Thanks for the lesson as I have been struggling with arpeggios for a couple of months now. Your suggestion of just hitting every second note of the scale or mode just made the whole thing way way easier for me.
ok seems I'm the only dumbass here.... what is this swung 8 note pattern? And hit every other note on the way up? By other, do you mean every second note?
Swing is "da- ta da- ta", rather than straight "da da da da." 8th notes means one bar is da-ta da-ta da-ta da-ta. Yes, every 2nd note. Chords/ arpeggios are made by hitting every 2nd note from the scale eg 1, 3, 5, b7. Very cool way to get nice sounds and break out of scales a bit.
That really was a very simple way of describing it, and clears up--as billysfender so appropriate put it--the confusion that so many so-called experts like to push into your head. Music really isn't that difficult if you learn just a LITTLE music (jazz) theory and put what you hear in your head and music played by the greats into practice. I heard another guitar teacher state that at the beginning of practice, after warm up, practice the stuff that you do NOT usually do...it's key to improving

two eighth notes = (quarter note + eighth note)
Both occupy one beat
also think
50/50 = 66.67/33.33
