30mw is pretty safe since the eye reflex will shut your eyes before serious damage can occur but with 170 or more powerfull ones your screwed if it gets into your eye at close range even for a split second

I can show you how to light up a match with 30mw, I managed to do it with 1mw 405nm laser, and I can do it with 5mw 532nm. The secret is in the focus, change the focus pattern to a certain distance and at that distance you should have a very tiny dot that is going to burn even black plastic

A good laser you should get would be the 200mW red laser ($44) and laser safety goggles from O-Like. This would light matches, pop balloons and can make black marks on wood.

The more powerful lasers are A LOT more dangerous then the typical red laser you find at school. They emit a large amount of light into a very tiny space. This produces heat.

A 200mW can cause eye damage in a tiny amount of time. It can even cause eye damage from 100M+ away. Be safe. These are dangerous!

30mW will still blind you and your dog. only 5mw or less is really eye safe, and thats with a very short exposure. above 5mW is unsafe because ANY direct exposure to the eye at short distance can/will cause permanent damage. buy a known 5mW laser like one from laserglow (dot) com if you want to play with your pet with a green one.

I'm assuming the 170mw beam will be brighter and shine to a much longer distance than the 30mw? What would the battery life difference be between these two powers? I'm thinking about making a bluray laser from an xbox 360 hd dvd but im not sure what power to choose.. I'm thinking of using a driver rated around 80-100 mW. I'd like to use it with Defraction gratings for effects etc. Not really into buring. What would you recommend?

You idiot...just because the laser is small doesn't mean it can't output 170mW. This laser peaks at 178mW on a Coherent Feildmax Laser Meter and averages 171mW over a minute. How fast a laser lights a match does not determine output power, beam diameter is a huge factor.
