I've just realised that this song doesn't necessarily depict any kind of nuclear disaster or catastrophe as implied.

I think the "wild wind" is about human panic and fear conjured up by the media, which leans them ultimately to kill themselves on a large scale.

When The Final Frontier was released, I didn't particular like it.... Now, 2 years on it is one of my favourite albums, second only to Brave New World. The reason? Coming Home, When the Wild Wind Blows, Mother of Mercy, and seeing Maiden live in Cardiff, back in August.

At 4:43, a standard entry, then at 5:04 it shifts (as only IM does it) to a new level of intensity--like a man going from thought to thought, getting more frightened. At 5:23 it become chaos--like all his thoughts are happening at once--until 6:03 when he starts to make the decision and then at 6:43 he acts. It mirrors the lyrics. It's stunning. It picks up at 8:40 and carries us in to the end--the sweet tragedy. It's like classical music. UTI!

Then again, that entire album is awesome, easily one of my all-time favorite Maiden albums. "The Pilgrim" is a good one to. "A Thousand Suns" is a great one too, it's just that the line, "E=MC2 You can relate" is kind of idiotic.
