon. Never at night. :) Read the Arizona fish and game iformation.
Usually to keep the species alive people work out what they need for a healthy life, and breed them as pets in coptivity. It's the same with the Hedgehog and Red Squirrel nowerdays.
as far as i know, no. i have spoken with two very reputable keepers and breeders of heloderma and their answer is no. i do not keep mine under any special light. remember, the vast majority of their life is spent underground. how often do they even see the sun in the wild?
wow. you really have had everything at one time or another. whenever i ask you "have you ever had....." you always point me to a video of it. You really do have an amazing collection.
Ken ( A guy my dad works with) has a son who is going into the navy. And he has what Ken think is a Gila Monster and Ken was wondering if I would watch it for a few years while he is in the navy. How hard are these guy to take care of? What is there backing temps ect?
so beautiful I've allway's wanted one... but they like to roam, so it would be hard to get a tank big enough to be happy. looks like it could easily be hand friendly with the right attention
I saw on mith buster that with glass in front of you that covers your whole body you can cheat a heat detection alarm does that mean they the heat sensing snakes cant sence heat through the glass and can only use vision?
kingsnake dot com is a great site. Very informative. There are a lot of experienced keepers and breeders and they can answer about any question you may have.
Hi, I am a major reptile enthusiast/hunter and such. I live in Ohio and wish I could get my hands on one. I have an Am Gator, 2 Ball pythons and 2 Redtail Boas and a Western Hognose. Let me know if I can get one somehow. Thanks,DC
I had some D. jamisoni that I obtained for a Zoo. I have some video but it's not very good. With those guys you have to concentrate on them and not how it looks in the camera or you be dead!

they are not considered "pets." these are virtually always captive specimens, whose existence has no effect on wild populations.
