  • dedicated to the memory of mary clutterbuck..love you mum.xx

  • I went to a catholic school back in the 80's, according to the priests, this song was supposed to hide a satanic message if you listened to it backwards

  • @gonza68rama Yeah, me to. Funny thing is, Jeff Lynn is John, the apostle, twin and cousin of Jesus. He is and was Merlin, Shakespeare, Vlad, Bacon, Veracocha, St. Germain, Nemo, Dr. Who, and my master. He is the wandering christ, the gemeni with us to this day. Last one!

  • my 8 year old daughter loves this song ;D

  • Jeff Lynne is a fucking genius and he's not in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame? THOSE FUCKING ASSHOLES!!

  • @ChocolateHoneycomb Aint that NOT the truth.

  • What a life changing song

  • A.M.A.Z.I.N.G. without any doubt brilliant

  • this was actually 1979. I remember it well.

  • Sounds a little like The Beatles I Am The Walrus at the end-good song though.

  • Wow great xxx

  • Haha they missed out saturday. Why is that?

  • @awesomejay2000 Because the football match is played on a Saturday.

  • @awesomejay2000 Because Saturday is for football :)

  • @OrenjiDays No, it's the sabbath. He's John, the twin of Jesus, the wandering christ, still with us today, all your favorite historical figures. Mine, anyway. He is my master. I have known him my entire life, all 43 years. Check out Matt. 16-28, or the last paragraph or two of John.

  • I'm not exactly sure what constitutes a genius, but I'm sure Jeff Lynne comes pretty damn close.

  • Love this song, simply for its example as to what can happen, if you layer too much sound.

  • Pirate FM cornwall only plays mr blue sky ?????????????? Don't get it this is just awssssssssssssssssssummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

  • @tryseys that radio station is the best for 80's classic lol

  • Parts taken from "The Joker Went Wild?"

  • @9thfloorchaos Yes, good catch....and this is not the only song on that album in which a trace of "The Joker Went Wild" can be detected. The melody of the title line of "Last Train To London" sounds a little to me like that record too.

  • Why is a Metro 2033 video on the related videos!?

  • Reminds me of Elanor Rigby for some reason... But better.

  • love you horace 4 ever !4 ever !

  • Whoever hates this song SUCKS BALLS! <3 <3

  • @Jamyoos345 Mr Blue Sky somes it all up man .

  • @Jamyoos345 I dislike this song, but I do not suck balls. I like other ELO songs.

  • Saturday,is when a REAL man things of one thing and one thing only FOOTBALL.So hes telling the girl that he thinks about her every day, except Satrday, when his beloved Birmingham City, used to play, back in the 70s.

  • I used to think that this song was about me, as I have always been very shy, and didnt have a girlfriend until I was in my 40's !!!! but I am still too shy to have sex : (

  • @isleoforkney bad luck ,you have a lot of catching up to do !!!!all the best !!!

  • Great tune

  • @paulgalbally thanks for that inspiring comment Paul, you dumb fuck.

  • brill

  • Why do they skip Saturday?

  • @thuyner Good question ? I knew the answer once but i forgot it . If you find out please post it . TANX

  • This is freaking GENIUS.

  • He did pretty well in my eyes - found a girl and married her within a week - I feel the Lord was a little hard on him :D

  • best beatles ripoff ever!

  • toooo much negativaty in the coment' below

  • Comment removed

  • this song reminds me of my dear friend lol

  • just the encouragement you need to go and talk to that girl you like.

  • Discovery is one of the best written, produced and performed albums ever made. Most of the bands today wouldn't know originality if it pissed on them. Man this reminds me so much of my childhood it hurts! :)

  • @sharpcircle Most of the bands today wouldn't know originality if it pissed on them...ain't that the truth

  • @proterrazerg

    Couldnt agree more !

  • HORACE HORACE HORACE HORACE HORACE HORACE HORACE

My god, I love that part

  • I LOVE THIS SONG!.......want to know something about ELO that they wont put in the magazines....go to "eleanor rigby nzoz1971" and read my 3 comments. regards.

  • kelly on fine form.

  • great song

  • F*ck, am I this old!!!???

  • the 70's Slipknot

  • ELO is the most sampled group ever!!!!!!

  • All hail Jeff Lynne of ELO the King of Pop Rock and Soul <3........

  • who cares - it's a great song!

  • I think the whole Discovery album is great, i think it their best album. A Piece Of Gold

  • @JettLaken Time must be the best elo ever / i have worn out 2 cassets as i muck out the stables . even the osses like it

  • @JettLaken Time must be the best elo ever / i have worn out 2 cassets as i muck out the stables . even the osses like it / Ps how come they dont mention saturday ???????????

  • the ending reminds the ending of "I AM THE WARLUS" of the beatles.

  • haha the chorus reminds me of a certain line off "Dear Prudence" :P

  • ABSOLUTLY FANTASTIC.......my dad loves this....

