If you're talking about "bailing up" to the basement, you're absolutely right. You won't fit through the basement window wearing your air pack, but who would ever try that? The technique is to remove your air pack, reach up, and set it outside the wind, NEVER TAKING YOUR HAND OFF IT! Then you haul yourself up there and follow the air pack out the window. You hang on to the air pack so you can still breathe through the mask if the environment is smoke-filled.
