It is called hugging, you run off the stage and instantly hit the opposite direction, some characters (anyone with a quick dash like Metaknight/Falco or heavier characters like Snake basically) are much easier to do it.

when you "fail down cancel" at high percentages you also start to fast fall which allows you to hit the ground quicker and ideally tech/roll which kills your momentum, preventing you from leaving the stage. It is important that if you do this you do not di because you will go up and off the stage where edgeguards come into play.

But in melee, they incorporate skills, mindgames, and other nooks and crannies where brawl just automatically do. Which is actually pretty annoying, so melee is like the TOP TIER of the Smash Franchise. I Heard they are making a new Smash game for WiiU and 3DS ... Rumor, so I'm not sure.

I play all 3 as well with the time distribution going something like this: Melee: 90% N64: 8% Brawl: 2% I don't play the 64 one as often as I'd like to cuz I would have to bring my Wii to my friends house every time I went over as I have the 64 one on Virtual Console.

There's nothing wrong with Brawl. It just seems annoying that they took all advanced techniques out. It's good for people who struggle with these techniques or like the new mechanics. Melee beats Brawl hands down, but Brawl is still a great game.

@TheTom1337 The normal joystick, it controls where your char moves after being hit, you can be unpredictable at times using Directional Influence (DI) to attempt to avoid chain grabbing or simply being combo'd off.

@megaflux smashtom combos are improbable and inefficient. in actual situations they'd be impossible and unnecessary to do when many other choices are available to an average melee player who's aware of these techniques. smashtom combos are really mainly for flash and show. if one were to pull them off in actual game situations the victim of a smashtom combo should quit the game entirely.

Pivoting is unnecessary to be competent, and even most of the time at high level play its still relatively useless except for very specific situations. Of all the stuff in the entire video, shffling, wavedashing, and DI are probably the hardest to learn and also the most important. Everything else is pretty easy.

@TravisSaysGG For DDing to work you have to turn around within the first running step animation. Her first run animation is shorter than the others, Nothing to do with speed, just the animation.

I can think of a use for dash dancing I've seen in a video. Ganon was using his down-b on the ground to hit this person dash dancing but he dashed away from ganon and punished him when the down-b ended.

i think some of the items are classic but only ever have them on very low. Poke balls are a must i think, and then a few bits and pieces to add some variety. There is definitely some skill to using items as well, and they can all be dodged/reflected etc....I just wish there was a way to turn off crates and capsules as the random exploding ones can ruin game play sometimes.

An unlockable extra to edit which pokemon will come out of the pokeballs would be sick too

@thegreatNEb I agree, most items do require some skill to use effectively. Pokéballs, however, while fun, add too much of a chance factor for my tastes, since the pokémon that comes out is more or less random. On the other hand, the ability to determine which pokémon comes out could be too easily exploited. Another thing I've noticed, is that when items are on people tend to hang back until they have a good item before attacking. That's why I almost never play with items.

simply when u get meteor smashed with the right timing you can upB and cancel ur flight downwards. also u can use ur double jump to cancel it. Some characters have spikes and they can not be canceled. ex: falcos dair and marths dair

Thank you so much! This is quite a helpful guide. I already knew about some of these (eg: Wavedashing, Dash Dancing, L-Canceling) and I needed to see how some of the others were done. Now I can be even better at Melee. I use Roy, so I want to be as good as I can with him, despite the fact that he is deemed to be a "Low Tier" character. This video just proves that even though it is eight years old, Melee still kicks Brawl's ass in competitive play. Gay tripping is GAY!!!
