Had some fun with my college buddies doing this is west virginia, a boat in front of us actually got slit open from a sharp rock that it rubbed against. one of the roughest rivers in america
@MeredithOD indeed, almoast died doing this in aoustria :/ fell in to the river and culdnt get up so the leader jumped in after me and the whole boat flipped around so al of us fell in... prty scary, thought my life was over at that moment!
@csPJLadd I almost died too!! As if the rapids, the fear of hitting your head and/or drowning wasn't enough danger--did you know there's often times SNAKES in the water???!!! Too many dangers for me......
@csPJLadd ME TOO! i went and i fell off and went under and couldnt get up. the leader couldnt find me and didnt go in. i crashed into a rock and got SOME air. and back under again. then i crashed into a boulder and my raft hit me!!!!!!!!! in the end i got back on
@coolman2693 I don't get how that comment helps? Paddling for direction, not speed. Face the wrong way, and you are stuck at the bottom of a 5+ rapid... dang.
@coolman2693 In some cases it really doesn't help. But in most it helps avoid some rocks if you paddle enough and if everyone is actually paddling together
Fabulous. Rafting is the best in the world, relaxation, total adrenaline and the majesty of nature. I invite you to practice in my country Ecuador in the best river in the world, Rio Quijos, El Chaco, Ecuador
No JOKE!!!. This river can and will kill you if your not paying attention. What a ride. We wer the only crew that did not over turn. Thanks to Brad B it was the best time of our lives. If your not scared, you soon will be, but that's what it's all about.
I love the Gauley River! We go almost every other weekend, may through october, and EVERY weekend during Gauley season! Its a 3.5 hr drive one way but well worth it! My friend is even building a house on the gorge up there because we go so often! The Gauley was the FIRST time I had ever rafted and it was the BEST! not quit as scary as it looks but can be very dangerous. we ALWAYS go with CLASS VI......Look them up if your planning a trip!
This video is improperly named. Not to be saying anything about the Gauley (it is a badass stretch of water) but the name "Beast of the East" is one of the old nicknames for the Cheat River. Just ask any of the old timers they will tell you what is up. It just doesn't seem right to call the Gauley the Beast of the East.
@christiandeerslayer is is safe for beginners? and for someone who doesn't know how to swim? will we ever have a chance of being thrown off? looks fun but i'm scared of accidents? will crashing into a rock occur? i know my questions r silly but i rather be safe.
@diamondsontherock NO. If you don't know how to swim, you have absolutely NO business on a river of any kind, let alone this one. You have an excellent chance of being tossed right out of the boat, and a fair chance of hitting a rock. Oh, and the rapids will also vacuum you under the water, for several seconds at a time... hopefully you don't get stuck in an undercut. Not trying to scare you, but this shit is serious business. Start smaller after you learn how to swim.
i went with ace and thought they were great while i saw another rafting company send out a person in an ambulance....and i have done the lower yough in PA GAULEY MUCH BETTER
i love ACE, they are good people who really care about their guests... they are a big company, but they have worked their butts off to get there. besides, we are talking about a river here guys... not disney world. of course lives will be lost over the years
ive rafted the gauley twice in the past 3 weeks. awesome time!! but just want to recommend not using ace whitewater, there company is responcible for 66% of gauley river deaths, and more injurues than any other company. songer whitewater is the way to go. sick vid!!
Songer is owned by ACE. And two out of the three deaths this year were cardiac arrests after going in the water. the previous deaths in 2007, 2008 were at Iron Ring during low water, which ACE did not recommend we take (and we didn't, a few did though). I've floated with both ACE and Rivermen and they are both good outfitters. Just got back two weeks ago from a Fall Gauley trip.
Actually, they are a great company! i have been rafting with them many times. the only reason their death toll would be higher, is because they take at least 3 times the amount of people down as any other company. its a river.. not a them park
The Gauley is definately insane. Anyone can do these with a whitewater company. I grew up in the area. I've seen 12 year olds doing it on private boats.
I should say that I did the Ottawa River once on the Ontario/Quebec border but it wasn't too bad, really. The company I was with was very safe/professional. I'm just wondering if I am experienced enough to handle the crazy WV rivers?
I did the lower Gauley with no substantial whitewater experience. It was an intense adrenaline rush but I did fine. Our guide told us precisely what to do before and during each rapid. I'm going back this year to do the Gauley in its entirety.
i went rafting today and one person in my raft said that the upper gauley was really insane the lower gauley wasnt as bad but it was still a really fun ride and i am thinking about going in the fall
one ttime one the ocoee river i was riding hood ornament on our raft right i think the rapid mita been right left right but any way ther wuz a rapid in it wtht was shaped lika half pipe well i make it down the front of it ok and on my way up ijust get walled by a huge gulp of wite water so hard it knocks me of da raft it was crazy
what class rapids are these shown in the video. Im thinking about going white water rafting and am trying to decide what grade to go on. Im thinking 3.
