  • This Song R0CkSSS

  • Kind of a paint by numbers DT song, nothing too special. Its like they were listening to a random playlist of metal songs, and just chose bits they liked, changed them slightly and inserted them into the song. Not saying all bands don't do that, but this is obvious - hey there is a Pantera groove, that is an Iron Maiden breakdown, wow Metallica wrote that in 84, and then DT reusing their own stuff. Works well as a tribute song, but nothing past that.

  • this song actually has the best breakdown ever. and all that without the core-crap breakdowns are usually combined with. fuck, one of my absolute fav DT songs. topped only by overture 1928 and maybe honor thy father.

  • Portnoy admitted in an interview, this song is actually Metropolis Part 3

  • @AdrenalineThrob why the fuck would he say that? has none of the typical metropolis hooklines?

  • I love how the instrumentals of the previous 4 parts of the 12-Step Suite are perfectly combined in this song, while progression of the theme still shows through the lyrics. Awesome.

  • It's a shame that Portnoy left just after concluding this 12step-suite. I think we'll never see DT perform it live in its entirety, since it's mainly Portnoy's suite.

  • @intotheprog well at least we have the root of all evil. it's not the same but it's better than nothing :D

  • I am getting so much enjoyment from the people who think they're detectives by spotting the similarities between this song and the other parts of Portnoy's Twelve-Step Suite! xD

  • I love that they took some of the lyrics from Root Of All Evil and change them just slightly.

Both songs rate in my favorites from Dream Theater.

  • Absolutely stunning and brilliant last solo from JP! BRAVO!

  • Fav riffs:

    3:30

    5:20

  • hmm reminds me of mega death

  • @Chaosxdeath1 Dream Theater are BETTER than Megadeth. I can say this with Megadeth being one of my favourite bands, but Dream Theater are a millioin times better :)

  • @fragrenade1 million*

  • @sosaysthelegend billion*

  • @sosaysthelegend Trillion! And sorry for the bad spelling, I usually double check but I was rushing D:

  • @fragrenade1 you cant compare apples to oranges. megadeth is also one of my favorite bands and its not fair to compare them like so. most of megadeth is heavy/thrash metal, but dream theater isnt even trying to accomplish anything close to that. theyre inventive, progressive, and almost symphonic. those couple qualities are something that make them sound SO fucking amazing, but its still not fair to compare them to a band that keeps the formatting for alot of their songs the same.

  • now this is a long ass song

  • @Magmelok oh they have longer songs than this

  • @Magmelok try Six Stages of Inner Turbulence as a whole, or Metropolis.

  • Comment removed

  • 5:20 is one of the best riffs ever!

  • @LegionOf3 I cant get over how great it is. Do you know if the riff was used in any of their other songs? Majority of the riffs in this song are from others, i just cant tell where this one is from. Let me know if you know anything, thanks =]

  • So this is like the "Portnoy" song? a Portnoy anthem ............. a goodbye song

  • The Glass Prison , This Dying Soul , The Root Of All Evil , Repentance and The Shattered Fortress are :

  • @patriotpizzaman We can access Wikipedia too, you know.

  • @Kyuubikku well its just in case if SOPA passes (low chance)

  • @MrIdontknowanyname Youtube would be gone too.

  • @Kyuubikku Yeah,or some shit like that

  • @patriotpizzaman The Twelve Step Suite.

  • The Twelve Step Suite.

  • The Shattered Fortress concludes the Suite, featuring the last three parts Restraint, Receive, Responsible. It is the fourth track on Black Clouds & Silver Linings. Portnoy considers the track as the grand finale of the Suite, and knew it would really be made up of all the musical and lyrical references from the past, and bring them all together to wrap it all up.

  • Before starting to write the track, the band listened to all four of the previous tracks in the Suite, making notes on the progressions of the parts and the melodies they wanted to reprise.

  • it was so long time ago i listening to these guys so i forgot what kind of metal they plaied but now i remember it's proggresive metal XD

  • I always expect the Octavarium solo to happen at 9:20.

