Well, it was a sad moment indeed. But I don't think it is fair to let a punctual incident detract significantly from a man's career. Zidane has let his temper loose a couple of times more alright but he's been a sensible person on the pitch most of his career.
If the incident with Materazzi hadn't happened in a World Cup final, it would be pretty much forgotten in months.

Besides all that, Pelé played through the 50's/60`s at the highlights of his career, and back then offensive football was not quite as hard as it was from the 80's onward (catenaccio is to blame for that), defenses were pretty... "laid back". If you take a look at some of Pele's goals you can spot the defense watching Pele's show more often than attacking.

I believe Maradona was the best in terms of sheer football technique. Awesome speed and balance too.
But his attitude was never the best, and that's part of what makes a genius too. Football players like Johan Cruyff or Zidane have been much more succesful in terms of football achievements because or their greater sense of discipline and compromise.

He would have had to score 50 goals every single season for 25 years. If ANYONE has proof that he scored all those goals I'd like to see it.
Maradona is pretty good; not quite as skillful as Robbie Savage but it's close.

Of course I saw the World Cup final. And being disciplinated is not the same as being a saint. Your temper doesn't have to be angelical, it's just about not letting all the praise get to your head, keeping a low profile out of the pitch, not neglecting training (like Ronaldo or Ronaldinho do) and be professional enough. You can headbutt, if you do it just once. ;P

Oh, you mean training discipline. I suppose that makes sense, although I have to imagine they sort of go hand in hand...the ability to block out all distractions and train vs. the ability to block out your temper on the pitch. I guess I'm just sad about the World Cup Final.

The numbers on the CV is what all Pele fans rely on. I dont care about statistics, but have watched games with both Pele and Maradona. IMHO there's no doubt: Maradona is number one.

Maradona was a better player than Pele was, IMO. Pele never proved himself in any real competetive leagues (German, English, Spanish, Italian or even French). Also, at international level Pele was surrounded by players like Jairzinho, Garrincha, Gerson, Carlos Alberto, Rivelino and Tostao. Maradona had who? Valdano?!
