@iamfb Or maybe you mean changing frm the outside streets? Encourage all S'poreans to be like Chee, go on the streets & protests...behave like hooligans shouting at PAP politicians to demand an explanation on government policies, get foreign governments or influential ppl into Singapore to criticise Singapore government policies, throw out a huge grey cloud of problems related to ERP, inflation rates, property prices hike, foreigner policies or whatever then assume that SDP can do a better job.
1 day ago Well, being an intellectual, Pres Obama knows more than you think that he knows. He must've an analysis of CSJ's character and past record through his own CIA men. Obama is aware of why Singaporeans reject CSJ. Whose words do you think he would trust?... this CSJ man or the Singapore majority voters?
Simple. Singaporeans voted LKY and his govt for abt half a century.
PAP , I love you for all that you have done for singapore . The PAP have done singapore so proud that we have achieved with best airport, seaport, airliner (SIA) best police force , best equip army in ASIA, voted best judiciary, best education like 1st in olympiad competition, many country copying math teaching method, best medical in the world, so what the fuck do the oppostion still want to achieve ? But what 's his point? So fruitless if its not for the better of the system he can do it the right way get a seat in parliament. sad and pathetic to see him speak for the minority but he doing it the wrong way.
You have no idea about Dr. Chee or the true nature of the political system! Read his story and then decide why he is acting this way. Also consider the fact that the PAP has tried to make it extremely hard for the opposition. Elections in Singapore are secret but not really fair.
@honchochief who wants to go back to the already developing colonial days (this means, the British had already laid the important foundations for Singapore's growth)? Singapore is now a highly developed country and it allow more competition in politics. This will not ruin Singapore but on the contrary be a positive aspect that will further stabilize the system. The PAP just clings to power because it does not want to lose it. By doing so, it risks the future of Singapore.
I see your point. Any party will want to cling on to their power they had fought to establish. The positive aspect part is a big gamble for the future comparing what the PAP have done for the country so far. I would see someone like Mr Chiam as a good oppsition leader than Chee just look at potong pasir
OMG! I can't believe such a thing would ever happen in sg,....shame on u LKY n PAP,our governments is all dat, don't wanna come out clean,no better than child who fights with his siblings. very cunning indeed
chee's sister btw looks like an old auntie now...and what has she accomplished to date?haha nothing but wasting her life away, earning some wrinkles along the way
Chee's life will be over before he even noes it...is he really fighting for Singaporeans? Or is he fighting for himself and his ego...look at Low Thia Kiang and Chiam See Thong, they are the ones i truly respect. They aim to help Singaporeans, by playing the game according to LKY's rules, only this way, they can help Singapore on the long run. Not like Chee, only noe how to play gimmicks like protests and do "little" things which can't benefit Singaporeans at all.
@armyboy24 Remember this. When you set out to change a system, you have to do it from outside. Because when you get into the system, you don't change it, the system changes you. Eg. Chiam See Tong. What has he ever done since getting into parliament. Your ideals are messed up.
@iamfb Why don't u find out what Chiam has done 4 his constituency & in parliament b4 you ask such a casual question? What would ur evaluation of Chiam's competency based on? When u say change system frm the outside, what do you mean? Like Japan and Korea? It's government policies mostly under influence frm USA & have 2 be the puppy licking the Master's toes? Or perhaps like Egypt in the past, get fundings & obey USA? Why did Chee get foreign powers in SG to talk SG politics? You think about it.
Let me say something.. every single riot in the world needs a catalyst to start.. this catalyst is none other then speeches.. something everyone has, but might not know how to use well..
I disagree, speeches are used to voice discontent, rather than the root of discontent. Riots occur when there is cause for people to be unhappy, if all was well no amount of speeches would be able to stir up dissent. Look beyond superficial reasons, please.
OMG, you really have to look even beyond. Can everything run smoothly with no discontent at all? Even the purest water cannot be 100% pure. There'll definitely be something inside other then H2O correct?
So you say speeches are used to voice discontent eh? Discontent about what? They are the root of discontent. Look at Hitler. You will tell me that Weimar Germany was a mess and therefore powerless to stop Hitler. But what about during Hitler's years in power? Why were speeches disallowed? Guess
"Can everything run smoothly with no discontent at all?"
I have to admit that this sentence makes no sense to me.
The Weimar Republic was a mess and therefore provided the conditions for Hitler's ascent. If the people were contented they would not have listened to him, no?
Speeches are an incredibly powerful way to disseminate discontent caused by unhappy conditions, that's why they were disallowed. Better to keep discontent supressed.
Sorry about that sentence. What I meant was, Can everything the government does please every single person? I was typing too fast without thinking earlier.
Speeches are the powerful tools of recruitment for ones own causes. To exaggerate things a little, every single terrorist in the world became radicalised due to speeches or books. And that's because they have a strong idealistic ego to do what they think will make the world a better place without knowing that they are being disillusioned.