  • i love the solo from 10:00 to 10:15

  • 7:17 is it Petrucci´s voice?? Hehe

  • Love dt, but this song is like a fucking medley of all their songs, i know all their song and i tell you it's a copy from their past, always good to listen, but don't try to fool us dt!

  • just seacrh for twelve step suite on wikipedia and all your questions will be answered

  • 3:02 EPIC

  • What an awesome dark voice round 8:00 !

  • 5:54 - 6:09 is a riff from The Glass Prison. It's not in the Solo, but in the guitar riff.

  • After Escape From The Glass Prison

  • fucking wicked solo.

  • Really DT is one of my favourite grops.. but this song always remember me a copy of the root of al evil.. just see the lyrics or see my example.. (here 8:25 to 9:30 ). and if you search the song (/watch?v=RgAc7ekYmVA) look minute 6:25 to 7:30...

  • @qwertyseba this part 6:25 to 6:30 its beyond this life live at budokan

  • @qwertyseba That's because both of these songs are part of Portnoy's Twelve Step Suite. Just search "Twelve Step Suite" up on the search bar there, and prepare for 56 minutes of insane levels of awesome.

  • @Kyuubikku Yes you're right! I never thought it. Thank you for the ob.

  • @Kyuubikku thank you for telling the world this!!! you are obviously going to heaven because you worship the dream theater gods

  • its like listening compact disk club commercial selling dream theater albums!

  • they called mustaine to sing

  • Lyrics from "The Root of All Evil"

  • @tacoman974 Lyrics from the twelve step suite, google it.

  • @lhc89 will mike mangini sing it like mike does portnoy does ?

  • @lsmartin96 I thought they were going to eliminate the 12 step suite from they're live shows completely? Isn't it so?

  • @ruruio Yes.

  • i love the "glass prison" theme revisited ^^

  • @Rhyddry also it's like a fusion between "glass prison" and "this dying soul"

  • lil wayne can play this

    lololololololol

  • @DX3ii Are you fucking serious?

  • where the fuck did the bone thugs-n-harmony intro voice come from?? =/, 5 tru thugs from the double glock...krayzie, layzie, bizzy, wish, and flesh and that nigga dj uneek. XD...cool points for whom ever get that reference.

  • @blackdragon6 spit yo game ;)

  • @Xx5tAcHgunxX sir...you are a god among insects.....

  • @blackdragon6 I got an appreciation for all music, except pop... that goes without saying.

  • why is every comment directed at another youtuber?

  • The end of this song is equal the beginning of The Glass Prision

  • @34Otavio34 Really?? No shit...

  • The riff at 1:55 and the riff for the chorus at 2:48 is played in the exact same order for The Glass Prison, but there is no singing and synth.

  • @sourcegamer101 This dying soul is also referred in the solo of the beginning, and @jere9992 medley stuff happens in all Mike Portnoy Alcoholism´s songs, but new stuff is never missing in them.

  • @sourcegamer101 this song is all about pieces from others

  • @sourcegamer101 Wow, it's exactly the same! It's like the whole goddamn song is a slightly different version of The Glass Prison!

  • Comment removed

  • essa musica e #panca

  • 3:45 he reminds me of dave mustaine singing

  • @obiwamo I AGREE!! alot of songs he sounds like dave mustaine

  • What's all this hostility about? Just enjoy the music. If you don't like it, then don't listen, plain and simple.

  • The replay button is the shattered fortress

  • "That where there is discord, I may bring harmony."

Makes me think of ponies. And I'm okay with that.

  • @dominator7002

Well someone PMV'd Octavarium, so this would be excellent as well.

  • @Subrick I know, I saw that. And Rudess actually though it was pretty cool too.

  • @dominator7002

What stuff from the show do you think would work well in a PMV of this song?

  • @Subrick Shit, I'm not really sure. Maybe Panic Attack for Pinkamena. Or Six Degrees for The Return of Harmony. Haven't really thought about it.

  • @Subrick Derp. Didn't read that right. Still, though, I'm not sure.

  • the glass prison and this dying soul!!

