He just turned them down because they didnt offer him enough money and that was because he was really poor at personal finances, as he said "you wait all the time for the perfect script, and then years pass youre broke and you need to film shit like harley davidson and marlboro man".

I think he wanted to be an actor, to create something. I do agree, though, that Harley and Marlboro was a bad move. I think he spent the majority of his young life poor and I would think that poverty sucks, hence, his choices.

And I can't think of any other actor who could have done it better. It is his rebellious spirit that allowed him to identify so much with this unforgettable character. People laugh, say all kinds of bullshit about him, he, however, can walk the line. He doesn't need to please anyone.  He believes in honor amongst men, repsect, loyalty. I feel so terrible for him because I'm quite sure he's seen all of these things go out the window. I met him once, a great, great guy.