That I agree with you, it is impossible to satisfy everyone and doing people pleasing policies with short term results are definitely not desirable. But I think certain recent policies haven't been successful but no less painful, which is the cause for all this unhappiness.
You're right about the possibility of speeches being used to manipulate people and promote radicalism. But on the bright side I'd like to think it keeps the gov. in check, and freedom of speech is an undeniable right.
Keep the government in check? Well, that depends doesn't it? Long time ago, when the BN was still active, they took advantage of the freedom of speech then to promote their own interest and gain support. They actually gave speeches to dissuade the people from supporting NS, industrialisation, HDB, and various other polices which were for the good of the nation and these speeches actually led to protests and riots. Naturally, any govt' would decide to take away that freedom to prevent unrest.
"Naturally, any govt' would decide to take away that freedom to prevent unrest."
Wow, okay, that's going too far. No organization has the perogative to decide and judge what is good for others. That is an individual's right, to decide what he wants, no one has the right to decide what another must do.
BN, or any opposition, has the right to voice out what they think. If the policies are good, the results and facts will be speak for themselves. There is no need for suppression of speech.
Yes, but what IF the government bows down to pressure and decides not to implement the policies for the good of the country? These events can always happen when we don't have a hard headed leader.
Furthermore, your first paragraph is too.. simplistic. Of course the individual does not have the right to decide what he wants to do. He is accountable to others around him. Should he just act without thinking, won't society be chaotic now? Without laws, will there even be civilization? Think about it
Furthermore, your understanding of the situations is too.. simplistic. Having a right to choose what to do does not mean having to be self centered, or making bad decisions. You should give more credit to the human, he is not as stupid and incapable as you think.
Having a personal right does not mean the absence of laws. It means the removal of overly invasive and unecessary laws.
this is not 1984, people. troublemakers like Chee need to be taught their place. i do not support LKY or for that matter, the PAP, but i HIGHLY doubt that Dr Chee can DO ANY BETTER
It is very sad that in 21st century people are still being treated this way. Unfortunately they are very alone in this fight for justice and equality. We're really living in a cruel world.
According to Burma Ministry of National Planing and Economic Development in Jan-2002 Singapore was top investing in Burma 2001-2002 $1.5 billion. Also began Oct-1988 role as major arm's supplier(Allied Ordinance-Singapore goverment own).
Singapore Technologies sold state-of-art Cyber War Center to Burma. Singapore's arm forces provided military training for Burma. Burma has not le-reasted statistic since Jan-2002.
This seems like sensitive classified information. If it is so, even our enemies will have access if this becomes transparent. Have Chee and his people explained why it is important without endangering our security?
mother fucker pea brains! singapore belongs to all singaporeans, u don't have any fucking rights to tell ppl to leave if they r not happy. not even fuck lee kuan yew have that right, although he's fucking abusing it
Dr Chee and the SDP has done what no one else in Singapore dares to do. Demonstrate in public. Under the stupid laws of S'pore, gathering of 4 is ok but not 5 or more. So what laws have been broken?
this is ridiculous, whats the point of being brave enough to demonstrate. And what is she trying to achieve? then they should voice out what they felt should have been done, not demonstrate for being unhappy with the government? Changed the law to allow more demonstration and deter foreign investors to invest in Singapore? No way
The struggle for freedom is always an uphill battle. Those who contrive to subvert inalienable rights always resort to strongarm tactics they'll get their just desserts too.
The PAP and its use of the police for its own gain and to instil fear will not last long.
All despotic regimes sooner or later fall from power.
Dr. Chee, Ms. Chee, Mr. Ghandi and Mr. Tan has my undying gratitude and prayers.
hey ignore the mother fucker bamboo. i suspect that he & several others got paid to write stuff here. when u write reasons & facts he will just pick bones out of it. have some diginity all u fucking pap dogs
At least they are standing up for something they believe in. In this case they were demanding the government to be more transparent with the public funds which S'pore has acclaimed to have invested heavily in Burma. Quite a fair demonstration but a clear violation of State police abuse of power.
where was the s'pore police officer's discretion not to unjustly exercise their powers but rather to protect the law of the land and social order? what law was broken here to begin with?

Dr Chee and the SDP has done what no one else in Singapore dares to do. Demonstrate in public. Under the stupid laws of S'pore, gathering of 4 is ok but not 5 or more. So what laws have been broken?
A real case of stupidity. Change the unjust law!

this is ridiculous, whats the point of being brave enough to demonstrate. And what is she trying to achieve? then they should voice out what they felt should have been done, not demonstrate for being unhappy with the government? Changed the law to allow more demonstration and deter foreign investors to invest in Singapore? No way

I appreciate the SDP efforts for a better Singapore.

Struggle on!

You have freedom to leave Singapore if you feel it's a despotic regime ... you do know that, right?

Well, they got what they wanted. They want to get arrested so that they can be considered 'martyrs'. Misguided, quixotic people.
Bamboozler68 4 years ago
Nobody wants to be arrested. If the PAP poodles wanted they could have ignored them and denied "martyrdom".