  • ok.... so Horace Wimp was to go and find himself a wife... which he did (hooray Horace!)... then having got himself a wife, was then to go and find himself a life...?!?!?!?!? that does not paint women in pretty light, does it?????

  • @kalon216

Well when you've got a wife, that doesn't mean you have a life just yet.. If anything the lyrics state that he had to get a good life, job and that, to care for his wife. This only paints this particular kind of woman in an admiring light. : )

  • When I was a kid I always imagined this was Jeff Lynne's autobiography, lol.

  • FAntastic

RUDYVG - agree totally with you :-)

  • Note- some of the first use of the vocoder.

  • She was small and she was veeeeeeeeeeeery pretty :D <3<3<3

  • i was 16...best time of my life...it never comes back...i adore ELO

  • always loved the band, im glad i was only 9 when this was released, if i was 16 i may have hand a haircut like that too :O)

  • I have never heard this until today. I have realized that ELO has never made a bad song. Thanks for making the world a better place guys, you totally rock.

  • Like this if Ray Macken brought you here.

  • A great track that radio ignored...confusion, shine a little love, don't bring me down were the only tracks that made it to the dial in my hovel of a town ...on the run is amazing!

  • For me this when ELO went over the top, Out Of The Blue was the last classic album, Disco Very was patchy and showed Jerff had run out of ideas.

  • @tet1963 yeah and then time showed he had not only got his ideas back but had excelled himself musically and lyrically in writing a fascinating story which was largely ignored by people with not enough brain cells to tie shoelaces!

  • beep bo bo bop beep ba boop da boop boop beep

  • Love Kelly's vocal in this song.

  • @RMNCOfficial It's not hate, I reckon, and you're entitled to your opinion. However, I don't agree that every track on this album is as strong. "Need Her Love" and "On The Run" aren't exactly classics. Still, it has less filler then, say, Time or Secret Messages. The albums best tracks are pure disco songs though, and not only due to the string arrangements. "Shine A Little Love", "Last Train To London" and "Don't Bring Me Down" all have that chugga-chugga disco rythm...

  • Don't be afraid. Just knock on the door.

  • I know most ELO fans would hate me for saying it, but Discovery is my favorite ELO album.

  • @RMNCOfficial Fair enough, mine's Eldorado. Discovery definitely has its good sides, though! Besides, it's probably the best disco album ever made. Too bad it pegged ELO as a disco band for many years. Still, it's not as bad as, say, Balance of Power.

  • @RMNCOfficial hey, its one of mine as well. We all have different tastes which is what makes us different. In fact all of their albums are my favourite, even balance of power. The only one i dont like as much as the others is zoom, but thats just my opinion.

  • At the end of the video, why do they skip "Saturday" when they're reciting the days of the week?

  • @kitykity It doesn't fit in the textual rythm. Saturday has three syllables, whereas the other six days have two. Jeff Lynne's always maintained that it was because "the match is played on a Saturday" ;-)

  • @kitykity i'll try to explain it in musical aspect.... in music, the measure are multiple of 4 (hence 4, 8, 16, 32....). This song is in 8 measure. However, there are 7 calendar days, the song will be off 1 measure. if you listen closely they music played that 8 measure 3 times which is 24 (8x3=24). since they skip SATURDAY, there are only 6 calendar date now... so if they sang it 4 times (6x4=24) it would end as the same fashion as the music does.

  • the very reason why BLACK EYED PEAS sang SATURDAY twice in I GOT A FEELING

  • 14 people are too afraid to knock on the door

  • LOL 2:50-2:55

  • First time I have seen this video. I have loved this song since Discovery came out in the 70s. Great song. Jeff Lynne is a musical genius.

  • First time I have seen this video. I have loved this song since Discovery came out in the 70s. Great song. Jeff Lynn is a musical genius.

  • 14 people are wimps.

  • This song makes me want to beat David Cameron to death with celery

  • ...and also 'saturday' is a bitch to sing in line with the melody, coz it has 3 distinct syllables, unlike 'wednesday' which is sung like 'wen'sday'. It was also hangover day as well so Horace couldn't be arsed getting out if bed.

  • Iloved this even tho it was out dated at the time in the early 90's helped me loads.

  • WHY NO SATURDAY

  • @sofiawia

The day Saturday is omitted – this is because, as explained by Jeff Lynne: "'The football match is played on a Saturday".

  • @wardiemusic Thanks for explaining that. I have always wondered why there wasn't a Satruday in the song.

  • The first record I ever bought.

  • 14 wimps don't like this song.

  • I can relate to this so much. I love ELO. They are without a doubt one of the greatest bands in history

  • Superb song!

  • Jeff get off of Horace's nutts! Damn.

  • There is not one song from elo that i don't like. They are that awesome.

  • ELO never did a song half-ass, huh?

  • this is not the best song ever .but it is truely one of the greatest ..

elo had many many brilliant songs , and 8 amazing albums , thay will be remember as musical giants with ground breaking songs and a unique sound ......except them for what thay were .....

people on here will argue over the colour of shit ...

