  • just got turned on to you. thanks. More power, Godspeed, rah...

  • I would have given my left arm to see you then, Sean. Make a movie already!!

  • Thank you for making this great documentry about a film that has an exceptional place in science-fiction genre, and giving us this rare and unique insider look to the making of this film.

  • Do you still shoot with that camera? Kodak and Fuji still make tons of Super 8 and you can get it processed at Dwaynes pretty cheap!

  • Wow. David Lynch looks almost the same today as he did then. Maybe a little bit more grey, but his energy is still all there.

  • I think that Sean is very underrated, that's too bad because she is a great and very beautiful actress.

  • could anyone name the black car in the background at around 1:31 ?

  • @010hlong Chevrolet Caprice. Maybe an 81?

  • This is great! Seems so fun & happy :)

  • The ONLY book adaptation I respect. Thank you

  • Oh wow! Thank you so much for posting this! I absolutely *love* this movie, and really enjoy learning more about it. Loved every second, and wish there was more! :) Thank you for making my morning!

  • Thanks Sean!

  • One of my favourite films. fantastic to see this unique behind the scenes footage and commentary. Thank you so much.

  • still a GREAT film!

  • Great home movie.

The extended version of the Dune film is very good, but the two hour heavily edited version originally released to the theaters was incredibly disappointing to those who knew the story of Dune from the book series, and completely inscrutable to those unfamiliar with the Dune saga. What a shame they didn't release it in a 3 hour version. If so, these fine actors would've got the credit they deserved for many of the fine scenes they put together in the original Dune movie.

  • Wow! This an amazing share from your part, Ms Young.

A truly great piece of remembrance from a very different point of view, of a most inspiring art project and badly misunderstood motion picture masterpiece.

    Thank you again!

  • is that cafeteria at the hotel or at the sound stage studio ? Harkonenes sitting together. ha ha. Pretty f*cking awesome and rare sh*t !

  • DUNE was misunderstood and badly cut.I had the 3 hour version. It`s great.I like the idea how someone tried to tell a great tail. There are not enough movies like it.Sure it may have lost money but even Blade Runner did not do that great to start with .But now look at how it is viewed.Great art is not always understood at the time it is done.

  • I hope Sean that you will work with David Lynch again, it's my favourite director all time.

  • Thank you Sean, I love it!!

  • Thanks for sharing this with us Sean. The whole was really interesting.I can't believe just how big the model ships were that you stood in front of near the beggining, but I guess thats Hollywood for ya :)

  • and one more thing kyle maclachlan was super cute!!!!!!

  • i love it!!! awesome job sean!!!

  • What? You couldn't remove your Stillsuits? then they served their intended purpose! :D lovely video Sean! ,

    Carlos, Mexico City.

  • very interesting, is there more of this behind the scenes stuff from you?

Chani in Dune looks so cute, I quite fell in love with her too. :)

btw. there are several fan-cuts of DUNE on the web. one also on youtube, including the much better ending with the dialogue between Chani and Jessica (instead of the ridiculous rain scene).

This movie is always a pleasure to watch, beautiful pictures and music, super actors. should have been cut into 2 movies or 3 like Lord of the rings.

  • Awesome! And I love the movie, warts and all---the cast carries it through wonderfully!! Thanks for sharing this!!!

  • It was a great movie, they screwed it up in the final cut. That wasn't David's fault.

  • Strange choice of background music...

  • Fascinating. Such a treasure. Thanks for sharing this. : )

  • I loved the film Dune, and am just now reading Dune and loving that too. Oh, and love you Sean, too, ever since Blade Runner! :-)

  • sweet little home movie- thankyou for sharing- Dune is a totally stunning film. its a masterpiece in my eyes.. good job.

  • Great video, thanks for the insight.

  • Very cool Sean

  • Patrick Stewart....(long pause). By the way, i hate this fucking music.

  • Tks a lot Sean. I near was an extra when you filmed in M City, they sent me to other location for a local production. Sad. Thanks for sharing !!!!

  • Love this, Sean is a great actress and I've loved her since I first saw her in Blade Runner and Stripes. I'd love to see anything she would direct, she's sooo talented. Great job Sean hope to see much more from you in this capacity as well as acting:)

  • thanx for uploading this.. it is so wierd to see this.. dune is my favorite movie.. to see all the players sit together and eat..david lynch and all the actors captured the essence of the book so wonderful. I am very grateful they made dune.

  • Sean Young was in a ton of good films. and she helped make them good films. Fuk i love Dune. hollyweird is so quick to dismiss talented people

  • I would love to see you direct a feature film or documentary. You have a great perspective on things.

