@inlife9 You don't have to but it really does help make combat smoother. I play in 2 pathfinder games. 1 with maps and one without. Both games are fun but the mapped game runs more smoothly with less confusion.
not Really, I've known people who's played other games with counters or vague items if the creature is large or bigger. Not to mention if you play online there's applications like maptools where you can end up creating counters that corrispond to characters in the game and monsters.
The game mats support both water-based and dry erase markers and will not stain when permanent markers are used on them. As a GM, it's nice to not have to worry about player's ruining a mat by mistake from using the wrong marker and it folds into a standard letter size for easy transport. Can't recommend these enough.

Kurt, I think that since you don't actually play Pathfinder, as you've previously stated, then calling yourself a fan of the game is inappropriate. "I appreciate Pathfinder" would have been a more proper statement.
We played Pathfinder but moved to Savage Worlds thanks to you Kurt. We haven't regretted it. I hope you'll be able to review the Hellfrost Bestiary and Gazeteer soon; awesome products.
My players and I do a mix of games, 4th edition, Deadlands, a bit of RIFTS, Exalted, and we are considering trying pathfinder. 4th works well for us but we are debating it, mostly in terms of trying to convert a few favorite classes from the latter part of 3rd over to Pathfinder.
The flip mats sound really cool. I don't play Pathfinder or D&D, I'm a Savage Worlds guy, but I might check out those mats just the same. I'd love to be able to use dry erase on a mat, my Chessex wet-erase mat isn't really as awesome as I hoped it would be.
One thing alot of GM's like about the Bestiary is that each monster is blocked off on 1 page (sometimes 2). Each entry does not spill a paragraph or a few lines on the next page.
This makes it an easy Xerox copy or 1-2 page print from the PDF.
Wizards got bumped off by Paizo. Sure they did. I ca nvouch for the screen. I bought it myself and well worth the moeny spent. The Bestirary is very good. Though before I bought it was presented as being the second comig of the MM. Better than the 4E one etc. That the descriptions for the monsters were much better than the 4E one. I compared the two and I see no difference. Unlike the 3.5 MM the monster write-ups imo are easier to read and well written. Two thumbs up.
I love Pathfinder, the only problem is that I either have groups that refuse to use anything that doesn't say "Dungeons & Dragons" or groups that believe OWOD was the greatest thing ever and won't try anything new.
I do wish, however, that Paizo would release either a VTT or at least an official ruleset for Fantasy Grounds because then I could just play with people online.
The bestiary is very beatiful IMO, however, I need some help on how to convert people from 3.5 to PF. Most of their complaints have been "The system doesnt matter aslong as the story is good" and "It is just a pure 3.5 ripoff" any thoughts on how to convert them?
Don't bother trying to convert them. I personally like the Pathfinder system but i have to much 3.5 stuff to bother transfering to Pathfinder & there is already to much pathfinder stuff to warrant the buy in cost. & yes the bestiary is stunningly beautiful.
have you seen CthulhuTech? Eclipse Phase? Those are the best. I still prefer 3.x edition artwork, Paizo is too anime for my tastes, but i can see why people like it, it's not bad at all.
@geeksqrd maybe. I know those guys. Exile Games' Hollow Earth Expedition books are beautiful. They have an old classy feel to them. Cubicle 7's Doctor Who and Lord of the Rings books/box sets are nice, too.
I loved the Beastiary, I just got it and it gives you a lot of detail on the critters, especially the goblinoids. And there's a few new critters there, to boot.
I've never really like playing on campaign specific books though, so I usually just write up my own campaign worlds. My old ongoing one was just edited for 4e; but with Pathfinder I decided to write a new one, getting a bit more of a feel of the Norse Eddas, as well as with a bit of the "Past worlds" note the mesoamerican cultures had.
Seems like 'The Bestiary' isn't really an essential item if you already own previous 3.x monster books, but it does look like a nicely produced package.
As for those GameMastery Flip-Mats, I LOVE them and I own quite a few. I've used them for every genre under the sun, as well.
looks good the lvl 1 story looks cool love the art

Do you have to use miniatures with this game?

I remember, way back when, the DMG of DnD had some paper matts that, also had the blank squares. Do these have them as well?.

The typography used in these books is ..the down side to their "prettiness"

are figures necessary to play this game?
MJtheKandyman 1 year ago
@MJtheKandyman I dont think so, my friends and I use graphing paper and draw X's representing our characters.
Claizen 1 year ago
@Claizen That's what I do. Much easier than hauling out a huge battlemap.
But I like the idea of these dry erase maps!

The Bestiary sounds surprisingly well thought out and put together.
Now if only Pathfinder wasn't just D&D with 80's punk rocker hair. ;-)

Kurt when are you going to review Dark Heresy or Rogue Trader from the Warhammer 40k universe?

Your players know that this game is actually based on DnD 3.5? Its just a high-power version of it with some adjustments making it very cool
beatboxpeej 1 year ago
Yep, they know. but "It's not D&D".

I always look at bestiaries as a sort of guideline. I get bored with the same familiar monsters, I guess.
