I had a save right next to this puzzle, and I tried it out myself. Any attack seems to have results. A roll usually lands you into water, where the pull throws you around (sometimes to directions opposite to you are turning). Saving during this momentum doesn't seem to make it carry over.
How did I notice it? Well, since there are two R1's and the amulet glow thing all within close proximity of each other, I started to wonder that if I did different combinations very quickly, would I get any interesting results, resulting in me being flung about like crazy! I had a look at it in slo mo, and it almost looks like the grapple sucks Kratos into it and then spits him about...and ideas as to whats going on here?

Its a pretty fun glitch to muck around with!

Now that I think of it, I've seen this effect occur during swimmingness as well.
