This song was dedicated to Ryan (I forgot his family name). He died from AIDS as a child at the end of 80s. I remembered this very well. The best song of Elton John.
Elton recorded that lovely song days after losing his friend, the great Freddie Mercury. I can see that this amazing song still brings so much emotion for Elton.
God bless the lost souls to AIDS. May a cure be found.
This song is more than just a song... is every single man or woman who suffers from discrimination... is tears of a boy or a girl who just wants support and love from those who turned theirs backs on them just for being HIV.
LETS STOP THE HATE, THE IGNORANCE, THE DISCRIMINATION AND LETS START LOVING EVERYONE NO MATTER WHAT!
DOES ANYONE KNOW WHAT THE DATE OF THIS SHOW WAS? HE PLAYED 5 AIDS BENEFIT SHOWS AND I WAS AT THE SEPTEMBER 22, 1994 SHOW WITH A FULL MOON. I WAS SITTING ABOUT 7 ROWS FROM THE STAGE. THE FIRST HALF OF THE SHOW WAS JUST E. JOHN AND THEN RAY COOPER CAME OUT FOR THE SECOND HALF. ONE OF TOP 3 CONCERTS OF MY LIFE!
@evadzed I was their also right behind u!And if its any help,do you remember what he was wearing the night you were there? He was wearing this outfit the night I there! And yes easily one of the best Elton,or for that mater any concert I have been too!It was moving, earth shaking, and leaves me with the memory of someone I loved dearly,to shortly later only lose!
I LOVE this song but this video portrays a VERY HEALTHY looking 'son', not at all representative of the ravages of AIDS. Otherwise, the genius of Elton John prevails, as always.
Usually I don´t like TV-movies, but yesterday we have seen a movies about AIDS. At the end they played this song. Well, I can´t remember what the German name of this movie was, and one can think about Elton John what ever one wants, (sorry it´s not really my music), but in my opinion, with this song it was an emotional final.
@matjesworld1 The name of the film is "And the Band Played On"--it was made by HBO, who has made some terrific original movies, including "Barbarians at the Gate".
i was in school to day and saw the "ryans story"a ssembly and this song was playing for the montage thing and i feel so bad for him and this song is like making me cry
Just in case people don't know what this song is about I will share it. Elton is talking about a father coming to grips with one his son dying, and two coming to grips about the fact he is dying of Aids I was at this concert and this song will burn in my heart forever especially since 10 years after this concert I sat at my own fathers bedside and watched him die! Do not ever put off what can be said today thinking you have tomorrow! I didn't!
I learned early on as I had many gay friends; one in particular loved his lavish x-mas parties...I went into the bedroom to check on him; he was crying. He told me it would be his last party. Sat w/ my arms @ him & tried to reassure him but I knew as well (he died that summer) by age 45 half my friends had died. Song reminds me of Jeffrey.
@Bodebodango I am so sorry about your father and I am glad this song reached you this way. I love this song and the message it carries, after hearing this song I feel like a religious person going around spreading the word of God. God bless you and your father, take care.
@Bodebodango Amen! I am sorry about your father, it is true that life is too short and we must always say what is on our minds but I bet whatever was on your mind that you wished you could have told your father, I bet he already knew even before he died. I tell my mom I love her and she would always say 'I already know that'.
I was at that concert it was amazing Just Elton for the 1st hour and a half and then him and ray cooper for the next hour and a half. It was the Aids foundation concert, put together by Disney! My girlfriend and I went there with no tickets and went to the box office window. There was a couple in front of us trying to buy tickets and when they were told the price decided they would think about it! bad move, those were the last tickets and we bought them for $350.00 each and will never regret it!
Not disappointed @ all. Who cares why he wrote it? If it means something to you ? You can attach any meaning to it you want regardless of what politics of the song-writer or the groups who politicize the song for their own selfish means.
A good song is a good song to the LISTENER not the writer or the politics of him/her.
Elton John gave an interview that is listed on UTube about this song. It is about a son coming out to his father and he is dying of Aids. His father loves him unconditionally and it helps his son make his journey.....sorry to disappoint you.
One of the greatest songs i´ve ever heard !

...that kind of understanding sets me free..
These are the words I need for my hope, that someday I´ll get the chance for being set free...
And Taupin found them like all the other incredible words for my different feelings,
expressed by wonderful music of Elton John.

the first time i heard it....was one of those songs that "move" you.
if you are a father......you totally understand all the dynamics of this beautiful rendition.
saxguitarman 2 years ago
Bernie Taupin is one hell of a lyricist.
Elton can makes melodies and performs like no other, but the words are also top class.

Period.