  • @sykeen ... It's brown right?

  • AWESOME

  • Every time I hear that "Okay", I think of OJ da Juiceman. Damn you hip hop. Also, this song is amazing. This is how music should be

  • Horace bears an uncanny resemblance to Doug from Doug.

  • This song reminds me a lot of Eleanor Rigby...

  • They skip Saturday everytime

  • @paulmjohn Because that's when the football game is :P

  • You are hopefully writing a paper and have decided not to use a spellchecker

  • somehow remids me of wales in 1979!!

  • Okay, I will be a man.

  • This is a cute song! I like it when songs tell a story simply, as opposed to either not telling a story at all, or layering the story SO heavily in innuendo one has to think about it a LOT. (Silly me, I [gasp] like to ENJOY music, not treat it like it was a Russian novel and I'm in Grade 11 Honors English and am writing a paer on "appearance and actuality".)

  • cool tune,, good use of ems200 vocoder as well, fits with the symphonic soft rock style perfectly...this is good songwriting and production, ahead of its time imo..

  • THAT SONG MAKES ME HAPPY XD

  • What amazing production,pure classic....!!! :-))

  • First song of the new year.

  • I know, what is this? Why is it that no one seems to know who Jeff Lynne and ELO are? Elo and especiallly, Jeff Lynne, has been one of the most influential everything's in my American ass. urbampot and proglove85, mad love to ya....Gina

  • he looks like hyde from 70's show

  • 12 wimps disliked this

  • To me, the switch of 'life' and 'wife' in the last chorus highlights the contradicting expectations of society; that married people who have settled-down need to get a life, and if you have a life you should aim to settle down and get married. The voice above can't be beaten, so don't listen to it.

  • Ah, so that's what Rory McGrath did before he started making me laugh...

  • Dave lee travis look-a-like ithink

  • if i was a Beatle, this man would have seemed like a Ghod too me!!!....SIT DOWN MR LENNON,...and just listen to thisssss!!!....Jeff,you are amazing you Saxon Bastid!!!...LMFAo....amazing!!!...i hearby nominate Jeff Lynn as the Greatest songwriter in history...way to go buddy...!!!

  • I'm not a big fan of Discovery, but this song is absolutely amazing! ELO are vastly underrated by the general public... To their detriment!

  • this song is cool :)

  • I feel the strong urge to buy cocaine and rollerskates

  • Fantastic group & what a great song

  • Wow!!

  • where did u find this???? awesome my favourite song ever

  • cool song Indeed

  • Vocoder FTW

  • great song from back in the days that you could get good advice from a song. now, the best you can get is to "slap a bitch up" :|

  • @SvendegardCatkicker dont knock the prodigy :p

  • Great stuff

  • Rooooocccckkkkkssss!!!

  • Possibly the greatest song ever. Then again, you could say the same about a few of ELOs other songs...

  • The chorus in this song goes "Horace Wimp this is your life, go out and find yourself a wife" but am I right in thinking the last line goes "Horace Wimp this is your wife, go out and find yourself a life" ??

  • @bhamboy05

    Yes, you are correct.

  • This song is so damn amazing. Might be my favorite ELO song but it did nothing in the US. I think it might have been a hit in the UK.

  • Fantastic band very inspiring

  • I bought this on 7 inch, I,m still useless wit hwomen!

  • Good old Horace got the girl! What an inspirational masterpiece of a song! ELO blows away todays fake bands!

  • This song made me not be afraid of girls in high school.

  • @BojanglesUdon i think bojangles is pretty cool guy. eh likes girls and doesnt afraid of anything

  • @BojanglesUdon LOL! classic

  • @BojanglesUdon, that's so cool.

  • love them iam 46 and my kids love them well 2 of them

  • HOOOOOORACE

  • Does anybody notice Jeff swapping "wife" and "life" in the last chorus?

  • @SlimeTron5000 yep but thats the whole point of the song..

  • @adibranch I did not know there was a 'point', Jeff wrote nonsense to fit the rhythm.

  • @SlimeTron5000 this one is clearly a storytelling though. Bloke with no life and hope gets married out of desperation to the wrong woman. The switch in the last chorus is the wake up call to the fact he's done the completely the wrong thing.

    But, its just interpretation.

  • @adibranch Whatever, it is just our interpretations. We tend to judge music emotionally. So I like this composition because of its chord progressions in the choruses, and the vocoder!

  • Comment removed

  • @SlimeTron5000 haha but that doesnt have much to do with your original statement of why he changed wife to life.. which is purely because at that point in the song the bloke had got married .. tis all :)

  • @adibranch That is just your interpretation.

  • WOW i remember when i was wee lad my brother gave me his ELO Album.....wish i still had it :- (

  • MY FAVORITE SONG EVER! NICELY DONE ELO!!

  • dont be afraid just knock on the door well he just stood there mubblin and fubbilin then a voice said greatest song ever ever ever

  • Don't be afraid. Just knock on the door.
