  • I know I'm going to get slated & hated for this, but I prefer Slow Moving Millie's version. Never heard it on a TV advert and I love The Smiths but Millie puts far more passion into it. It's haunting.

  • @030phatmatt it's nice song wish it was longer

  • Wonderful song.

  • it would be the first time. awesome

  • @mjradar it was meant to be short for effect

  • 2 short

  • Musica MARAVILHOSAMENTE INCRÍVEL!!!

  • John and Lewis are having a laugh !

God bless them , every one .

  • @pilus87 I'm 37, from Manchester and I know who the smiths are.

It was meant as a joke - sorry if I upset you.

  • Greatest bands to come out of england = The Jam and The Smiths. simple as.

  • @shackoj The Beatles????

  • I love this song so freaking much!!

  • thrilling not!

  • those people that say 'this is the best version i've ever heard' of course it is! it's the fucking original, no doubt you've probably only heard this one and the bloody john lewis one.

  • @TheRealPhantomMenace LOL i hate that damn advert, i love this song, but for the last few weeks i find myself singing this damn song over and over again. but that version with the girl sucks, the muse version sucks...the advert version isnt the worst, but tbh i think i prefer the album version, there is more depth to his voice.

  • How to ruin a perfectly good song from a perfectly good john lewis commercial...

  • @Brotherbaylon good job on making people hating john lewis even more, several months from now people are gonna think john lewis as the next biebers, the next glee, where they actually make decent, if not good music, but constantly ruined by 8year old dickheads like you ...

    again, congrats ...

  • cure show me

  • New version is shite

  • @jbri1 Personally, I don't view it as the best smiths' song ever, but it is bloody brilliant nonetheless - that haunting longing and alienation. This version is sublime as well. But the Headmaster Ritual or Reel Around the Fountain will always get my vote for best Smiths songs ever. That's just me though!

  • Wow. This may be the best version ive ever heard :)

  • I'm just gonna chuck this out there....this is ecstasy!

  • @ouroboros98 best song ever?

  • i have fall in love for 3 times and all of them leave me without a reason...if i fall in love once again...please, i begging for you. please, let me get what i want this time Lord...i just can wait for now.

  • Crying to this song in fetal position is how you know you are desperately, hopelessly lame. But, yes, great song.

  • Beautiful song! Amazing emotion.

  • Maudlin shite.

  • @John27346 Go away.

  • @UnderTheAffluence I'm just trying to challenge people's assumptions. People who like this song assume that it's not crap.

  • @John27346 And they assume correctly. It's a perfectly written song. It's far from crap.

  • @UnderTheAffluence No. It's rubbish. You're a fan, which makes you biased.

  • @John27346 Yes, but I wouldn't be a fan if it wasn't good. As a general rule (and considering I'm studying Popular Music at degree level) I don't like rubbish bands or songs. You clearly don't know what a good, well written song is.

  • @UnderTheAffluence I have a PhD in Popular Music. I'm currently working in mcdonalds.

  • @John27346 Oooh! You're a witty one, aren't you? Two graduates from my course last year are called Katy B and James Blake. Both have played Glastonbury and been nominated for Mercury Awards. James Blake alone has over 10,000,000 views on two of his singles.

  • @UnderTheAffluence You mean THE Katy B and James Blake? I have all their albums.

  • @John27346 Sarcasm is the lowest form of wit. Even if you weren't being sarcastic, you aren't hip enough to like those artists. You are more likely to need a hip replacement.

  • @UnderTheAffluence I'm down with the young folk. I'm a big fan of the hippedy hop, bro.

  • @John27346 Wait a minute! You speak our language, so you must be legitimate. I'm so sorry for doubting you. Bro.

  • That is the same solo from the album. It is on mandolin and the solo is the top voice of the chords that he's playing.

  • @brotherbarra9

surprise johnny marr GUITAR solo. maybe i should have emphasized "guitar" solo. yeah it's the same solo from the studio version...i know. when did i ever say it was a "surprise guitar improvisation from the awesome johnny marr?" maybe i'm the only one who shat a brick when he started playing the mandolin part on GUITAR.

  • @kissmyshades Are you constantly on your period?

  • @xILambyIx

WHO ARE YOU TO BE TALKING ABOUT MY MENSTRUAL CYCLE?

    Perv.

    hahahahahahahahaha. okay. i'm done.

  • @kissmyshades hahaha

  • @kissmyshades Man, You almost had my respect. But this comment destroyed it.

  • That solo did was recorded in the studio version.

  • Lord knows it would be the first time.

I love this more than words could explain.

  • Never heard this song played like this. I assume by this date Mr Cannon has joined the group as you here him play in the background.

  • Do they realize they all have the same haircut

  • The ultimate song for hope, happiness, and change...let me get what I want this time.

  • when was this?

  • I guess it doesn't get much more better than this...

  • Bad ass..love the song..love Johnny marrs solo

  • ..So for once in my life

Let me get what I want

Lord knows...... it would be the first time......