  • 668 blind people thought that like bar was a dislike bar. Otherwise, how can you even like this gay song?

  • @Mindfucker92 allow me to answer your question what now is 689 people that actually liked dream theater one day decided they were going to listen to this song and said to themselvse "my god this is amazing" and clicked the like button none of them were blind deaf or dumb in any shape or form but regular people with an extraordinary taste in music pass this story to your friends and your enemies for they may want to know as well

  • @ghostdude222 Your nickname is "ghostdde222" you are even gayer than this song, I can't accept your explanation.

  • @Mindfucker92 actually its "ghostdude222" and so be it you didnt have to accept it but thats just the way it happened

  • @ghostdude222 That was just a typo. Dumb people start correcting grammar and typing mistakes when they are outta bloody arguments.

  • @Mindfucker92 since when did this become an argument im not arguing at all and your probably from england or act like you are one of the two which would explain your bad temper most british teenage dudes usually arent too fond of other people more or less their taste in music

  • @ghostdude222 I'm pretty fucking far from Britain either physically or mentally. And I'm not a teenager at all. Did you escape from the asylum our you'r just affected by smoking weed non-stop?

  • @Mindfucker92 weed doesnt screw with your brain it just makes you tired and hungry and gets you high and if your not a teenager then your probably an adult and i said you were british cause of the text you were using sounds like something a british person would use and if your an adult then i really dont know what to say to you cause im only 13 and im acting more rationally than you are

  • @ghostdude222 You are 13? That's why you are so unstable mentally, when you grow up, have sex etc, your hormones will settle down, until then you are an immature child, who, according to the speaking manner and behaviour is acting in any way, but rationally. The fact that I used the word "bloody" means that I'm brit? Yeah it's used there extensively and almost never in US, but...ah come on, grow up dude.

  • @Mindfucker92 if you dont like dream theater, my good man, then what music do you listen to?

  • @ShiftyStealthy There are tons of other bands of the same genre that dream theater belongs too, as well as tons of other genres. Think outside of the box, mate.

  • @Mindfucker92 im not trying to attack you in any way like all of these people are, im just asking what kind of music or bands you like if it isnt dream theater then what is it? im not a narrow-minded person and i do "think outside the box" but youve just assumed that im close-minded and all i listen to is dream theater. so ill ask again, what kind of music do you listen to? because its obvious now that you dont listen to dream theater

  • @ShiftyStealthy I didn't assume that you are close minded, mate. I just tried to make a point. I listen to rock, rap, jazz, classic. But in any genre there are bands or composers that I do like, and there are those that I don't. That's it.

  • @Mindfucker92 i understand that, see as im typing this comment im listening to the prog rock group YES. but i too listen to rock, and classic rock like led zeppelin, pink floyd, the beatles. i also listen to some classic old school metal like judas priest and iron maiden. althoug i cannot stand rap, rap is terrible to me, i need a rockin guitar solo to play air guitar to lol as cheesy as that may seem. but rap...not my thing

  • @ShiftyStealthy But what's the point? (BTW, By classic I meant classic music, like chopin and beethoven, not classic rock.)

  • @Mindfucker92 what do you mean whats the point???

  • @ShiftyStealthy Uh, I mean, why did you ask that?

  • @Mindfucker92 well because you seem to be bent on hating dream theater for some reason and they are one of my fevourite bands so i just wanted to understand why oyu were and what music you prefer instead of attacking you like the other people on this video seem to be doing

  • @ShiftyStealthy That's great that you found an adequate way to look into my opinion. I appreciate that, mate :) But the thing is that I'm not hating DT, I just didn't like the song.

  • @Mindfucker92 so are you saying that you like other dream theater songs then?

  • @ShiftyStealthy I like change of seasons, on the back of angels and this one are gay and I haven't listened to any others so far.

  • @Mindfucker92 well isnt that nice

  • @ShiftyStealthy I hope you weren't referring to me. If you read the actual conversation, you'll see that isn't the case.

  • @QcatDoesGames i wasnt refering to anyone in particular

  • @ShiftyStealthy I figured. There were only 3 or 4 people that responded to him though, from what I saw.

