  • Korea has recovered No.1 position afterwards.

  • South Korean shipbuilders won a combined 3.29 million compensated gross tons (CGTs) in new orders in the January-March period, up 29 percent from a year earlier. South Korean shipbuilders accounted for 52.5 percent of the total new orders placed globally. Chinese shipbuilders clinched 1.95 million CGTs in the first quarter, a drop of 22 percent from a year earlier, and had 31 percent of the new orders placed during the cited period, according to data.

  • As for this year (2011) South Korea recaptured its status as the world's leading shipbuilding nation in terms of new orders in the first quarter by beating China by a wide margin.

  • This is a start but China lags behind significantly technically from Korea and Japan. This is the most relevant aspect of shipbuilding if they want this to transfer to military vessels. Korea will just move up to more technically sophisticated vessels meaning they'll be building better military vessels.

  • I still hate chinese bastards

  • @tackorgybe Are you jealous of China progress or you have just lost your job to Chinese competition.

  • @tackorgybe sure and this makes 1/5 people on the planet hate u.

  • @tackorgybe

Yes, 25% of the world population hates you.

  • China is the best not in terms of size and quantity. But it's a misleading data. One, 90% of their shipbuilding is concentrated on cheaper ships for domestic consumptions. Per ship, Korea average over 2 x profit than ones by China as their orders are mainly for export and more high cost ships. China is coming up fast. But they aren't nearly there yet. China taking 1st in quantity was inevitable due to large domestic market consumption.

  • @Xentradi97 You are right. However, the Chinese are also upgrading their skill and technology and have pleanty of money to invest in better toolings and build bigger and more sophiscated shipyards.

Steel is a major components and a cost factor in building ships. China produce 50% of the World steel and at much lower cost than Korea.

The Chinese have demonstrated they can catch up with anybody within a short period of time. If Japan and Korea can do it, the Chinese will.

  • @typhoonq Oh I'm sure if Korea could do it, there's no reason why China can't. And to point out, Koreans are not seating on their laurels like Japanese did back in 70's and 80's thinking Koreans would never catch up with them. It's such complacency and arrogance that caused Japan to falter and Korea to steam ahead. I know that China is trying to build more sophisticated shipyard but creating a shipyard culture and network that Korea has won't happen overnight.

  • @typhoonq And Koreans are fully aware of China's potential and the fact that their internal market consumption and market size will be a huge plus point for China in catching up with Korea. China will most certainly catch up with Korea's currently shipbuilding technology in time, Koreans will do what it can to build even more sophisticated and hightech ships to get ahead.