  • Sean, you made it for me as Lieutenant Einhorn in Ace Ventura:Pet Detective. So much sass!

  • Beautiful super 8 footage. Why the hell isn't it cheap and available?

  • Sadly we rarely see this kind of behind the scenes footage for features anymore. Now anyone with a video camera or IPhone will try this and it's the audio is mostly very good up close with tons of background noise that's incoherent and if it's too bright or dark, the video is nowhere as flexible as Super 8mm film.

Glad to see David Lynch smile a bit, considering it was such a major project to direct.

  • What a treat this is. SY voice...... hmmmm. lovely.

  • I love seeing candid behind the scenes footage and photos of films made a while ago (with sci-fi films in particular I get a kick out of seeing wearing the costumes in the real world) Thank you for sharing this with us Sean, you were beautiful in this film (still are of course)

  • I can't explain exactly how much this movie means to me. Every single detail is so perfect. Every scene captivates me. My younger brother had me watch it. We watch it a lot. The writing alone is great in many ways. I love when Kyle yells "Father, the sleeper has awakened!" It's so powerful. It makes me want to awaken and not be afraid anymore and face my fears. I'll allow the fear to pass thru me. All that will be left is me. This movie inspires me to be courageous.

  • Sean Young....will forever be associated with 2 of the greatest sci-fi movies ever made....not many can lay claim to such a feat.

I just wish David would be more open & positive about Dune...i know it hurt him deeply after all the criticism etc. But hey.. imo the critics were wrong...on most counts...even though Dune does have a few problems.

Lynch's Dune is a phenomenal work of art...at the very least!

  • I'm hoping for a remake.

  • @riodejaneir10 Sci Fi channel did a remake but i felt it did not serve justice to the original.

  • @pratsch42 Nothing adapted to the big screen or small screen ever does enough justice to a literary piece of work. Doesn't mean that directors like David Lynch or John Harrison will stop trying.

  • Looks like a special time. David Lynch made an ambitious move with Dune, especially as only one movie (as opposed to a trilogy). I wonder if he would have done better with "Rendezvous With Rama?"

  • Comment removed

  • On the Blade Runner commentary, Ridley Scott says he was originally slated to direct this movie instead. I've always wondered how that would have turned out, but if it would have cost me Blade, I'd much rather have things the way happened.

I'm still waiting for them to cut the film properly. The theatrical version rushes the story; it needs some of those cut scenes and to drop some others. But the Alan Smithee version is a joke unto itself.

Also, this home movie should've been on the DVD.

  • @jessemaurais

Scott has spent 20+ years tweeking Bladerunner....Imagine if David had done the same with Dune.

Both of these movies Dune & Bladerunner....were butchered by the studio knownothings! It's just that Scott realised the brilliance of his piece (he hated the first version with the commentary track)...whereas David didn't imo....and this is David's and our loss, seems he got too burnt and took it all to heart etc.

  • @roachy333 Yeah, studio execs have their heads up their own asses. And David really should return to the film and try for decent cut. Unfortunately it seems that he wants nothing to do with that movie ever again. Nor does it seem likely that the studio will let anyone else have a go at it.

  • Sean Young I would love to see you in a newer version of Dune. If they did a remake of Conan the barbarian they need to do a remake of Dune.

  • Thanks so much for sharing your insights and footage! It was very cool to see! Dune and Blade Runner are two of my favorite movies and you were fantastic in both of them!

  • what camera is this?

  • That is very interesting Ms. Young! You should release your own behind the scenes DVD collection!

  • This was really really cool. Dune has always been one of my favorite films, and its so awesome to take a peak behind the curtain. Also I've always had a crush on Sean and would love to see her in more films.

  • Dune is one of my all-time favorite movies. Loved the art direction and casting.

  • Absolutely LOVE Dune & Lynch, what a weirdo (I mean that in the best way possible!)

  • Dune is my favorite sci-fi story of all time. I'm so glad you did this and eventually uploaded it. It's amazing. Thank you.

  • This just totally made my weekend. I loooooooooooooooove Dune.

  • most beautiful woman alive

  • I love you so much Sean and I love you even more for posting this incredible footage I had no idea existed. What an amazing movie and what an amazing experience this must have been. You have everyone in this video. Don't think you missed anyone! Thanks for getting all the Visual Effects artists in it. You even got the great Giannetto de Rossi. Thank you again and take care.

  • Much appreciated, Sean!

