Hi there, cool channel. If you are looking for quality Windows, OSX and Ubuntu video tutorials with tips, tweaks and hacks, check out my channel. I also have some iPhone/iTouch tips on my blog
It's only thin because everything(standard) that would make a laptop thicker has been removed. That isn't unique or original. Thats apple marketing for all you sheep morons.
I guess it's the notebook for people who want unquestionable portability...
That's not such a good pull for me, though. I want functionality, and I want usefulness. I want my machine to have meaning to it's use. I don't care that it can't go everywhere with me, because I don't always need it.
And I definitely don't need a gimped laptop, no matter HOW portable it is.
The only market this thing has is it's total, complete, and unquestionable portability.
they finally made it!!! my ultra mobile mac!!!!! I SO NEED ONE OF THOSE FOR CAMPUS!!!! ugh. i already have a desktop at home and this will be the perfect companion!
to tell the truth the only reason people will get a macbook air is because it is thin and maybe the keyboard is coooler and what not. other than that it dosent have a dvd/cd drive and it only has i think 1 usb port. so for my opinion i am going to say that this is probably the macbooks bigger brother but the macbook pro is like the biggest brother
I don't think the thickness of the macbook Air makes up for the fact that is has a shitty processor, no disc drive, only one USB port, and only an 80GB hard drive. It also goes without saying that it's overpriced, just like everything else Apple sells.
i totally agree with u man...i love apple i plan to get a mac for college and the macbook air will not be one...the size makes up for what it doesn't have which is a lot......"score macbook air, upgrade or downgrade?" DOWNGRADE!!!!!!!
Thing is though, to make it work, you have to buy the "optional extra" dvd drive for £65, just to load the install/restore dvd, With the Mac Air it would be great if you could download programs via the net and activate it in the same way as the Iphone. The Mac Air will be great if & when Apple make entire major programs downloadable. But until then to have a laptop without a dvd at this time is not a good idea. Give it 5yrs Steve
Investigate further before stating things you don't know anything about. You can easily use the install/restore DVD via Remote Disk - can even reinstall from scratch this way
I am well aware of Remote Disk. The point I am making is that if I am paying £1200 for a laptop, I don't want to either have to pay extra for a drive or have it assumed I own a second machine if I want to load anything.
Thing is though, you HAVE to buy the "optional extra" dvd drive for £65 to be able to load the install/restore dvd in the first place(ie to make it work). I think the Mac Air would be good when you can download complete install/restore programs and other programs direct from Apple. That isn't today though!!
£1200 for a lap top and no dvd drive!!! - in 5 or 10 years time maybe when the disc goes the way of the dodo but not now. Come on Apple, i like your stuff but please!!
well, really? what would you use it for? all the music you have you download. movies are pretty much all downloaded now. companys are starting to sell cds and dvds in flash drive form now, or you download from a official website.
i sort of agree with you, because right now people still have dvds, but when this comes out they will probly start to have phased dvds out.
I don't download music but i know that many do, and movies are far from pretty much all downloaded, and many people still BUY their dvds at a store. So they can hold it and use it for multiple places. There is also the library, and you don't download things from there.
And just to be condescending, there should be no comma before the word "because".
if you look on the apple website you can use a normal mac and use wirless cd's. you put the cd in the mac and it wirelessly transfers to your macbook air.
you can buy an external drive anyway, so it really is no problem, this is a laptop designed for work and with limited space, an ultra portable mac, if you want a built in drive there is already the macbook so there really is no problem
They laughed when Apple began shipping computers with no floppy disk drives. Now try to find a PC with a floppy. Where Apple goes, the PC world follows.
Well, you actually need to have a reasonable substitute if you're going to take things out. In this case apple is calling their paid online services a reasonable substitute, they are definitely not!
I'll keep my CDs, DVDs and freedom of choice. Don't forget the RIAA is going to/already made Ripping music illegal for Americans. Even if you wanted to go through the trouble of ripping your CDs to put on your cd/dvd lacking computer -- it's illegal. You can't even access music internationally without an international credit card. Oh, and think about hardware drivers and software installation.
the target audience for this is someone who already has a mac/pc an just wants a small laptop for work, not entertainment, which is why they use remote disk which allows you to install software from a disk inside another computer wirelessly
As for their internet backup service... You should have that information stored with you so you have it when you need it, that way it's in your control at all times. I've owned and rented 5 different servers.. you're better off backing up your files in gmail for free. I wonder what happens when your "free introductory subscription" runs out..
The CD/DVD may be outdated by new mass storage mediums like Blueray etc. But it's not going to be replaced with the iTunes store. Don't expect the PC market to follow by stripping down features that make a computer fully functional, just to make it a little thinner.
If Airbook sells well there will be imitators. The iPhone already has imitators. Personally, I've always thought conventional laptops were too thick and heavy. I've always wanted something about the size and weight of a legal pad. I don't know if Airbook is that light, but it's getting closer to what I want.
If you think just because it's thin, it's portable -- think again --, don't even consider taking this to work or traveling without carying a CD DRIVE(!!) and USB hub. In fact, if you want to use your laptop for functions other then kissing Mac's apple-y sunshine, this isn't the laptop for you. Apple is just hocking itunes and their worthless internet backup service, as always. What's the point?
It's not supposed to be fast or have a ton of power... it's an ultra-portable and PERFECT for 50% + of people who use notebooks. Specs will improve over time as technology improves but this is a beautiful step in the right direction.
personally, its too expensive though for the price... 1800 for a a really thin macbook... is it worth it? You could get a black macbook for cheaper, and it has better specs...

its basically a super expensive ipod touch with a bigger screen. no CD drive, no ethernet.. too soon to consider those 'useless'

exactly, its nothing more than the ultimate glorified pda. and even then id prefer to have that in my pocket anyway...

Look this Airbook has no market.
Its not for power use nor travelers.
1-It isnt sturdy -would never trust a traveling business user with 1.
2- no ethernet port, cant connect to business network when you get there. Most businesses use a different wifi DSL not connected for visitors.
3. No swappable battery when traveling longer then 3-4 hours.
4- lacks media outlets for presentations.
This, is a stupid product that's 4 years old (Sony x505)