  • Who are the idiots who "dislike" this? Did they stumble on this while looking for Justin Beiber but instead of hitting the back button they had to click "dislike" first?

  • love love love this song a million times!!!

  • Please please please let me have a Smith's reunion

  • I could listen to that guitar solo all day

  • I wish I were as cool as Morrissey

  • What a beautiful song.

  • Smiths forever!!!

  • @gary1497.. Idk about the greatest band ever. Theyre good, true.. But theres no need to put down metal or anyone who likes it just because its not your cup of tea. Music is music, and a true music lover can appreciate AND respect musical expression of all kinds. Not tryin to come down on you either, just some food for thought =]

  • too short of a song

  • Moz...I am melting!

  • I reckon this great tune owes some debt to Happy Xmas war Is Over by the John Lennon and the Plastic Ono band, which might be why it ends like it does with that mandolin strumming part, whether intentionally or not. Great to hear the live version.

  • @IndieKid45 and also You've Got To hide Your Love Away by The Beatles, which in itself owes to Bob Dylan....great isn't it.

  • BRITISH mah Lords... BRITISH!!

  • Beautiful!

  • Amazing

  • Thank you so much kissmyshades for uploading this 80's LIVE version of please please... I am in heaven tonight!!!! Thank you so many times and more!!!

  • The smiths

  • holy shit. I wasn't even born

  • Erm, I think the solo is on the album version, or at least every version I've heard (Best of & Hatful of Hollow) except it's tremolo picked in the background

  • My spelling was bad, but I am not bull shitting ,I was there.

  • i was at this concert........ after 3 songs morrisey invited us on on stage and they stopped ths gigg.....

  • Lord knows it would be the first time...

  • Love this version; more spaced out (slower tempo?), drums sound vacant and bare, and the guitar outro is truly great. Pictures are cool too, thanks for uploading.

  • MOZZ come a lima peru please :)

  • PLACEBO?

  • I was at this concert. I managed to see them again later on. Both shows stick with me. I wasn't a Smiths fan prior to this show, as I did not know much of their music. This concert changed all that... Smiths became the gypsy background music of growing up in Southern California/ Baja Mexico... still listening to this poetry 25 years later.

  • @lunaycholla LOL... still have the concert stubs.. just checked.

  • one of the most beautiful songs I've have ever heard

  • @thebaco79

I've never been a Smiths fan, myself, but I recognize prayer in all it's forms. If this song doesn't pull an 'Amen" from your heart....

  • gosto mais da versão dos Muse ♥

  • @marianaadinis LOL?

  • Love this song, wonderful! ♥

  • good times for a change = its time for a change.

  • who is it that plays guitar besides from marr?

  • amazing~

  • beautiful

    blissful

    peaceful

    i cry tears of joy

    (not really tho)

  • wow you don't often get to hear Marr playing solos like that!!

  • My first the smiths' song that i've ever heard. I fell in love with 'em.

How can Mozza sings my own life? Superb.

  • This is my anthem.

  • story of my life

  • I love this song but I'll never see them

  • 3 dislikes. Why?

  • OH ReMARRkable song"!!

  • Holy crap-- I WAS AT THIS SHOW!!! The encore was cut short 'cos Morrissey invited fans onstage with them and so many came up you couldn't see the band members anymore! I believe it was their last US concert ever.

  • @TBalone Yeah, I was there, too. I saw the Meat is Murder tour and the Queen Is Dead tour. Both shows ended the same way... fans overwhelming the stage and eventually grabbing the mic out of Morrissey's hands... and ripping his clothes off ;-) Seen lots of live music since then and these guys rank very high on the list.

  • don't know why. everytime i listen to thing song, i feel somekind of sorrowness

but this live arrangement very soothing!

hey, can i get all of the photos that played on you video?? nice collection..

  • I'm in tears, right here.

  • for once in my life let me get what i WANT

  • Just saw the 'smiths indeed' play this in Aberdeen. First class performance. Great song.

  • i just uploaded a cover of this song, please listen

  • great version of this song

  • i would like to see the tablature of the final solo

if someone knows about it, please answer me :) :)

  • I'm quite glad I wasn't at this concert. If I'd actually seen something so fucking amazing as this right in front of my eyes I think would've been overwhelmed by its beauty and died.

  • @Ares9139 me too

  • @Ares9139 one of the best comments I've ever read

  • @Ares9139 Couldn't have said it any better myself, The Smiths; the greatest band of all time and Johnny Marr can say more with one note than all these pathetic metalheads can with a zillion.

  • @Gary1497 Amen.

  • seeing marrz so young reminds me of how hardcore that bad-ass mofo aged.Still love him though

  • I love this song

  • I'm 25 and have loved The Smiths for years.

  • let me get what i want(8)

  • Thanks for sharing this outstanding version.

    Simply Brilliance ...

    10**/Fav

  • I find myself singing this song in my head whenever I want something really badly..! And most of the time, I get it! thanks to the Smiths! :-D

  • this song is great!!!!!!!!!!! love it

  • Words cannot describe this...