  • This is amazing work, Sean. Truly. It feels so intimate and the music you chose, which I was unsure about at first, gives it a lovely texture to the Super 8 making the images move like in an old silent film. If there are to be any more releases of Dune in the future I would love to see this in the special features.

You are a beautiful woman and, in watching some of your other pieces, quite fearless. Very very cool.

  • Sooo cute in that stillsuit! ^.^

  • Thanks for sharing Sean, fellow Pariah. Incredible. I'm sure David Lynch was overwhelmed. I can't imagine working on the same scale of film set these days - no smiles. You caught more movie set smiles than I've seen in a long time. These days cast & director runs and hides - no way to catch a grin. Possibly filmmakers, cast, and crew are happier on location???

  • Oh how I love this, backstage home movie in 8 mm! Pretty young stars, big name behind the scenes talent, and the jarring juxtaposition of space suited heroes walking into a normal bland brick building on planet earth. Funky french fry lunches and people laying about in suits. LOVE! Thanks so much for sharing this, it's great. I gotta rewatch Dune now, again, for like the 166898798th time.

  • So unbelievably generous to share this with all of us Sean. You can tell you're the one filming because of the look in everyone's eyes. They were absolutely in love with you! Hope you're well these days.

  • Huge fan of Dune. Thank you for sharing this!

  • 3:44 Look at Patrick Stewart's long hair!

  • What a cool, personal look behind the scenes of one of my favorite movies! Thanks, Sean!

  • I know this film has been bashed by some fans of the novel. Im sure at times Ive done it myself. Having said that, I must say that anybody who has read the book understands what a difficult story it must have been to translate to film. I have the theatrical version, the extended version & the SciFi Channel version. Each of them has elements that are brilliant. Although, IMO Sean Young -IS- the perfect Chani. Thanks for sharing this cool behind the scenes footage. Sean, you kick ass. Up the Irons

  • Simply love it!!! Big fan of Seans' and also the whole Dune saga, from the first book to the last Jodorowsky Doco and all the what ifs!? Exactly why Dune is what it is. Big Ideas for Dreamers.

  • How did you transfer the 8mm film onto something youtube was willing to accept?

  • Who Is The Composer Of The Background Music?

  • Dune was such an amazing movie...WAY ahead of it's time...im pretty sure i'd be huge success today.

  • Thank you David and crew for making this outstandingly fantastic movie, regardless of what was said when this movie first came out, i found this to be the best sci fi i and many others have ever seen, even though the production didnt work out as planed i had ofen wished to see the other books made into movies as well, but oh well, im sure the folks of today would appreciate them more then they did back then, thank you for making DUNE David Lynch, a masterpiece at it finest.

  • This is fantastic !!!

  • Oh my god how much I love this movie!..such a strong impact every time I watch it...i'm 22 now, maybe I was 16 when I first saw it... biiig favourite!

  • why Mexico city of all places?

  • @sondano= Tax purposes. They also filmed Conan The Destroyer, and Total Recall there as well.

  • Francesca Annis also worked with Prince in Under The Cherry Moon, '86 - little Rock Factoid since Dune featured Sting...!

  • This film is amazing, even in its over-edited state. You and Kyle M. are so amazingly beautiful and young! Probably my greatest film fantasy is that all the footage that was cut from Dune could be restored to whatever David Lynch's original vision for it was. Thank you for the behind the scenes look!

  • Did you bang david lynch?

  • This is a rare gem. It's not often we get to see the candid, human side of filmmaking. The perspective is so intimate and fun; a true backstage home movie. Many thanks for taking the trouble to make it available.

  • very cool! thanks for making/saving/sharing this!

  • DAVID LYNCH!yu di so damn well with the movie...i've grown up with yur movie since i was 11 in 1984...at first i was confused by yur movie...but it kept me so intrigued...enough to rewatch it countless times and read the novels...i usually (always) hate liberties taken by directors, but yur were so symbiotic and perfect with the essence and feel of the book...i have NO regrets with your choices

I can only DREAM that you would make movies for the following novels.....NO CGI of course

  • this is really inspiring. any one of us can be a dictator

  • Thanks for uploading this. The film is still mesmerising to watch after 27 years. I understand a remake is being planned but it can't possibly match the David Lynch version. It will be just someone else's take on the Frank Herbert novel without Lynch's magic. And Jose Ferrer, great actor!

  • I just finished watching Dune and your narration shows how much great time you people had during making of the film! Best regards!

