Bicyclists have zero moral or legal right to impede the flow of traffic on a multi lane road, as they are gleefully doing in this video. Watch as they swerve from one lane to another. Should be in the right lane. Sadly, action such as this will aggravate and cause angry confrontations.

I drive a 5000 pound Land Rover and I have this very simple rule, I will not use my vehicle to intimidate motorcyclist, bicyclist or pedestrians, no matter how much they are obstructing the flow of traffic, I just refuse to use my vehicle in such a way against others that are not protected by a steel cage. I have encountered critical mass riders in Manhattan, my reaction is to pull over and let them pass or take an alternate route.

@Epostaxis I think when people break the law, you can call them out on it and call for assistance from law enforcement. And this info will be helpful to law enforcement in effecting a prosecution of the offender for the crime, This is what a responsible citizen would do. Consider it like a kind of neighborhood watch on the streets we all share and want to keep safe for us all to use.,

Should also be treated as such by other vehicles who should signal accordingly to change lanes/turn & should take the passing lane (which should be left open by cyclists) for passing cyclists.

@Jvizzlezz people like that often get thier license to drive suspended.. and if they do it again, they are likely to permanently lose thier right to drive.. And thier cost of insurance goes up and up too.. for committing these kinds of criminal acts behind the wheel of a car. Insurance companies risk managers are very aware that these kinds of drivers are very costly to them to insure and will make them pay for that risk or refurse to insure them all together.
And for christ's sake where a bloody helmet!! I know what it feels like to leave a bunch of teeth and half your face on the road. A helmet might not have saved my teeth and chin but It would have saved 2mnths in hostpital, plastic surgery, brain damage and 2 yrs before I could work full time again. I don't agree with running people over. I don't agree with these biking demonstrations either. I think the next time there is a bike demonstration like this, a large group of people should get together and walk slowly in front of them. Hey, if we're meant to share the road with all modes of transportation, I guess I have the right to walk or roller skate or even hop down the street on a pogo stick with no regard to the cars behind me who are trying to pass, right?

Critical Mass riders are mostly group think stupid people that block up the entire road - like sheep, leaving NO room for anyone else to get past - then they piss and moan about other people who don't subscribe to their lack of respect "dumb fuck" ethics.

I done a few critical mass rides. People get quite angry about being slowed down by a bunch of cyclists. Stay in the right lane and be safe. Left lane is for passing. Critical mass is a accident waiting to happen.
I'm all for Critical Mass rides and would like to go on one sometime, but for goodness sake, they should NOT have been in both lanes of the road. There most definately are bike laws and you cannot take up every lane like that if there is room. As someone who drives more than rides, I agree with the gripes drivers have about cyclists. But it doesn't matter. Although these cyclists were arrogant hippies, nothing can justify willingly injuring them then avoiding responsibility, which this driver did. I don't know where this happened, but if it was in a concealed carry US state, someone should have shot his engine block and made him stay there so he could be held accountable. Behind a wheel, handlebar, or pair of shoes, it's wrong.

This was clearly instigated by the bikers. Also, the incident in Brazil has also been said to be initiated by biker hostility toward a car that was attempting to pass. The driver happened to be mentally ill and the result was terrible and unfortunate. However, as a NY Times article points out, these Critical Mass efforts have poor organization and very little regard for the rules of the road and safety. It is no surprise that these events occur.

@lg1886 you know that critical mass or other similar group bicycle rides in street only happen in a small window of time on Friday evenings(usually only about 2-3 hours).. And usually they only happen once a month.. chances of you coming across these rides are slim.. And if you do, you know when it happens, so just plan accordingly..Maybe take a bike on that evening instead of driving car? or ride a motorbike or scooter.. or just plan to go a bit soon than normal. consider is rush hour traffic.

