  • fantastic.

  • is it me or did the person who did the sound for this particular performance not do a very good job? the guitar sounds flat and quiet, the bass sounds like its being played from an amp the size of a shoebox, and the vocals are about twice as loud as everything else... great performance though....

  • great tune.

though, didn't know that ronnie james dio was the lead singer.

  • At long last, the 1978 show!

  • my ex boss and also a former old skool punk saw tv smith a few months back and said it was the best live act she had ever seen - and she has seen them all ..

  • Fucking awesome!!!!! One of my fave bands

  • The Adverts were great...talking about the frailty of words is rarely meaningful"

  • Gaye Advert mmmmm

  • @Proxylfc I have made yr day google vintage erotica forums & look up gaye advert...I had no idea!!!! And she looks fantastic

  • @kingofpunk1977 oh my god .i was gobsmacked. didnt realise she had done stuff like that. superb stuff. thanks a lot mate

  • faye and gaye and debbie ... sigh!

  • Most of the original 1st wave punk bands could play really well. The Adverts however.

I bet Bob Harris was pissing himself.

They did some good songs nonetheless and Gaye was gogrgeous

  • @thatfingio

No he wasn't, this was when it dawned on him he was an old hippy and would be out of a job. Never mind, Radio Norwich took him on.

Of course John Peel was also an old hippy, but he was about the first person to realise a "seismic shift" was happening to music, but unlike Bob Harris, he played it. Hence John Peel got stuck with the rather good label of "The Grandfather Of Punk" !

  • everything soundZ oh so-o-o fuckin' mid 70's!

  • tv smith is the revolution

  • going for the Michael Jackson one glove look?

  • @TrueStonerArmy he did this before michael jackson.

  • @mramos1126 you know i was just kidding right?

  • @TrueStonerArmy nope

  • *--* Eles são Fodaas de maiiis

  • radio smith sjungaa ku beast...

  • Bored tenenagers (then and now)...really no difference...

  • Gaye was hot...the lead singer belongs in'Joseph and His Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat' or some such thing !! : /

  • look at the hippies and metallers in the audience.classic.thats what punk was all about.and the old greay grey whistlers big punk fans that they werent maaaannnn.ha ha ha great band and tv smith and gaye still around!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!gerry dublin

  • Amazing!!! TV Smith is still one of the best :)

  • im not a teenager but i like this song :)

  • Haha, I like how he says "Bored Teenagers on T.V."

  • the singer is trying way too hard

  • They're so good!

  • just imagine them 2 idiot twins as punks in 77. instead of being made to look like little pricks to entertain people they would have been telling TV people to fuck off when asked to "perform" for the camera by dressing like tittle freaks..i reckon they would have made good punks. they have the hair any way, i just think the attitude bit would be a bit to much for someone who would de-base them self's so much to get TV coverage like they do. pistols on Grundy for me any day eh !

  • a lot of good bands come out of punk in 77. but i think of all of them the adverts sum it all up. everything that punk meant to me is in this group. you don't have to be able to play.sing, have any money, or really know what you are doing, just. .D.I.Y. that's what it was/is all about..a sort of anti x-factor. you need only yourself.fuck Simon Cowl and all that shit. just do it for your self.. learn 3 chords and form a group. kids today should embrace that ethos and ignore x-factor type crap !

  • so what your saying is all the kids today should be a bit like me.

good point bunsh of sleepy blind gits I should know I almost became one ugh.

ok not exactly like me that be weird

  • a brilliant clip. thanks for posting

  • Excellent band ever

  • Gaye did do nude modeling and I have the pictures. Go to Vintage Erotica forums.

  • @sharkattacksteve Hhmm, I'm off to look!!! hehe

  • funny how they barely have the camera on gaye...i guess she has to look like barbie or something...

  • Gaye was brilliant.

  • you know, I think the Adverts were one of the real stand-outs of the first wave of English punk. they were one of the best ones. There were alot of people who just jumped on the band wagon because it was the cool thing to do, but they were genuinely great. In the end , there were about five really killer groups out of about a hundred.

