It's a matter of taste. Joni's version is more sentimental while Buffy's is celebratory. Both do a wonderful job of capturing a different feeling within the same song. To me it's more testament to the power of Joni's songwriting than anything. But people will slag when they can.

Beaut. Can't say I've ever heard Joni's recording of this (yeah, I know she wrote it, so don't ask what rock have I've been under!!) But I did hear this version on my local radio station back in the early 70s and it's stuck.

Buffy's magical version was released a couple years BEFORE Joni's vastly inferior (read:slow campfire dirge) version. The sound on this post is not as good as one by kazuecho. Sainte Marie jump-started Mitchell's career, a la Baez introducing Dylan to her huge audience.

@taddyd1, Yes, Buffy's is the version I've loved for many years. I have both in my record/CD collection (am also a great fan of Joni Mitchell), but Buffy works such magic with everything she sings!

Ive never heard a decent joni cover,apart maybe the Tom Rush one.They all try to uptempo her songs but none of them have stood the test of time, as have her originals

I first heard this on The Strawbwerry Statement a year ago which TCM (UK) shows occasionally. It stuck in my mind so much that it led me to finding Youtube and the Joni Mitchell version. I prefer this version as the JM version, though beautiful, does drag on.

taddy1, I must disagree, to me Buffy sounds too hyper. I prefer to hear the song by the original composer because it is more personal that way. Anyone who does cover songs looses a lot of the original feeling and emotion of the song, and being detached from the emotion of the original creator, they develop it in a different manner. Lucky for Buffy, she didn't have to do any work writing this one! Different, but not better. My ear and loyalties always return to the original composer.

Ridiculous, Did you like Burt Bachrach better than Dionne, Dusty and Aretha too? Paul Willaims better than Ray Charles of Sreisand. Besides, the world knew this version 3 yrs before Roberta Anderson's. Joni was thought to sound like Sainte Marie when she came out.

Did Aretha loose the feeling on Respect? There's a versiopn of this with much better sound

Hard to answer your question because you refer to the original composer/composition as a "version". It is so much more than that. It is the birth of a song. I believe Buffy has more respect for Joni than you do.

She has a very interesting accent, (Cree Indian, from Canada), and a much higher vibrato than most singers. I really enjoy Joni's version too. They are so different!

This Buffy Ste Marie version was a 1970 soundtrack from the anti-war movie The Strawberry Statement. I saw the movie then as young boy and I always remember it as a beautiful romance story, and always kept the beautiful song version in my heart. See the YouTube Strawberry Statement movie trailer.
