I looked up articles on fat causing heart disease and obesity on google scholar the other day, and could not find ONE definitive article saying fat intake correlated with increased heart attack risk. However, i quickly found articles correlating heart disease risk with refined carbohydrate intake. High blood sugar is the culprit to western diseases, this will come to light soon enough after the government stops feeling embarassed that they are wrong.
Gary Taubes is a highly respected; one serious science nerd (respectfully of course). He's known to dig deep, back into decades of research for his studies. He studied applied physics at Harvard and aerospace engineering at Stanford, and has won numerous science-writing awards, including an MIT Knight Science Journalism Fellowship.
ABC is now my fav news channel..... FINALLY a news channel that doesnt have an extremely bias opinion against REAL healthy eating. every other interview ive seen with gary or robert lustig has made them out to sound crazy
@gyrate4 If youre going to watch forks over knives, watch the documentary FatHead too. Get both sides. Vegans have their own agenda to prove, and inflate the truth. Look up a non biased report on Dr Atkins. Three years before he died he developed cardiomyopathy, caused by a virus. His arteries were clear and even had a very health caridovascular system at 69. When he died from a blunt impact, so his body was swollen when they weighed in autopsy. Im sure they didnt tell you that though...
Apparently you are the idiot here. If you are trying to lose fat then it is all about calories in/out. Watch the video genius. The reason why this whole diet came out was to help people lose fat!! Insulin management doesn't require a low carb diet, it requires low glycemic carbs (complex carbs), sufficient fats and protein and most importantly cardio work which raises insulin sensitivity. By not eating enough carbs, your body will get glucose from protein and your lean muscle mass suffers
The atkins diet is neither healthy or special. It still all comes down to calories in vs,, calories out LOL... It doesn't matter how you do it,, low carb, low calorie, low whatever,, intermittent fasting,, it's all the same! The atkins diet is a low calorie diet in a nut shell. nothing more. Your body doesn't burn fat any faster on this diet than any other. Your body doesn't just get its glucose needs from carbs! but also from converting fat or protein which is abundant in this diet.
I believe I understand, why people succeed on both Atkins and Ornish, McDgl diets
Atk. uses ketosis as natural appetite control, causing reduction in cal, consumption & subs weight loss. He also uses carb reduction to control insulin, what many terrified by
Alternitively by eating whole food carbs, fiber controlls appetite by satiation (fullness). Because sugar-starch enters blood slowly, insulin effectively controlled too. Same results, least in these 2 aspects. Whole food has me for simplicity
have we really been eating less fat though? I mean have we? Why don't they give out numbers, data, %s. Without data, even the smartest cannot really think for themselves. I know for sure we've been "talking" about eating less fat. How about "walking" though? Also I know the percentage of carbs rose slightly, namely junk carbs, along with calories in general. No fat is not necessarily so terrible, but I suggest we all learn to think for ourselves. Sensationalist journalism this strikes me as
@Owltalons Actually I'm not consuming that much carbs. Probably less than most overweight omnivore! I eat MODERATELY low fat/high protein/high carbs. I do what feel right. Total calories is the most important thing, no matter the ratio if you don't have enough calories you won't feel good, people seems to forget that. That's usually why people don't feel well on a vegan diet. Or not enough food variety. Too much or too little fat is as worst as too little carbs or too much.
@Owltalons I was a low fat vegan for a while and it didn't worked for me. Well I felt great at first and I think that if you come from the SAD diet a low fat vegan diet is great but not so much for long term. Well not as low as Dr Ornish and others promote. Keep in mind their patient come from a SAD diet and are in seriously bad health. When you come from one extreme sometime you have to go to another and then you stay in between.
@Owltalons I wasn't talking about this book specifically. And no I haven't read it and I don't plan to do so. I tried the low carbs diet few years ago and it was a disaster. I didn't tried it for weight loss as I'm already fit but just to see how I'd felt.
Here's what happened I ate as much calories but mostly from fat. I had less energy and I got fatter which suprised me since I've always been prone to being skinny. I'm a triathlete and I train 15 hours a day maybe that's why it didn't worked
What many of the less intelligent critics fail to remember is that fruit is seasonal and largely unavailable for most of the year. Also, saying that Atkins is no good because when you come off it you put the weight back on is as moronic as saying that you shouldn't quit smoking because if u start again the health risks return.

People are not getting fatter because they eat more carbs... They eat more fat and carbs! Calories are what matter most. Also let's keep in mind that refined carbs are bad... carbs from whole foods are not.
@VeganPua I agree 100%. There's even a harvard study from 2009 that shows this. Even protein can make you fat if you eat too much (it's just that no one is going to eat 4k calories of lean chicken breast. The only thing containing calories that we can eat as much as we want from is fiber, because the human body doesn't digest it.That's why I'm sceptical to all diets that exclude any particular macronutrient. It's also funny how people put so much into dieting but none into working out.
@Chaaarge Telling people to exercise more is not going to sell more books. Instead tell them good things about their bad habits and you got a bestseller, tell them to eat more fat and that exercise will make them fat and they'll buy it.
I don't blame people buying those books, If I was overweight, inactive and eating crap like bacon and cheese I'd buy the book that tell me I can eat more of it and don't need to exercise!
It's amazing that this ABC clip is nearly 8 years old as of me writing this, and still the prevailing "wisdom" among today's most popular television diet gurus, like Dr. Oz or Jillian Michaels, is the reduction of fat, and emphasis on carbohydrate rich foods. It's as if people have short term memories. I think the reason why the mounting science behind restricted carbohydrates is being ignored, is because an American diet high in carbohydrate diet is more profitable for food manufacturers.
Yeah Dont Agree 100% with this video infos!! Canola oil is not a good oil!! Saturated Fats r good like butter, lard, beef fat, coconut oil, cacao oil, because they r stable even when cooked!! Flax seed oil is ok in small quantities but raw!! Never Never Cook with vegetable oils like olive or sunflower or flax!! they go rancid!!
Video is still a bit off. Whole grains are not good carbs (increases insulin a lot, makes LDL small dense and deadly, increases triglycerides), saturated fats are good fats (makes LDL fluffy and large, hard to oxidize). Bad fats are crazy vegetable oils that are relatively new, trans fats, and some fats that are healthy cool like olive oil become unhealthy and rancid if cooked.