  • haha, badass version. just so so good ...

  • good times for a change ....

  • Pure brilliance, poetry, and truth. Thank you for this work of art Moz (:

  • loved it..

  • I was lucky enough to have been at that concert... 2nd concert I had ever been to. Although, I believe it was at Irvine Meadows Ampatheater in So. Cal (now Verizon Wireless). The concert was stopped early because too many people were being pulled up on stage. Still, I consider having seen them play only 10 or so songs the high point in my concert- going experiences over the years!! Makes me want to find my old ticket stub and setlist... Thanks so much for posting!!!

  • its so nice i wanna here the same song twice......

  • does anybody know what new-ish hip-hop song samples this song? It is almost as haunting and beautiful a song as this!

  • the smiths are pretty much the only good thing to have come from the 80's.

  • @bonjourballerina Don't forget Joy Division.

  • @Mc10doh yeah but JD came out of the 70's

  • don't like the album version that much, but this slowdowned performance is a real

    heartbreaker.

  • Can you tell us where did you get the pic at 1:08 you know, where Moz is re-enacting the This Charming Man sleeve?

  • Holy crap. Johnny has turned into Brian May!

  • I saw him at the Moore Theater 1997 in Seattle. He actually reached out and grabbed my hand during this song. Such the moment......aaahhhh....

  • I wonder how many millions of tortured souls, this song has connected with,in the 26 years since its release?

Will continue to go down, as one of my favorite pieces.

Though the covers never compare to the original, I DO enjoy the instrumental by the Dream Academy, that was featured in Ferris Bueller's Day Off. The part where he is looking at the Serat painting?

    In summation,beautiful,beautiful song.

  • a space in time, just fantastic

  • I love the Smiths so much but really dont understand why people thought they were always depressing..For me personally they gave me hope of a nice time in my life and I felt like they really were in the same boat as me, although they obviously werent cos they had just hit the big time..

  • Amazing band forever!!!

  • P a u r a...

  • I LOVE THIS JAM

  • It just seems like, there are some people who come into this world and understand it already.

  • again, The Smiths made one of the greatest song to ever hear.

  • I'll miss you Sarah.

  • First time hearing this version. I like the guitar. It "wails" a little more, neh?

  • depressingly good :P

  • very nice

  • the smiths and the deftones, fight!!!

  • Great version. Probably an mini-anthem for a generation.

  • what pic is at 1.13? moz asa kid?

  • yes, morrissey at age 6 or 7. i'm thinking 7.

  • Which is better Mandolin or guitar ? Theres only one way to find out.... Fight !!!!

  • Thank God for Craig Gannon., that's all I can say!

  • I find the mandolin solo from the album much more interesting than this guitar version

  • I agree with you. The studio version with the mandolin at the end of the song sounds a lot better than with guitar.

  • Love this sonng :) good job!

please check out my vids, on MsEmmabeb :)

  • ha they fucking rule

  • I wish I was born in a time where I could've been my age right now but still able to see the smiths live.

  • I love this version

  • "Good times for a change" - what does it mean?

"It's a good time to change something"

    or

"I 'm having good times, which doesn't happen often."

I always thought the former, only today it came to my mind it probably means the latter.

  • @gordgang

yeah. i think if it was suppose to be the former, it would most likely have been written: "good time for a change."

  • @kissmyshades ok, english's not my mothertongue, but i think it refers to the fact that life has always been so shi.t.t.y. to him and something good should happen to him, just for a change. it's more like "i would like to have (a) good time(s) for a change, cause i'm always so blue". the plural thing sounds kinda weird, but i think he's just playing with the idiomatic expression.

  • @JunkerVoland Holy crap, the one person that didn't even grow up learning english understands this song better than most of these idiots here.

  • @kissmyshades mmm I always thought he sang he's having a good time, for a change! lol

  • @kissmyshades

What "Good times for a change," understanding the whole context of the song, would mean:

"I am having a lot of bad times (strings of bad luck), I want some good time for a change."

  • @kissmyshades The original featured some beautiful Marr mandolin at the end. Being live, he just stayed on guitar and filled the end part with a little improvisation for the mandolin part.

  • @NickCave13

I know what he did. The "surprise" is playing that part on guitar rather than using the mandolin. That's all i'm trying to say. I'm not alluding to some impromptu solo piece that Marr busts out with during some surprise encore, although it may have seemed like i was. Haha.

  • @kissmyshades The answer probably lies in the difficulty of smoothly transitioning from guitar to mandolin live, while maintaining the integrity of the song. If Craig Gannon was touring with them, I guess he could have played Marr's guitar part and Marr could have just stood there, until the mandolin bit. But who's going to take an instrument on tour, to be used 20 seconds everynight, for a song they may or may not perform each night?

  • Comment removed

  • @NickCave13 Actually it was John Porter, the producer of the track, that played the mandolin part on the record.

  • @gordgang

or: "(i wish i had) good times for a change"

  • @gordgang

    Good observation!

  • @gordgang He's actually complaining and wallowing on self-pity. Cheers.