  • @QcatDoesGames yeah i also just figured that if he was hating on dream theater then alot of people would get mad at that

  • @Mindfucker92 i love how all adults on youtube are so stereotypical of children on youtube and think theyre all immature and dont know anything and sure i have alot of experiences ahead of me im aware of that but im not mentally unstable or anything like that your just making a big deal of something that doesnt even matter in the first place

  • @ghostdude222 I'm not making a big deal. I just said that this song sucks. And that's all about that. I have that damn right to express my opinion about anything, anywhere and anytime. And you guys, just get mad about that, you think that I'm either a hater or just trolling. Not a single of my opinions about you is based on stereotypes but on what you say.

  • @Mindfucker92 but what good is coming to a video listening to the music and saying it sucks going to do you its just gonna make people mad people dont like it when they here someone else say that the music they listen to sucks i mean seriously how hard could it be to see that people are going to get mad for you coming along and saying the music they listen to sucks listen to your own music and we will stay with our its simple no need to start problems

  • @ghostdude222 Hey kid, are you that retarded? I just came here, because I was interested in this song. I listened to it. It sucked. I wrote that it fucking sucked. I wouldn't get mad if someone told me that "killing in the name" or chopin's ballad sucks.

  • @Mindfucker92 well good for you but dream theater fans are very protective over there music and you put a comment on change of seasons saying how gay the song was why would you to two songs from the same band and say how much you hated the music

  • @ghostdude222 Admit it, that's not my fault that the song is gay, When I listen to something, I expect something from it, what I received from these two, is the immense amount of gayness. And I don't give a fuck about how mad dream theater fanboys get when they see negative remarks about gay songs of their lovely band.

  • @Mindfucker92 then stop talking to me and get the fuck out of here

  • @ghostdude222 LOL, U MAD, BRO?

  • @Mindfucker92 im not your bro your friend your acquaintence your amigo or anything im simply saying all your doing right here right now is making stupid remarks and trying to start a fight keep your opinion to yourself and move on

  • @ghostdude222 Don't teach me what to do kid. I'm 7 years older than your dumb arse is, so just bite your lip and suck it up.

  • @Mindfucker92 hahahaha you wish it was that easy dont you well someone has to tell you that what youre doing is pointless and meaningless go make fun of someone elses musical taste im sure youve had enough fun here

  • @ghostdude222 Isn't there anybody in your family, who would tranq you the fuck out? You don't seem to be backing down. I've told you already, that this bloody song is gay, and no comments of some immature wankers will ever make me think opposite.

  • @Mindfucker92 yeah you dont like the song i get so leave now im not backing down ive been trying to get you to leave for a long time now your the one that seems to want to stay and yell at people you dont even know why dont you just leave and never come back we get you dont like the song youve made that very clear so just stay away from dream theater FOREVER you obviously dont like the music

  • @ghostdude222 As I said, my dear sir, I won't leave after you tell me to leave. What about yelling, that's you, who's doing that, mate. As you can notice from my comments, I'm rather calm, if you can't, then you are retarded.

  • @Mindfucker92 Every time you come back to argue, you're giving this video another view. That makes this video more likely to be seen. That, in turn, results in more people listening to this song and becoming fans of the band. Ultimately, the more hate you try and spread, the more it backfires and actually helps out the band. On behalf of the Dream Theater fan base, thank you.

  • @QcatDoesGames The more views this song gets, the more gay people we can discover. Is everything clear? I'm not spreading hate, I'm just saying that the song is gay.

  • @Mindfucker92 or rather your trying to express your own opinion which everyone else here disagrees with and what do you mean the more gay people we can discover your the one coming back to the song you hate so much everyone else hear is enjoying the music you coming back is giving it more views which we do appreciate but we dont appreciate the fact that you wont just leave forever i mean what goal are you possibly achieving by staying here and arguing with teenagers if your and adult act like 1

  • @ghostdude222 I just want to show you, that I'm peacefully commenting while you, wild fanboys start arguing about nothing. And yes, you are all gay.

