Mildred Bailey sang the version copyrighted by a Black vaudeville duo Virginia Liston and her husband Sam Gray. Virginia recorded the song in 1923 and many of the top Blues singers (all women) made cover versions in 1924. It became a standard blues for recording artists and folk performers -- with the same chorus and broadly the same tune but with different verses. It may well have existed as a folk blues before 1923.
im an 18 year old mandoline player.. i am completely consumed with grass/old timey blues. i try to show a bunch of my pals this magic of FB. none of them understand what it actually is.. or what it takes from your soul when you put all 100% into the song your playing. i wish people could feel my insides when i play or listen to this powerful genre
@Gageisrasta Because they're all too busy listening to music of Disney's "pop stars", and I'm not a old and grumpy man. i'm Actually 18 year-old and i don't understand what happened to the good old music of once.
Leadbelly is the origional singer of the song, or at least the first published. It was written for a radio show i believe, I could be wrong.

Just great guitar and early rock-music playing.
Thanks to Doc and Doc's fingerpicking and flatpicking
music area.

@TravelerKM Huddie William Ledbetter better known as Lead Belly as far as I know. Was just watching Hugh Laurie doing a great cover of this song.
