Well I don't think its racists to describe a person's ethnicity when speaking about them but I do find it offensive. I don't like it when someone describes me by my race as if that's the only thing about me. We are all individuals worth more then just one physical trait and to simplify someone down to just that is I'd say is pretty vain or just plain dumb. There are thousands of other words in the English language you can use to describe me or someone else use them!

If you know 2 'Carls' one is black and one is white, giving a descriptive piece of info about them (and physical descriptions are the easiest to understand clearly), that's not any more racist than avoiding that completely and pretending it doesnt exist. There's just something about saying "Black Carl" or "Rita the Mexican" that has this string attached to it which is connected to a whole bunch of racist stereotypes, especially if you say it in a certain way, like mindy does. Also, some people are sensitive about physical descriptions and can feel that people only see their race first, not them as a person, so saying just their name can be politer.

@roxyb03 As regard "slurs", it is possible to use one and not be aware that it is racial. two eg's: 1) someone uses the term N***er rigged instead of Jerry rigged (no offence to Jerry!) because they never heard it any other way, never really thinking about the term's origin. First of all Black people are not a race. There are people born in different regions where certain skin colors dominate. Just as all africans are not black. I usually do that sort of stuff, of course when i don't know someone's name ¬_¬. I say "the black guy" or "the fat chick" just to not having to describe the entire person, like i also say, "the blonde", "the tall guy". It depends on the intention, i guess. First of all Black people are not a race. There are people born in different regions where certain skin colors dominate. Just as all africans are not black. Calling other people who use skin color as a discriptive reference does not make them racist. If she said I hate black people I still dont think that is racist. Predjudice more likely but racist no. There is only one race. The human race. I think that people in society are more ignorant than anything.

in this case: because people have other characteristics than their skin colour. furthermore, at least where i live, people aren't black or white. what's more, i fail to see the difference between calling somebody a "negro" or "black" - same meaning. but that's just my point of view.

Skin colour and race is something we use to describe others... that is my problem here. I'm not claiming that anyone does this intentionally and it's "only" semantics but worth thinking about.

If society is continually commenting on that black one, or that white one, or the mexican guy it continues to perpetuate the "us and them mentality" Morgan freeman is a great an talented actor, i dont see how saying Morgan freeman is that one great and talented black actor conveys any more useful information and i would argue continues to draw clearer and more defined lines between ethnic groups.

@bobbysnobby good point, i agree with you in that. i was more thinking of the other extreme when i wrote the comment: totally avoiding to say the race, being paranoid of others thinking you are racist if you do so. so "black" or whatever race becomes some sort of curse word, which i find is absolute nonsense, naming sb's race shouldn't be an insult. being scared of saying sth also gives it too much importance, if race doesn't matter one can also say it without fear.