  • @Mindfucker92 i honestly dont understand why you cant just leave and put this all behind you its not really a big deal the fact that your still here arguing about nothing at this point shows what a man you are which your definition of a man is totally screwed up thats not being a man thats just not giving a shit which those two things are on differently levels and trying to look manly thats funny i honestly dont care about how manly i seem to you because your opinion on manliness is just silly

  • @Mindfucker92 Well I'm glad you're "discovering" gay people on a daily basis. You honestly don't consider calling a song gay, then calling people who listen to it gay, retarded, pot-smokers, et cetera as spreading hate? I'm very interested in hearing what you DO define as such.

  • @QcatDoesGames Your gayness is expressed more in attacking me for the reason that I dislike the song than the fact that you are listening to it. Real men, who like something never give a single fuck about those who don't like the same. what about you, you're just gay and emasculated fanboys who try to look manly writing cheap comments.

  • @Mindfucker92 I'm glad you could give me your clearly infallible definition of a real man. Unfortunately, I'm NOT trying to prove my masculinity to some stranger through a Youtube comment section. I made a simple point in saying that your anger is, if anything, just helping the band. I don't know where you got this notion that I attacked you, nor how you have the supposed ability to magically determine the sexuality of anyone who likes this song.

  • @QcatDoesGames I'll try to explain. First of all, I'm not angry because "dream theater" is well known prog-rock band. That would be strange if I was. What about the word "gay" it's being used in the different context than sexual orientation, more like "bad" or in other cases as a synonym to "twilight saga." As you can see, I don't give a fuck about your sexuality, I'm calling you gay because you start pointless debates with me telling me something that's not true.

  • @Mindfucker92 First of all, I'm very confused as to why you put the band's name in quotes. That aside, I never even remotely implied an attempt to debate. I also never said you were angry that DT was a well known prog-rock band. First you claim I attacked you, which NEVER happened, and now this. I don't know why you're making these things up. I made one comment, just trying to point out that your comments here are a waste of your own time. You're the one that has dragged it out into a debate.

  • @QcatDoesGames That's exactly my point! You guys start talking about my own time and my own life. That's me who owns those things, so that's totally up to me how I waste it.

  • @Mindfucker92 That's exactly my point! I never said you couldn't waste it. I just don't understand why you would want to, when it isn't beneficial for anyone.

  • @QcatDoesGames And that's not something you should care about much, especially if it isn't beneficial for anyone, therefore for you too. How can't you understand that? Do you have mental problems?

  • @Mindfucker92 And now we come back to the insults. I DON'T care that much. But even if I did, according to your argument you shouldn't care about what I care about. Complete and utter hypocrisy. Again, I made one comment hoping to dissuade you from continuing because it's ruining other people's experience listening to the music. That's it. The fact that you have to resort to embarrassingly outlandish and childish name calling and unwarranted accusations makes you look like a fool.

  • @QcatDoesGames Are you referring to my nickname? Yeah, I actually don't give much of a care about what YOU care about but, when that's until you leave that with yourself. After you've started talking to me about something that you care about (which I shouldn't be caring about) that makes me care about my right to stay away from your personal opinions about me. Pretty fucking much of tautology, but I hope it's clear to you.

  • @Mindfucker92 Is English your second language? I didn't imply anything in regards to your nickname. I honestly feel like there's a language barrier in this conversation. Either way, looking at your channel, it seems like going onto videos you don't like and asserting supremacy with some sort of false sense of authority seems to be a hobby of yours. Your behavior only concerns me because it's making me lose faith in the human race, seeing people as uneducated as you assaulting others' opinions.

  • @QcatDoesGames You mentioned some "embarrassingly outlandish and childish name" which I somehow connected to my youtube username. Yes, I'm not a native speaker, and I'm still confused how another guy here thought that I was brit. Anyway, this kind of activity being my hobby doesn't make me uneducated and you can blame me in anything but assaulting others' opinions. Actually that's you, who is assaulting me, while I'm just peacefully commenting that this song is gay.

