I've been thinking about this for days, about how Switzerland might be a nice place to live, with their politics straight and far more liberty-oriented than most of Europe. But Bill O just gave me all the reasons I hadn't heard before why Switzerland isn't actually all that free, even though he glowingly endorsed them.

I would like to agree with O'Reilly, but he seems to forget that he's Irish. Ireland used to be one of the poorest countries in Europe. It bothers me that O'Reilly EMPHASIZED that it takes 12 years to become a Swiss citizen or maybe even get rejected after waiting for that long.

Switzerland is a nice place and there's a whole lotta going on there if one steps out of the tourist places. I've been to Basel during the february carneval and it was great. Btw. the only other tourists we saw on that trip were in the mirror.

Actually the WIR bank and the protection of small and medium businesses has led to Switzerland having the highest quality of life in Europe, not the half truths O'liely is saying. The government mandates and regulates many of the benefits workers enjoy there, like in the rest of Western Europe, and as much as I love Switzerland and think we should learn from them, forking over many of their systems wouldn't work. I still am for forking over WIR and Direct Democracy though :p

i appreciate the nice things he said (i'm not swiss but i was born and raised here) but he got his facts wrong, as usual.
he might have had a lower opinion if he had ventured out of the touristy parts of the country and realised that there are many "far left" (as he seems to call anybody left of the republican party) people here, that cannabis is consumed in public in many places and that the health and welfare system he praises so much is far more "socialist" than he tried to portray it.

Bill O'Rielly is a biased dumb-ass but his report about switzerland is pretty good even though it's inaccuracies Obviously I'm from Switzerland and pretty much the only thing that bothers me are the banks. HIs two big inaccuracies are that there are only 7.5 not 12.5 million people living there and that they boot you right out when you get in which isn't really true.

Well I live in Switzerland and most of which Mr O'Reilly said isn't too far from the truth (I sincerly was surprised), BUT Billo the Clown forgot one little detail: The swiss wealth is based on foreign money a lot of which comes from wars, drugs, sinister dictators or was just illegally brought in the country in order to avoid taxes. Many of the European neigbourgs are quite pissed, because rich asholes rather ship their money to switzerland than contribute to society by paying their taxes.

And by the way, Switzerland's state isn't dependable from the Swiss Bank Secret as it was some decades ago. We got huge companies which export a hell of a lot of stuff, their incomes then get taxed, that's where all the money is coming from, banks such as UBS and CS rather distribute their money to their own employees (going to be regulated), so a little rest of the incomes is tax-money. And finaly the continuity (political&economical) makes it attractive to invest and save money here...

That is not the reason why switzerland works. The importance of the bank secret for switzerland's economy is definetly overrated and there are many clichees about it. Switzerland does work because of her direct democracy, free employment market, good social services, export companies who can sell their products etc.
