LOL.. I remember this well and funny enough it actually stuck with me all these years so although it seems dated, it is a memorable tune.. I sing it to the kids to teach them how to cross safely.
I knew this as a toddler, amazing to watch it again. Funny seeing the road with no markings. I guess we'll soon be returning to that level of cutbacks, lol.
Thanx for posting, dinadangdong. Very nostalgic. :o)
Love that they had to find a quiet country road to film the car driving 'past'. No budget...ok, let's swop our urban to rural in the flash of an eye. No one will notice :-)
#4 "let all the traffic past you" often doesn't work while crossing at intersections with no traffic light during rush hour, even if there is a crosswalk.
You just have to find a gap that's long enough and dash through, and all the aggressive drivers during rush hour definitely don't help.
The young boy crossing the road is the now Fianna Fail Dublin T.D. Chris Andrews with his sister Niamh . . . Not to mention Brendan Grace's catchy vocals
rte were putting out ads trying to keep kids safe on the roads, while at the same time kow towing to the very institution that was beating them and raping them without mercy. strange

I remember growing up in Rural Ireland in the 70's and used to lve the SCC. I remember having to do a SCC test in National School and the SCC blue badge with Judge from Wanderly Wagon arrived about 3 weeks later. Brilliant memories.
Does anyone remember the other Public Safety Ads from the time, the barrell of water on the farm with the kids legs sticking up from it, love all the really crass ads from the time, so funny now. Thanks for posting.
This was a great compaign only troulble was,It took me for ever to get anywhere because I remember standing at the side of the deserted road (It was the 70s!)singing the song to myself before would cross . Fond memories.
Tell me about it. Growing up in a rural village there was still a horse and cart bringing churns to the creamery. Living in California now my wife thinks I've lost it, just made her watch the national anthem closedown from 1980's RTE and now a spirited rendition of the safe cross code. Greta memories, god bless you for uploading this.
From out of nowhere I found myself singing this song this morning when I was getting ready for work. And I remembered every word. Why this song came into my head I will never know.
Anyways a quick youtube search and there is the advert in all its glory. So many great memories.
for some reason i remember this as going into a sax solo at the end. is there a version that does? I have it really clear in my head. It goes "dooh dooh dooh dooh dooh dooh dooh dooh dooh". deadly it was. maybe i imagined it.
this song is the dogs. only saw it when visiting relatives during 70's before we got rte. green cross code that we got in the north was dire! singers voice reminds me a wee bit of vincent price for some reason!
Oh my God, this ad has given me a case of nostalgic flashback to having a jam sandwich in front of the coal fire after finishing primary school on a winter's day. The telly would be on with ads like this and to this day the words were all still in my memory! Cool...
jeesus i remember this i was about 10yo if memory serves me correctely this was the late 70s i remember being dressed the same as those kids in the video.
Does anyone know the names of the kids. i think i recognise the girl cos that crossing is out side our ladys grove in clonskeagh dublin and i went to school there with a girl who lived in one of those houses who acted, was it her ? ps still remember all the words too
The stop motion car used to freak me out as a kid and remember questioning my mother as to the point of the safe cross code when cars kept disappearing on the road, lol.
you probably already know, but 5 people were involved in writing this song, 4 of them died in traffic accidents before it was finished and the man who finally finished it... ah I cant be bothered, Im going to bed
brill ad!! i can still remember the entire song..... they should use this song and make a new advert today to get children to be safe on the roads.....
I agree. I'm sure kids today would love the song as much as we did, and they would learn something as well. I always loved it when this was shown on Bosco!
My claim to fame as a kid was that my Dad is the bloke in the car going slo-mo down the hill! For some random reason he knew the people making the ad and got roped in. Still think it's a very catchy tune though ....
Oh God, my earliest memory of this is from around 1975. I remember safe cross code badges, and booklets with Judge from Wanderly Wagon on them. Great to see it again.
Ha ha. My kids think this is hilarious and now know it from start to finish after listening to it a few times. Thanks for taking me back to my school days back home. Even Wanderly Wagon brought a tear to my eyes when I heard the theme music!
The full ad, with Judge, Mr. Crow and Foxy was great. I'd love to see the whole thing. The very first shot of the live action in the middle, with the lollipop man, was filmed in Kilmacud, near where I live. Some of the other parts are near Our Lady's Grove, Goatstown.
Injupitably, my canine friend, injupitably. Never cross on a bend in the road, or on a hill. Going to school, remember to hold on to your football or marbles till you get there!
Did you know that at 3 it used to say " 3 look all around you" before they changed it to " look all around and listen"? They changed the song a few weeks later. I kid you not.
..... you mean for "hoose", "mange worm" and "scour". Ah I remember them well. Always seemed to be broadcast during dinner hour! (or was it during the GAA championship when every farmer in the country was glued to his set)