  • @Mindfucker92 Actually, I said name calling, not name. I didn't say you were uneducated in general, the implication was that you seem uneducated in regards to the music you are criticizing, which I assume is why the only thing you have to say about it is "it's gay", and that anyone who disagrees with your opinion is gay for caring. Please refer me to the point where I assaulted you or your opinion. Until you can actually demonstrate the point where I did anything like that, you're just lying.

  • @QcatDoesGames I think, remembering the comment where you blamed me in spreading hate should be enough for proving my truth. How is it possible to predict the intellectual abilities of the person by the way he describes the song (even if he uses only one word) This is because the song is neither terrible, nor gross or anything, it's just gay. Admit it, I'm not here to show you and others my education and English knowledge.I came here, listened to the bloody song and posted my opinion laconically.

  • @Mindfucker92 You're not understanding me. Saying that you're spreading hate is not an insult. You're saying something hateful about the song, which results in others being hateful towards you, followed by your retaliation. You ARE spreading hate, and it's a fact. Again, I did NOT assume your level of general intellect from that comment. I'm saying that based on the fact that you could only give that as criticism, you give the impression that you are uneducated about the music you're insulting.

  • @QcatDoesGames I didn't say it's insult. It's another way of attacking my opinions. There's obviously big difference between insulting and attacking. That's totally up to you to ignore my comment or answer back, you've got options so that's you who is making decision. I didn't slam the door of your house and didn't shout in your face that this particular song of dream theater is gay, I didn't brake your furniture an therefore I didn't force you to hate me or to answer. The same goes to others.

  • @Mindfucker92 So what? If I said "Hey, you're a piece of shit", then you have the option to not respond. I'd still be spreading hate though. The fact that you didn't destroy my property or assault me in person doesn't change that. If I said something like "Jews are inferior", just because any Jews reading it have the option to ignore it doesn't mean I'm not being hateful. Do you honestly not understand that?

  • @QcatDoesGames Being hateful to nation or directly to a person is spreading hate. But here I write about some band, neither of whose members you know personally. I'm not even talking about the band in general, just about this particular song. And whatever I write here, even if I say that this song is shit, crap, worse than twilight, worst than JB, neither of these statements hit you directly or indirectly, as well as neither of youtube users, therefore I don't spread hate.

  • @Mindfucker92 You just don't get it. I didn't know any of the Jews who died in the Holocaust personally either. It is still spreading hate. You didn't just call the song gay. You said that anyone who cared about your opinion was gay. If you honestly believe that, I don't know why you even commented in the first place. Through this conversation, you've proven yourself to be hateful, ignorant, a liar, and a thick-headed bigot. I know part of it is the language barrier, but this is just ridiculous.

  • @QcatDoesGames U MAD, BRO? :D Uh, just look through this comment again: "Your gayness is expressed more in attacking me for the reason that I dislike the song than the fact that you are listening to it....." Obviously this verbal altercation between you and me is not because of the language barrier, or my silliness, or hatred, or ignorance, or lies, but because you can't just get the proper sense out of the simple sentence.

  • @Mindfucker92 And yet you still can't show me any point prior to that where I actually did attack you, meaning you ARE a liar :D

Do you need me to point all the other examples where what I said about you is correct?

  • @QcatDoesGames I've got some growing feeling like I'm talking to the patient of the asylum. just sayin...

  • @Mindfucker92 Aww. You have to go back to the same unoriginal insults now that you have no actual argument? Keep it up, seeing you do the pseudo-intellectual shuffle is very amusing.

  • @QcatDoesGames Sir, your mistake here is that you acknowledged a troll as if their opinion was actually valid.

  • @lego64 I just found it amusing. I guess you could call me an anti-troll.

  • @QcatDoesGames good guy greg?

  • @ghostdude222 dont even bother aruing with that mindfucker, he is mindfucked himself, just let him be in his pathetic cave of solitude

  • Respond to this video... i understand but i hate sitting here and watching people like him trying to deface the good music people are trying to listen to someone has to tell him that hes not doing anyone any good not even himself just stick with your own music i mean how hard could it be to not make fun of other peoples musical taste