@thenotoriouspie not sure what u r saying. if u r complaining about cyclists running red lights, keep in mind that many traffic lights have triggers that r enbedded in the road that are design to trigger when a car is above them and that in most cases these devices do not trigger when a bicycle is above them. This creates a road hazard for everyone, especially cyclists. most code books consider such lights broken and the cyclists has right to cross when it is red.
@upcycle I haven't really done much bike riding in an area that doesn't have a bike lane but as far as I know (or at least what my mum told me when she took me around) aren't you supposed to stop and walk your bike across at such busy intersections or at least press the button to get the pedestrian crossing sign going?

i was at Critical Mass a few years back & saw this guy (in a car) being chased by the cops. dude goes thru the wooden horses (that closed off the street to cars) straight into a kid ( around 7-8 yrs. old, w/ his family) on a bicycle. the kid flips over the car, lands on the side-walk. thank God, he had a helmet on & actually got up. the cops caught the bad guy too.
The car is crossing the median because it was on the wrong side of the road going into oncoming traffic. My favorite part of the vid is when the black lady asks "What is this for?" He answers, "A demonstration." Then she asks, "For....?" He gives no answer.
As a commuter and racer, I ride at least 2hrs a day. In my experience, respecting the drivers and being careful is the best way to avoid confrontations such as this. Critical mass rides do more to harm the cause of the cyclist, as they seem to only anger drivers that would have otherwise been passive and provoke angry drivers to only be more aggressive.
In Virginia, the law states that cyclists are to ride on the right side of the road, as close as is safe to the curb. Respect begets respect.

I think the next time there is a bike demonstration like this, a large group of people should get together and walk slowly in front of them. Hey, if we're meant to share the road with all modes of transportation, I guess I have the right to walk or roller skate or even hop down the street on a pogo stick with no regard to the cars behind me who are trying to pass, right?

Critical Mass riders are mostly group think stupid people that block up the entire road - like sheep, leaving NO room for anyone else to get past - then they piss and moan about other people who don't subscribe to their lack of respect "dumb fuck" ethics.

I done a few critical mass rides. People get quite angry about being slowed down by a bunch of cyclists. Stay in the right lane and be safe. Left lane is for passing. Critical mass is a accident waiting to happen.

As someone who drives more than rides, I agree with the gripes drivers have about cyclists. But it doesn't matter. Although these cyclists were arrogant hippies, nothing can justify willingly injuring them then avoiding responsibility, which this driver did. I don't know where this happened, but if it was in a concealed carry US state, someone should have shot his engine block and made him stay there so he could be held accountable. Behind a wheel, handlebar, or pair of shoes, it's wrong.

This was clearly instigated by the bikers. Also, the incident in Brazil has also been said to be initiated by biker hostility toward a car that was attempting to pass. The driver happened to be mentally ill and the result was terrible and unfortunate. However, as a NY Times article points out, these Critical Mass efforts have poor organization and very little regard for the rules of the road and safety. It is no surprise that these events occur.

Keep in mind, these cyclists ARE breaking the law; they dont have any right to do this as they did NOT clear it with city council, nor are they riding single file. Also if cyclists want respect of drivers, then follow the rules. Ride single file on the far right of the road, that is what is taught in school.

@lg1886 you know that critical mass or other similar group bicycle rides in street only happen in a small window of time on Friday evenings(usually only about 2-3 hours).. And usually they only happen once a month.. chances of you coming across these rides are slim.. And if you do, you know when it happens, so just plan accordingly..Maybe take a bike on that evening instead of driving car? or ride a motorbike or scooter.. or just plan to go a bit soon than normal. consider is rush hour traffic.

@thenotoriouspie not sure what u r saying. if u r complaining about cyclists running red lights, keep in mind that many traffic lights have triggers that r enbedded in the road that are design to trigger when a car is above them and that in most cases these devices do not trigger when a bicycle is above them. This creates a road hazard for everyone, especially cyclists. most code books consider such lights broken and the cyclists has right to cross when it is red.

i was at Critical Mass a few years back & saw this guy (in a car) being chased by the cops. dude goes thru the wooden horses (that closed off the street to cars) straight into a kid ( around 7-8 yrs. old, w/ his family) on a bicycle. the kid flips over the car, lands on the side-walk. thank God, he had a helmet on & actually got up. the cops caught the bad guy too.

As a commuter and racer, I ride at least 2hrs a day. In my experience, respecting the drivers and being careful is the best way to avoid confrontations such as this. Critical mass rides do more to harm the cause of the cyclist, as they seem to only anger drivers that would have otherwise been passive and provoke angry drivers to only be more aggressive.
In Virginia, the law states that cyclists are to ride on the right side of the road, as close as is safe to the curb. Respect begets respect.
