To the people who think this is cruel to the dogs.My dog surfs and he loves it. He started doing it himself. He kept trying to jump on my board. He loves to swim so I took him out on my board one day and he loved it. One day I fell off and he stayed on all the way to the beach. He's been surfing since on his own and goes nuts when I pull out the boards and get ready to go. You people need to realize that dogs have a brain. I don't force him to surf. He enjoys it and so do many other dogs.

@4Khyla I think it is cruel to the dogs that are clearly scared. Some of those dogs look terrified and half of them have their tails tucked between their legs. If a dog is genuinely happy surfing, then I think that's pretty cool, but making a dog do it so you can win some shitty contest is just wrong.

I've seen dogs who go nuts to hop on a sled to go down a hill, it's really based on the what the dog likes. Dogs can learn to love this stuff and then they go crazy for it when the know it's time to surf. It looks sad when they fall off, and their balance position is the same as their scared position... so it appears a lot worse than it is. They would jump off if they hated it.

It's very heavily monitored. The Helen Woodward Animal Center would NEVER allow dogs to be forced against their will. As for the look on the dogs faces, that's "focus" and "Concentration." ALL dogs are required to be trained for his event and if no dog is forced to do this against its will.

Teaching your dog to surf is another great opportunity to bond with your pet, your pal. Dogs love to please their people, and these Surf Dog contests are enjoyed by both people AND their dogs. The enthusiasm is contagious. I've seen previously shy dogs bloom in these events and end up surfing better than some grommets. They may start out hesitant, but then, after just a little experience, end up racing to get on the board before it even touches the water!
