If your battery has died in your DC it probably due to the fact that it has stopped recharging the battery so its safe and cheap to use the battery i use in this video cus i have two dreamcast one still has working batter the and the other failed so replaced with this type and it runs just fine but this is not always the case
1.) Your lighting sucks and your video is way too blurry. 2.) You tell us to use the wrong battery (it's a ML2430, not a CR2032). 3.) I have no idea what kind of tape you are suggesting we use. It sounds like you're saying cell tape??
A modification would definitely be possible, but I don't believe anyone has tried. But, it's easier to just replace the CR2302 with another one whenever it dies.
The problem is that you'll lose your saved games in the Saturn's internal memory, though, so getting a backup memory cartridge is a good idea (though not always a cheap solution).
@Watcher3223 unfortunately my backup carts are not working properly. I can transfer data to them in the bios but I can no longer save directly to them in game. Either the cart pins are pushed apart just a bit so that the connectors aren't having a pure connections or my cart is just going bad. i read at the assemblers forums that you can use alternative means for battery back up but they do not provide any tutorials on how to do them.
DO NOT ATTEMPT THIS YOU CAN POTENTIALLY RUIN YOUR DREAMCAST. The system will attempt to charge these batteries and they *can* explode. If you don't know what you're doing, don't try.
@flannel2000 I did not state that this is the correct way to do it any one thinking so is stupid and any one who points this out is wasting there time as every one knows and I didnt use the right battery as I used the type of CR that isn't rechargeable but you can get a kind of CR battery that is.
@arranmc182 the correct battery is ML 2032.can easily be bought from places like Farnell.it needs to be re-chargable battery or there is risk of leakage and explosion and board damage.
@micol19 Maybe Sega shouldn't have cheaped out on the hardware then there would be no reason for any videos on any problems cus iv seen way older consoles that still work like brand new like the Sega matersystem and megadrive, and the SNES & N64 most of the all still work with no problems to this day
@arranmc182 get a vertical cr2032 battery holder off ebay and solder that in. its very easy mod and now i just pop ot the used battery and replace it simples.
hey my dreamcast doesnt read discs. every time i turn my dreamcast on it shows the date and time screen and then when i get past that and try to play a game, it says please "insert a disc". I tried cleaning the laser, tightening all the screws, and turning the little screw within the dreamcast that helps recalibrate the laser but nothing has worked. Will changing the battery help this problem? please reply! thanx!
thanks m8!just yesterday i cracked my dc open to change the LED and was wondering on how i would hold the battery in place after i replaced it!ducktape!!!genius :)!well, not really, but its still good!cheers
@DarkMessiah6 your a fucking idiot, trying to act like an elitist douche. the fact is if you dont know what your talking about, then dont open your mouth faggot
Wait, aren't CL-2032's non-rechargeable? Since the DC tries to recharge whatever batteries are in there when its on, wouldn't it make the batteries explode? Please, correct me if I'm wrong.
Yea the ML2032's are the ones to use. CR2032's may leak or explode after a while as they're not rechargable.
Need proof? Try recharging a non-rechargable AA battery and you'll see what i mean... I'd advise you to keep the hell away from it when it pops thpugh. lol.
I just replaced the battery on my Dreamcast today, because it was dead and also starting to leak. It came with a 3V ML2430, but I replaced it with a 2032 battery holder (for easy servicing in the future) containing a 3V ML2032. I also cleaned al the contact pins (including the Power in on the DC backside), because the console also kept rebooting out of nowhere on me.
If the Dreamcast has been in storage for a while, simply leave the Dreamcast turned on for as long as you can afford. The battery should recharge itself. In most cases, there will be no need for a replacement.
To test, after a good few hours (i'd recommend leaving it on for atleast 4 hours) turn it off, unplug it. give it enough time for the charge to dissipate from the motherboard (about 30 seconds should do) Then try again. It shouldn't ask you to set the clock if the battery has charged.
The actual battery needed is an ML2032 which is the rechargable variant of the CR2032s more commonly found in the dreamcast VMUs and watches.
I would not recommend using a CR2032 as non-rechargable batteries can explode if they are charges and the Dreamcast WILL attempt to recharge anything you put in there while it is powered on.
You can find the ML2032s online any place that sells batteries. Also try asking places like watch repair shops and Radioshack.
If the PC motherboard has a CR2032 in it already, you should stick with a CR2032. ML2032 is pretty uncommon and spot-welding connector tabs on a coin cell isn't easy. Do NOT attempt to solder those types of tabs on or you'll end up destroying the battery chemistry--get the surface hot enough to make a good weld and you'll jack up the battery.
I highly doubt any watch repair place would have a rechargable coin cell. And Radio Shack, doubtful as well. Online is probably best bet.
Also, just wanted to reiterate, most PC motherboards are NOT set up to use a rechargable battery system. In the past they have used 4.5V alkaline and 3V lithium batteries, but non-rechargable on both. If you put a rechargable battery in a system not designed for it, you'll only get the charge you had when you bought the battery; nothing more. With a lithium, it'll still last a while, but you're still getting no benefit from the rechargability since the mobo is not designed to charge it anyway
@arranmc182 Yes biggie, the stuff in coin cells is worse than in normal batteries and they are pretty nasty anyway. There is a big chance of a leak. The battery needs to be 3032 rechargable not CR3032!!!
@arranmc182 yea except unless you break the charging circuit it will try to recharge the battery which is bad and could make the battery leak. Its easy to replace a battery when you do it the stupid way...
Two rechargeable AAA batteries taped together then soldered to the contact points on the dreamcast. your dreamcast will alwaya try to recharge the battery so if you use the cr type as stated above then it will cause leakage and damage to your console. The original battery type is now impossible to find.
useful video, but the framerate on the video is a little frustratingly slow. Other than that, this really helps. Whether or not I decide to solder the battery on, you told me what kind of battery to purchase and where it is, so thanks a bunch!
why mark my comment as negetive? its perfectly valid, use a soldering iron & do the job properly, also I`v said it before & I`ll say it again ,you should`nt use cellotape, cos it causes moisture to collect & that will in time corrode your connections causeing more problems,if you dont want to listen & do a bodge job? then fine, its up to you...think on..
yes using a soldering iron is the best way to do it but this is a very simple way to do it the will make it easier to change battery next time i will annotate this in to the that this is not the proper way to do it but the simple way to do it

The battery that is used in the Dreamcast is an ML2020.
Watcher3223 8 months ago
For a replacement battery, you should use an ML2032 instead of a CR2032.
The difference between the two parts: the ML2032 is rechargeable whereas the CR2032 is not.
If you can't find a ML2032, seek an ML1220.

@Watcher3223 can I replace the battery in the saturn with a ML2032 instead of using the cr2032?

@fightclubhubbs
Sure you could, but why would you want to?
The Sega Saturn has no ability to recharge the battery, so there's no point in using an ML2302 in place of a CR2302.
