Fantastic video! I'm going from crewing monohull (GP/Lightning) to a Hobie tomorrow and didn't want to be totally lost with my skipper, great all round intro. Thanks!
The starboard rudder is up to reduce the wetted surfice and allows one to go a little faster depending on the conditions. Basically when flying the windward hull the rudder does very little on that side so there is not need to drag it through the water. Just got to make sure to put the rudder down again when turning (tacking or jibing).
Just wondering, why is the starboard rudder up at 10:05 ? I haven't gotten a cat yet or learned to sail, but I'm trying to pick up as much info as possible before I do. Great video! Very informative!
great tutorial vids !! however the trapeze posture was total wrong .... thats going to hurt afterwards !! stiil tihink its a great vid thought and im going to show that to some of my students !! x
(I have tu replase three different letters with uthers tu make my pusts wurk)
The first thing I always teach all my students is huw to right their dinghy. Tip the dinghy un its side in an area that is safe to du su near the land and practice righting it befure sailing anywhere. By knuwing huw yuur dinghy reacts in a capsize its reduses a lut uf fear uf the unknuwn. Buy a mast float frum us, prevents the dinghy frum turning upside down (turtle).
This vid is so helpful! I capsized my 14ft catarmaran last saturday because im a noob! LOL! scary stuff when its your first capsize! the funny thing was it had fully capsized! but now that ive got some helpful tips i can work on my technic! Thanks tiller time!

@spitfireMK22 when i had my first capsizes it was sooo unexpected, we were just hiking more and more until it flipped, after my first time capsizing became fun for me. hah
Its better to realese the main sail, because in this boat its harder to recover from a straight headwind situation, "a ferros" (I dont know the english term used for that)
i would steer into the wind. it's a technique commonly used on monohauls to go in and out of the wind, but with the boom jibing, you basically steer in to the wind and then back down the wind on the same side, don't let the boom jibe or else you're basically tacking
I sailed a Hobie for years and they are great boats. My only complaint is they don't like to come about in light winds. Also I think sailing on the trapeze is over rated. The best sailing is a relaxed cruise in my opinion.
I roll tack my H16 in light winds and make sure to let out about a foot of line out of the mainsheet so the boat does not weather vane (mainsail like to over power the jib, which causes the boat to weather vane). With these techniques I have very little problem coming about. I love to trapeze and cruise it all depends on what I am in the mood for. Thanks for your comment.
@DrummerInTheCity1091 Yes you can, move the crew and skipper to the stern of the boat during the tack, the bows come out of the water, and the boat will spin right around, even in light winds.
@MrHobiecat That's not the purpose of a roll tack. During a roll tack, even though you are putting more hull in the water creating drag, the resulting "pump" from rolling the boat creates enough force to overlook that small hull resistance and speed up the boat. In the tack that you just suggested you've now sunk half the hulls, creating even /more/ drag, and without even a roll and resulting pump. Perhaps in a relaxed environment that would be suitable but not during a race it's not a roll tack
@DrummerInTheCity1091 you are talking about a roll tack in a monoslug. On a cat, the wide stance of the twin hulls is hard to spin around, because you have to force the hulls sideways, like skid steering a tank. By moving the skipper and crew back on the stern, the front half of the bows come out of the water, reducing the length of the hulls by half, making it easier for the wind to blow the bow across.
@MrHobiecat For it to be classified as a "roll tack" you have to be rolling the boat and pumping the sails. I have no doubt that sinking the boat does not help it tack I am just saying that what you are describing is not a roll tack, just a modified one.
@Romperjet The reason the hobie 16 doesn't tack well is because the lateral resistance of the boat is placed all along the hulls, not just in one or two places (centre/daggerboard and rudder(s)). When you go through irons you've no power, and the resistance from the long hulls turning in the water can be enough to stop you in irons. My suggestion is to bear off, gain speed and then tack very quickly, and sheet in the main sail as you go through the tack.
The H16 is best suited for teens 16 years old as it is a powerful boat. However my 11 year old boy sails it with friends, you just need to learn how to handle the boat and know you limits. Make sure before you sail the boat to practice righting the boat from a capsized position. Practice next to shore and in a safe area before doing it out in the middle of a lake or bay. We will be adding a capsize video soon.
Yes our video really shows how easy it is to sail the H16 but understand the stronger the wind the more skill one needs. I will have a video up shortly that will show my friend who has a spinal cord injury and no legs sailing a H16. He is new to sailing but is awesome at it now and just like you took learning to sail a safe step at a time.
We will have a new learn-to-sail book out shortly that will have all you need to know in it, so stay tuned!
hey im being givin a hobie 16 compleate with sails and a second one for spare parts with out sails, i was just wondering if its worth having them and are they as easy to sail as this video implies??
That is great if you are getting 2 boats as its nice to have one for spare parts even though the boat is very tough, so you should not have any issues with breakage depending on the age of the boat.
Yes we will be posting more videos such as our indoor lessons via RC model boats (video taped it today 3/2/09), new disAbled sailing video (filmed in July 2008 but still editing the video). We will be producing more videos like the one you have commented on.
This video was made in the 1990s by Anne Nelson, a well known Hobie and monohull sailor who competed in the Americas cup trials with America Cubed all womens team. I posted it as I think its one of the best learn-to-sail videos around. We will be posting more learn-to-sail videos shortly, along with videos of accessible/disAbled sailing and RC model sailing.

Cant wait to have a go now especially on the trapeze. Thanks ladies.

what should i do if the boat will going to capsized? do i steer the boat toward the wind or realease the main sail a little? what is the best?
TheHobieBoy 2 years ago
depends usally u would let out the main to drop down a little but it is sometimes hard to steer into the wind when ur in the air
