My dad was actually one of the pilots that conducted the first 2-man sea extraction. Picked up a CCT (who actually passed away today) and a Navy SEAL.
Now that's more like it, Mr. Wayne. The CIA had a program back in the 60s for getting their people out of hotspots called Skyhook. We could look into that.
@Greener262 Fair enough. For some reason I want to think Skyhook is safer but I know its about as safe as being lifted into the air at intense speeds by an airplane with the risk of your harness failing... Dammit.
Hell, I worked that tail (64-14859) in England. This plane started out as a HC-130N and then got transformed into a EC-130H, back in the day. Now it is a "slick" doing its duty still after all these years!
@datzfast the fulton recovery system was used to recover either people or machine )more than one balloon was used) and the military still uses it and also it was sued in the 1950's through today i think my memory don't serve me ell and im only 14 and i know a lot about the military
We did 52 pickups at Edwards Air force base; it was called "Project 46". Because I was a contractor, I was allowed to have a video camera and was able to video tape some of these pickups. Robert Fulton Jr was the inventor and others that were used by the US military. His grandfather was Robert Fulton senior the inventor of the steam boat. Jr was about 80 at the time we were conducting these test and was actively involved, he was a very nice man.
I was the contract logistic support for Lockheed Ontario, CA during the late 80's early 90's when we were doing load increase test at Edward Air force base. We increased the pickup load to 1250lbs. This was to simulate 4 people. We did have a full size crash dummy named "Rugged Ron" that had an EDR in his chest to measure acceleration in 3 axis. The max load experienced at lift off was 9g's, but it was only for a few seconds otherwise you would pass out.
I noticed trapdoorsniper's comment suggesting that this system feels similar to the opening shock on a parachute. By the looks of the video that seems to be the case. Plus I would guess that for the pick up the Herc would be flying as slow as possible like for a jump. Do you happen to know off hand how many G's a static line Chute wil generate on a jumper?
did see it actually during an airshow..herc snapped the cord of the small balloon and...
.the one pulled up bounced back to earth 3 times before lifted up in the air!if it was'nt a dummy i think all bones in the body were smashed to pieces in the accident.
that is so awesome, i was watching batman and saw a "similar" version [I know its a movie" but I wondered if indeed you could really do it!! So very cool, that looks fun, hehe
we dont really use this system anymore. i'm a load on 130s and i've never seen the system. you can see it in action in the black knight movie. its pretty sweet
Its also in the John Wayne movie "Green Berets." Originally meant to recover pilots who were downed beyond the range of rescue helicopters, the crazies (specops) also had an interest in the system, particularly when it was still new. US Air Force Special Operations Command (AFSOC) used to have these in their inventory but got rid of it in the late 90's. As legend has it, there was a bit of safety paranoia after a fatal accident occured during a training excercise.
where i come from this is how we get to work, i even got a plain pass and everything. authough if your in a hurry its not a good idear to stand wating eating your food. thats a mistake I wont make again. and it the same with busses, you wait and wait and then 2 come at once. nevermind you cant have it all :-P
paragonparadox, you are right, if I ever get a divorce, this is how I am breaking the news!, just stand in the yard at night, call to her, and when she comes out, she´ll see me standing there, white hat and whive overcoat (so she can´t see the harnes) and I'll say "frankly dear i don't give a dam" and PUFFFF!!!!! up I go :D
The shock from a Fulton Recovery is about the same as the opening of a chute. This has a little more kick to it, but not all that much. The cable will pull you up, then start to straighten out. I never really got to see it happen with my back turned, but I figured it out on a fishing trip. Whenever I used a lure, I saw my line curve as the lure fell, and it pulled more line to the spot right above. As I reeled it in, the line curved, the lure would follow the curve all the way back up.
It looks like the fast g-force of that degree would at least cause a person to pass out. I'm sure some people would suffer injuries. Gotta restrict that to well trained and very physically fit people.
That looks so damn scary; I don't know what's worse, being hung from a huge airplane or being the one in the airplane having to feed that line. Either way, my heart goes out to these men/women who put their lives at risk for our country
How did the people get themselves strapped? I mean the hercules is going too fast isn't it? What if the line started pulling right during when they were strapping? It would suck.
yes, a helium filled balloon is used to hoist up the nylon line. perhaps they didn't show it in the video clip. maybe they want to emphasize more on the personnel being extracted.
Whether it is jumping out of a good bird or into one, well I will leave that to you boy's who have balls but no brains. I have a cockpit for me Ha. You all that jump are alright though because when shit hits the fan you all jump likes it a holiday and I well, you can guess.
i remember to have seen such a thingie at an english airshow, some years ago, where the PICKUP bounced twice hard to the runway before lifted into the sky.(dummy or real idiot ?)
in 1967 at the Melsbroek a.f.b. airshow i filmed it when a real "volunteer" (??) was lifted with a red smoke cannister on his leg succesfull