  • kelsmart - were you in The Adverts?

  • uh , no.lol

    why would you think that?

    I'm just a big fan

  • @kelsmart

Five ?! Have you only got one hand and that's all you can count up to ?

  • @kelsmart I have never heard of this group & I lived thru the PUNK era - I'm impressed - great analogy on your part!!!!!!!!!!

  • What a great band. How many of you know that Gaye Advert started out as a nude magazine model?

  • we really need to see photographic evidence to believe you mate :-)

  • I can't seem to post a link but...

Go to Google and type in:

    gaye advert nude vintage erotica

without quotes to find the free pix. There are 2 pages.

  • Anyhow even if she was nude model, who gives a shit. Gaye was the Queen of punk scene in those days.

  • @glengal I just looked, they're out there. I'd never seen them before. hehe

  • @DoctorDoBuggerAll

back in '77 I was like forget Siouxsie... It was Gaye Advert and Penelope Houston, those were my Punk sex symbols.

  • @sharkattacksteve I liked the look of Siouxsie when she was at her longer hair stage, about 1983, thought she looked her best then. Nice cheek bones. Didn't think much of her hairy arm pits though, on the Dear Prudence video. Also I didn't like the fact that she seems a bit stuck-up, and seems to think her and her Bromley mates invented punk. But that's another conversation. haha

  • this is just too fucking great

  • I'm 13 and I first heard the Adverts about 3 months ago in the No Thanks Compilation...

Now they are all I can ever listen to!

    Thanks for posting!

  • sick song

  • hair courtesy Robert Plant.

  • I'm amazed to see this. More 70s glam than 80s boredom/aggression! Thank you for posting this vid!

  • We're just bored teenagers.. looking for love... or should I say emotional rages?

  • Long live the directness!...

  • this is great wats the name of the singer?

  • TV Smith, I think.

  • Yeah I'm pretty sure it's him.

  • @dinaklarisse itsTV smith but his christian name is actually tim

  • its rubbish, but i LOVE it Lol!!!! LONG LIVE THE ADVERTS!

  • donutman

i am 43 and have loved the adverts since i was 12.

    do the math,

    btw you have good taste!

  • Who's that girl who's killin my buzz?

  • her names Gaye advert; and she's wonderful!

...and i think she's just amazing

  • Isn't She Just Full Of Life Though

  • I'm 20 now and have loved this song since I was 17!

  • Fantastic !

Because of my age I now sing - "Bored Middle-agers" as it is more relevant. However, I have no time for ageism which is all too prevalent in our community. 46

  • seen them support someone at Newcastle city hall in 77 and they were better than this. I remember thinking "these are good" good enough to stop me being in the bar, so they must have been fucking good, anyway all the bands that come up on the punk new wave scene are better than just about all of today's shit . I said just about all. . please don't e-mail telling me that this and that band are good (always seems to be Greenday & Blink) and they are shit as well. week copy's of good band's

  • Wow.... And dats dda 70's 4 ya

  • Comment removed

  • At long last! The 1978 show!

  • wow they really lacked energy in this video, and was there even an audience, it seems really docile, i love this song but if this is what i got seeing them live i'd be really dissapointed

  • amazingggg!<3

  • post-punk my bum, punk didnt 'die' in the late 70's, the only death was the desire of the media to keep reporting it, bands played in bigger venues to more fans and sold more records in 78,79 or 80, than in 77.

Most of these so called '2nd wavers' had been playing with the clash, damned etc in 76/77 and only got well known when the big bands split up, toured abroad etc.

  • I don't understand someone thinking the Adverts were 'post punk' (stupid meaningless phrase) but they were an early band who were gigging early on in 76/77 at the Roxy etc..

As for the bassist, she is still a looker now, i met her a couple of months ago and was quite surprised how good she looks. a 'gilf' (granny i'd like to..ha ha.)

  • "Post-Punk" describes that time between the end of the uk punk scene and the mid -80's. It took punk's attitude and mixed it up with synths, pop, reggae, disco, funk, glam - everything! Also, the 2nd Adverts record is NOT punk at all and their sound began to change completely...

