the spoonful bootleg from the detroit grande ballroom to me is the greatest, it has an intensity that is ridiculous and the note choice is superb. this one still kicks ass
I realize I'm chiming in a bit late on the Hendrix vs. Clapton debate, but felt compelled to put in my two cents worth. "The best" is who each person thinks is "the best" and really translates to "my favorite". Clapton's work on "Crossroads" is my favorite (live) guitar performance ever. On the other hand, I like Leslie West's playing in general more than anyone else's; but I would never go around saying either Clapton or West was "the best".
If there's anything you can get from being a certain race (doubt it) then I would think Jimi got a lot of his spiritual feeling in his music from his native American heritage.

Great performance from the rhythm section of Cream (Bruce and Baker). One of the most INTENSE Cream performances!! Both Jack and Ginger are pushing it pedal to the metal here......leaving Eric in the dust in my opinion....
LOL every time Cream of Jimi get mentioned it re-ignites the whole Hendrix vs Clapton thing. And that's good! Nothing wrong with a bit of honest debate. Eric just edges it for me - mostly on the basis of this song! IMO the live versions of Spoonful are just about musical perfection, a jam that has never, NEVER, been equalled. On the subject of Hendrix/Cream, here's one for ya: How about Mitch Mitchell vs Ginger Baker?
Jesus I've been looking for another version that can compare with the monster that is on Wheels of Fire. Apparently TV and Radio Stations all over America and Europe have recordings which they won't give out.
Still no one can compare with these guys for jamming on the hoof and being free.
I think the best guitarist is, bla bla blaaaaaaa.- I mean who really cares. IMO guitarist from 60/70 like Clapton,Hendrix,Jeff Beck,Peter Green,Jimmi Page; Johnny Winter, Michael Bloomfield, Santana, Duanne Allmann etc.... Wrote the first chapter of modern guitarists.
I'm not saying that white men can't feel or ape an art rooted in African-American culture. I'm just saying, Clapton is not better than Hendrix, as a physical player or as an icon in electric guitar history. He managed to outlive Hendrix and his parts are easier to learn, understand and sell.
u are a fucking moron! claptons profeciency as a guitarist made jimi's live playing sound so sloppy and at times unlistenable...take Isle of Wight for instance. name one cream concert where eric sounds that bad??
I'm a moron for recognizing greater genius? Granted, Clapton played it safer and yeah, Hendrix burned out his style in the final performances before he died. Time was, Clapton was considered a sell out amongst guitarists and fans after leaving Cream so he could hang out with Delaney Bramlet, steel his persona after stealing his best friend, George Harison's wife. Talk about integrity, he didn't have much to fear from the frail, ex Beatle. But go ahead, champion your white guy,..punk ass!!
Sorry man, it's just wierd for me sometimes. I'm a big fan of Jimi's and shouldn't get so defensive. Gotta say though this dude is sounding pretty damn good now that I listen to him!
Clapton better than Hendrix?? How so? I mean, yeah, the guy(EC) was a blues afficianado but we're talking about a bunch of Brits playing cowboys and Indians.
Jimi came up from the actual blues cirquit, and besides being a blues afficianado himself, was actually black, not just emulating it, so c'mon!
How can you say that white people cant play blues? Think about what you are saying. Blues comes from the heart not the colour of your skin or your background.
to play the blues you have to have passion simple as that... as for hendrix vs clapton the two were pretty dissimilar... clapton did not stray too far from the blues whereas hendrix is known for his rock experimentation
@owensp001 With clapton it's pretty obvious to me that to play the Blues you only need to PLAY with passion, Blues don't care if if the player cares or not. Also, his experimentation was constant but he just didn't break that barrier like Jimi did. Jimi's blues are typically misunderstood by more conservative ears, thank you.
If you believe that Eric Clapton is better than Jimi Hendrix, then you don't fully understand the artistry of Eric Clapton.