  • If you are really Sean Young, then you should know that I was in love with you when I was a kid, and that Blade Runner and Dune were drivers of my childhood spent in grey, Eastern Europe, behind the iron courtain. There are no words on this world to express how much I'm grateful to you, my beautiful, delicate Rachel. Thank you.

  • I saw Dune when I was 14 years old in 1989 on laserdisc for the first time. It blew my mind. I had to go out and get the book. The liberties that David Lynch took with the film, I felt, perfectly preserved the feel of the story, the feel of the book--and of course, cinema is such a limited medium. Dune was a great movie, and David Lynch's best. It's not his fault if people didn't get it. This movie rocked, and will always be one of my favorites.

  • Those still suits looked so bad ass! You guys all made a great film! Thank you for your hard work.

  • BEFORE THE HAIR!

  • I heard you guys had ran into the cast and crew of Conan The Destroyer. It's funny seeing the "Harkonnens" of character.

  • Are you really sean young? :)

you look wonderful, in BLADE RUNNER like a beautiful doll...

I had a heart pain when Rachel realizes her memories aren't hers. when she cried, dont cried alone! she looks so tender and lovely, people loved you; dont give up!

my heart full of fellings - Alfonso, from southamerica (excuse me my poor english)

  • Why wasn't this included on any of the DVD releases... or was it? Thank you msyPARIAH.

  • While many things were not like the book, the inner monologues of the characters is what makes the 1984 version the best. Francesca Annis is one of the most beautiful women of all time too ;)

  • This is awesome! Thanks for posting!

  • it is a classic it its own right ,cant be remade again, like 2001, i cant say much else.

  • one of my favourite movie ever!!

    beyond imagination

  • Hi Sean,

Thanks for the vid and a small insight into one of the most iconic sci-fi films of all time.

P.S. I've had a crush on you since Dune and Blade Runner. x

  • Good night Sean Young, I hope you were not molested as a child.

  • David Lynch is an extremely gifted mind control programmer. He has demonstrated excellent mastery in the art of enslaving the human mind...In particular a "weak" mind. Yes I love Dune, on the other hand I cannot stand a parasitic blood sucker either. push, pull, up, down, east, west, north and south. Which one is it? Who gives a fuck?

  • Thank you Sean for another window into the universe of Dune.I just LOVE that you shot it all in Super8.I really enjoyed everyones' reaction to you filming them.Great stuff, thanks again.By the way, I loved you in Dune.Peace.

  • Sean i loved you in Blade Runner!!!!

  • strange peephole into the acting world

although you say the film was not great

    it remains a classic

    timeless

lynch might not have been happy with it

but the quality of his people shine through

    incredible piece of work

might have been better if lynch had more say

    but who is to know...?

  • The original Dune movie was bound to fail despite the star power involved because, like the flopped Avatar: the last air bender, you have an enormously complex story that can't be cut down into 2 hours and have it make sense - it loses it's appeal. Lord of the Rings which was done in 3 movies and the Scyfi mini-series was much more comprehensive. You really must read the books to fathom the depth of the story line as critical points were cut out of the movie.

  • This is great! really atmospheric and illuminating,

    thanks for uploading

  • Wow!!!! Wonderful!

  • Wow that was very special to see! Everyone does look happy - I like how the narration sort of hints at doom! And even though the film Dune was not totally successful I still love it and think it is amazing.

  • Thanks for posting....very interesting footage! Remember watching Dune in school as a part of a class..loved it!

  • Thanks for posting.

  • Truly fascinating to see these behind the scenes clips with narration. I could watch three hours of this stuff on Dune and your insights on the people and the director. Thanks for sharing.

  • I just loved this movie. I loved the book. I cherish each. The sets and the music, the atmosphere of this movie was just beautiful, and very special.

  • I just loved this movie. I loved the book. I cherish each. The sets and the music, the atmosphere of this movie was just beautiful, and very special.

  • it's channi!

  • Thank you for this Sean.

  • Great footage and commentary. And Dune is a great movie!

  • Thanks very much for sharing this. Dune has always been on of my favorite movies.

  • I like Sean Young ....but in the novel Chanis charcter was a different typ (I hope that she isnt angry that i am saying this)

  • thanks for sharing.

  • I can understand if Mr. Lynch felt kind of swallowed up by this project. Still, the ship was and is far from sinking as far as Dune is concerned. And Lynch's vision for the film will always be remembered as especially original.

You do very well documenting by way of your camera.

  • i just watched the movie again today after watching this. it was such a great piece of art. i realize that you are in every movie i love. thank you so much for sharing this with us.

  • @IPHOBOSSI

Right!? Blade Runner, Dune, No Way Out. Wall Street, Stripes, The Boost.