  • Beautiful.

  • Nice bass playing.

  • Nice bass player !!

  • Def punk what else is. Think Mt Smith was past his teenage years

  • I'm not sure if I'd classify Adverts as punk in the classic sense they have more in common with post punk I think. They remind me a little of Gang of Four or vice-versa.

  • In the "classic sense" the whole movement was an eruption of nameless phenomena. The artists and bands that would later be lumped together as "punk" did not fit into an established cultural category or musical description.

  • Basicaly, that was the idea. :)

  • *The above being a short extract from Stormy (PHD, Esq.) McCloud's longer thesis, 'Signifiers of Identity as Noumena in the Meta-Phenomenon of the New Wave considered as imposed Taxonomical System of Meta-Culture Within the Wider Context of Language as Arbirtrary Metaphysical System'. Published by NME Books, 1985.

  • haha! whatever all that means lol

  • Just love this. Its what early punk was all about, enthusiasm over talent! Elastic band guitars and biscuit tin drumming... absolutely brill!! ...think I had one of my earliest w*nk's over Gaye too!!!

  • Incredible to think now that they were the first punk band on OGWT, and then they only appeared as a stop-gap. Bloody hippies !!

  • The Jam and XTC had punk roots and they appeared on Whistle Test several months before the Adverts.

  • XTC came out of punk?! My god, what have they done !!

  • So did the POLICE!

  • Hahaha you've seen that "Punk Top Ten" programme as well have you?!

  • Oh yes!

  • I thought as much. I love the bit right at the start when the girl shouts out "Oh some decent f*cking music at last !!" That just sums punk up.

  • It certainly does, happy days! Always thought the Adverts best song was "Gary Gilmour's eyes"

  • Certainly their least "PC"...!

  • I met her once. I was working for a Punk Rag . She was as lovely in real life

  • thats cool you met gaye

  • the bass player is gorgeous ? is she single ??

  • 1978

  • Married to TV Smith the singer.

  • Best song to sing along to!

  • i love the adverts, esp that one with the gorilla drumming lol

  • dobrze jest, chociaż kapelka nadal nie jest doceniana.

  • Gaye Advert was the hottest. This is also one of the best punk songs of the original movement. It just summed everything up perfectly.

  • the bass gaye advert is playing was mine she bought it off me in 1977 its a rickenbacker she had it nicked a year later

  • i was wondering how a punk could afford a rickenbacker... :D

  • dirty knees and chapped lips, perhaps.

  • Behave yourself !!

  • its difficult in a world of perversions!!

  • maybe its how DissentDispute get its computer

and think everybody does the same.

  • she could afford it because they had a record contract and the guitar shop where i used to go provided the pa system for there uk tour, i traded the bass in for a fender and she came in the shop and said she wanted the bass she wasnt a very good player none of them were but that was what punk was all about it didnt matter how good you were. if anyone out there recieved a fender p bass in 1981 black with a maple neck its mine i had it nicked if you had one off the back of a lorry then e-mail me .

  • esa cancion es hermosa

  • this is great

  • surely one of the best punk-rock hits...

  • no disagreement there!

  • Amazing band!

  • Yesterday night there was a german television film with the adverts!

    --It was called Bored Teenagers--

  • it is called "brennende Langeweile"

  • Ich habe es damals mit 20 schon geliebt - und heute immer noch !!!!

  • This band took my punk gig virginity back in 77 still one of the best to have walked the planet!

  • Awesome '77 band and a great classic punk song.

  • This was the first song/performance by a punk band on the OGWT...this video misses out Gaye Advert saying "finally, the 1978 show"

  • bored teenagers - power rangers

  • best adverts song

  • I saw these guys loads of times in 77 at the Roxy and places. One of my favourites from year, along with early SatB.

  • i'd tap the bassist

  • nice one!!

  • thanks! awesome band.. too much props to the pistols.. and not bands like these

  • Theres better live versions of this.

  • That drummer is really cookin'.
