bloody hell this brings a tear to my eye. Havent heard this for ages. I can remember vividly singing along with my copy of Smash Hits in 1978 so and still know all the words! Thanks for posting!
I spelled Siouxsie's name as "Siuxsie" earlier. Oh no. And for people who say that kids no nothing, THAT's NOT TRUE! I am barely 13 and I strongly oppose the ignorance of youth but I embrace the few who actually LISTEN to lyrics. I hope those voices will be found in these times.
Kids these days have no clue about anti establishment anthems or the conditions the Bromley Contingent grew up in. Turn off the Disney Channel and watch what S&TB has to sing about. Don't agree with her? nobody asked you to.
Huzzah for music! And toilets! This band changed so much over the years. From this to Stargazer, such a big difference. I still love all the albums they put out! Siuxsie and Steven are quite AWESOME at writing lyrics, too.
Jid1988, look you are young. Listen to the lyrics it's nothing to do with hong kong, it's talking about hong kong garden takeaway. Hence the reference to chicken chow mein. Not to mention the song is nearly 30 years old. And not to mention you're what 21?
You must be young and overly sensitive. Kids today are so freakin protected and have no backbone. Its really not ur fault. Stick to disney radio; it's not so "perplexing." I hope i didnt offend you oh racially mature person of color. Who cares what color u r... how immature to even make a point of it. Get over it. Still cool that u like the music but c'mon it's from a WAY different time. Sounds like u have some maturing to do urself... From a person who lacks color- see, who cares???
Siouxsie: "I'll never forget, there was a Chinese restaurant in Chislehurst called 'The Hong Kong Garden'. Me and my friend were really upset that we used to go there and like, occasionally when the skinheads would turn up it would really turn really ugly. These gits were just go in en masse and just terrorize these Chinese people who were working there. We'd try and say Leave them alone, you know. It was a kind of tribute."
D1ssonanc3, I wouldn't trust Wikipedia. I didn't say she was racist or anything of the sort. But just because she feels pity for a certain group doesn't mean she's not capable of portraying them negatively. "If i was from hong kong would this make me feel good or annoyed?"
But hey race is a social construct anyway. This is youtube. People want to listen. And most people would probably find my comment to be liberal bullshit, overly sensitive, or pointless.
And what exactly about the lyrics is inaccurate? Sure, stereotypes may make you (and many others) uncomfortable, but they almost always are derived from a factual observation about a group of people. This is not to say "judge a book by its cover", but don't automatically reject an idea because it makes you uncomfortable. Also, if you're just now hearing of Siouxie and the Banshees, you must be pretty young, and to be blunt just wouldn't understand the attitudes and politics of early punk-rock.
Good stuff EG, also this was about a take away, so if we eat in an ethnic restaurant we are reinforcing stereotypes and racism. Yes I am sure of that. I never thought the generation that I belonged to would ever believe things would go backwards. So far backwards. I even agree with Bruce F. up to a point. Old bastard, oops, there I go again.
Wait, what? I certainly don't agree that eating in an ethnic restaurant reinforces stereotypes or racism....how do you explain that one? And I know there is a verse about take-out food, but that's not what the song is about. I think we might be missing each others points.
Further to your reply, I believe the point you missed is irony and wit, all be it at such a low level that prententiousness could not steep to such depths. Go Away White. I believe this communiction is closed.
actually, Sid was their first drummer, Marco Pirroni of Adam and the Ants first guitarist and then the only original, full-time, members all the way until their demise- Sioux and Steve(bassist).
over rated? in 1978? You really need to get some perspective, kemicon. No one was listening to this in 1978. They rarely charted outside of Britain and were only much later acknowledged for their musical abilities. I've been listening to them since '78 and trust me, they were consistently under rated and ignored. For 1978, this was beyond HOT!

I agree actually. I think the Banshees were a bit over rated but when they were on point, they were totally on point. This song is a good example, as is Christine and heck even Cities in Dust.
i love it too. I just realized it's sort of a martial arts (ala Hong KOng) influenced thing with all the kicking but also very 80's in that skanking sort of way. Siouxsie is really cute in this one.
you mean the song released by Iggy Pop or the re-hashed version by Bowie? If you mean the Bowie version - this was out five years before that. Interesting that you lump the two together because of the 'asian theme'.
Oldschool punkrocker here... this is what all us 'hardcore punx' got tortured with by our girlfriends with in the 80s. i too saw marie Antoinette. when i heard this song i loooved it and had to find out who siouxsie and the banshees were.
it's just now im realizing how stereotypical these lyrics are towards hong kong and its inhabitants.
i mean even her band name is a play on the Native American Sioux nation.
as a person of color, im perplexed about how i should feel.
im not calling her racist AT ALL. i'm just saying she's racially immature.... O_o

Lol whoa.
i'm young but probably older than you think.
From having a white mother, working, volunteering, and traveling around the world I'd say yes I am sensitive to how other people are represented.
I loved this song at one point. As i was when i read Rolling Stone's Brown Sugar. Take a moment to read them.
Many popular songs are enjoyable but sometimes the lyrics are questionable.
I raised a question, made an observation. And because of that I have no backbone? Nope