    Love Sean Young.

  • Thank you very much for posting and preserving this piece of film history. And thank you for agreeing to collaborate with Westwood Studios to make the Blade Runner video game in 1997. Your work is much appreciated.

  • What an amazing group of people! Sting, Patrick Stewart, David Lynch et. al....and on other sets, Harrison Ford + Blade Runner. Oh for some gossip but you're way too classy for that... A charmed and deserved life you are living. We miss you ! ! ...and many thanks for this post.

  • Sean you have gotten more gorgeous with time!!!

  • the book deserved better.... but you were my first crush Sean, here and in blade runner. best of luck.

  • I always thought you were one of most charming actresess ever! :O)

  • This is terrific! Thanks a lot for posting these unique images!

  • 4:55 to 4:59 = HAWT

  • one of best movies for me movie with soul

  • I love this film so much. True, it couldn't cope with the story demands of the book but the heart and soul is there and makes for a truly epic experience. Musically and visually it beats most modern "epics" hands down!

Thank you Sean for sharing this video, and I certainly hope you are doing well for yourself so many years later! ^_^

  • Sean, if you are the legendary actress that might someday read this stuff. You did almighty work, and I am hoping you make another big picture some day. I always wondered what happened to you. All the best to you.

  • I can imagine working with David Lynch would be a very fascinating experience, a very bizarre experience, or both!

You and Kyle look so there, like you're both about 15!

  • wow Sean Young you are awesome! i was a young lad when i saw dune in '84/85 so awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!! you have the sexiest voice in holywood :)

  • No clips of you running around in a Catwoman costume? So disappointing.

  • @MrTooGay miaow

  • DUNE was a great movie, I also seen where David Lynch was offered the job to direct Return of the Jedi but he turn it down I always wonder how JEDI would of looked with that DUNE hard core David Lynch touch. Thank you for posting this I really wish you were Sean Young.

  • Sean , thank you so much for sharing your private archives and let us watch behind the scene of this piece of cinema history.

  • Yes, it's really me Sean and thanks everybody, I so appreciate the kind words! I should finish the narration someday!

  • @msyPARIAH I've always like your movies and have to say your role in this they couldn't have chosen better. Whenever I think of Chani, Your face is the one I remember. These other people portraying the characters have no talent. They are pretty faces but no more, no acting skill what-so-ever. I've always thought you were stunning in all your work, PAUL ATRIEDES was one lucky man!....FREMEN! haha. Thanks for listening.

  • @msyPARIAH Those still suits look so tight fitting. Were they one-use only, Sean? It looks like it was an ordeal waiting to have them made.

  • @msyPARIAH

Sean, thanks a million for this. All the best.

  • @msyPARIAH I think your great. I would like to meet you.

  • @msyPARIAH Hi Sean!

  • @msyPARIAH Were you creeped out by that troll linda hunt? Did you bang sting?

  • @msyPARIAH Just wanted to say that I admire you so much! And you was like.. the impossible love of my childhood : )

  • AT LAST... everyone can now be "backstage" in the making of Dune. Most important: With Sean's candid narration and vantage point. Thank you

  • Are you really Sean Young or someone who works for her? I love Dune, it's one of my favourite films. I'd like to see more of the lost footage. Thanks for uploading this. I like Sean Young too, I've seen most of her earlier films, she is so beautiful. I wish she could make a comeback.

  • wow this was really awesome. Thank you for uploading this. Really gives a great behind the scenes look into the making of the movie.

  • Well, it was a great movie anyway.

  • should've hired aldo ray. he (probably) could've used the break....probably wasn't a bad guy, but I just don't know.

  • I really would love to see and hear more of Young's take on the production. A lot of folx have determined over the years that Ms. Young is a bit of a kook, or embittered, etc. But I think some of her take on Lynch and this film carry some legit weight. I get sense that she saw Lynch as maybe a little inexperienced at a production this big, and covered for being in over his head by distancing himself from the final product. Also, anyone know who Aldo Ray was supposed to portray?!

  • thanxxx for sharing sean :)

  • 4:08 It's Aldo Ray. I promise you ALL the good footage is here. The rest was not focused or just a tiny piece left.

  • @msyPARIAH

May I ask what part Aldo was considered for?

  • 4:08 What's the name of the guy?

I can't understand Sean when she says his name.

  • Thank so much Sean for uploading this gem, rarely we get access to this kind of footage

  • Hey Sean you are an amazing timeless actress. Keep fighting don't let them stigmatize you!!!