I rafted it and my guide said I was crazy because i wanted to do it in a canoe... I am a OC1 white water canoeist. I even talked about j-stroke. Unheard of to our guide. He told me I would be splinters at the bottom of a drop. Hmmm guess 3 rivers aint never heard of whitesell canoes... Nuff said. I did it in a raft and it was easy stuff. I like technical water in a canoe with bags. I would have jumped at that than sat for boring row right, row left, etc etc etc... But I was the bad guytotheguide
your guide was probably right... and if you think the gauley was boring try swimming it... cus that's probably what you would end up doing if you canoed it. Do you know the lines on upper gauley? I doubt it and being in anything other than a raft on the gauley without knowing the lines is just stupid
Once again another person who does'nt know anything about white water canoeing. I've done the grand canyon. And I paddled water that was bigger and far more technical. Much of the canyon is non-stop class 3 and 4 rapids.
You are probably crazy, but thats cool. I would not have been a guide on this and the New River for the past nine years if I didnt like the thrill. We get people like you all the time who think they know it all. We answer your stupid questions with stupid answers.Your guide knows what J stroking is. Next time just enjoy the moment and dont try to compare everything.
I am not crazy friend. And I am not a know it all. The 2 times in life I have come closest to dieing were with a paddle just lost out of my hand. 1st a strainer, and 2nd hypothermia(thank god for road flares)
I started when I was 12 in Az on the Verde river. My brother who taught me.Jim Slingluff wrote the Verde river recreation guide. And was on Team Grand Canyon years ago.
So thanks for being realistic. I was. I just felt strange in a different craft. And following non-canoe lines. Peace.
I do owe you an appology for sounding rude. Everyone who has been on any river recreationally has had their close calls, whether it be themselves or seeing other people hurt or even worse. I have respect for people who do whitewater in opened face canoes. Thats one thing I would love to do. I have seen them on the Upper G. I to started young, guiding commercially when I was 16. If a guide tells you he doesnt know what a J stroke is hes blowing smoke up your ass. Hes lying if his lips are moving.
True to that. Man the canoe is awesome. Old town used to make a really good craft right there near you. We called her the nasty little bitch. They called it the otter.
Lots of rocker. So you could really manage it through a rock garden. Dagger makes a good oc1 as well. Both are a bitch on anything flat. Or if you catch a head wind.
When I was 15 I was taught how to roll a canoe with airbags. For those not in the know about OC1's and even some OC2's it trips them out. (cont)
Now int he white water canoe community we have a joke. How do you know when a white water canoeist gets old? Answer he becomes a Kyaker. And folk that roll on air mattresses(rafts) are called hood ornaments.
I am a very small sect of the white water community.
What I really love about the OC1 is the gear I can carry. I have been on a 4 week river trip. No resupply. You can carry a lot of gear in a canoe. And if you are smart about it. Go for a long time without seeing a person.
Hmmm, I remember running the Gauley in 1978 in a 16' Mad River Explorer. No air bags, or saddle, just an old styrofoam block in the middle to float the boat if it turned over. What a blast that was. But then I ran the Russell Fork some years later and that was a lot harder. I was known as The Captain.
Ive gone down twice, on this very river in Maine, the strongest rapids on the east coast, at a 4, beautiful..that was already 8 and 9 summers ago and I remember it vividly.
Hi ashuleh1: Yes Whitewater rafting is an extreme sport... But all of our guides are very well trained and certified. That being said statically it is safer to raft than to drive a car. We have milder options on the New River that are great fun, you could work up to "The Beast".
@dstar60 To be fair there's a helluva lot less people rafting than driving a car everyday of the year. So those odds are not quite fair in this instance.
I recomand two rivers in Bosnia and Herzegovina..river UNA and river NERETVA. Both of the rivers are 100%clean warher and every year they organise downthere international regata of rafting boaths. It is realy gread advanture.
is it true that when you go white water rafting, you row left to go right and row right to go left? I'm trying it soon and i just want to know. thanxx a 3.14 x a billion
Did the Upper G yesterday, it will NOT disappoint! Skip Lower, skip New do Upper G! This video shows it well except for the peeps gettin tossed out. Pure sweetness for the adventure junkie! We got stuck in the "Room of Doom" on pillow rock, but survived. The most trouble was in a class III called Fuzzy Box of Kittens. 4 outta the boat, two above water and two under the boat. All ended well and I get to give one of my best friends crap about getting taken out by a fuzzy box of kittens!
Only time I've ever been swimming was on that durn rapid. It looks like nothing, but rafters are like popcorn on that thing. I was fine, then next thing I new all I saw was my feet and then the bottom of the boat.
Pretty sure the guides let us get tossed around there intentionally. My outfitter set a camera up right next to Fuzzy Box, knowing the majority of us would be swimming.

Ive gone down twice, on this very river in Maine, the strongest rapids on the east coast, at a 4, beautiful..that was already 8 and 9 summers ago and I remember it vividly.
skymunro 3 years ago
This river isn't in Maine. It is in West Virgina. It is the upper Gauley and it is the best white water east of the Mississippi.

My friend wanted to do this...but im totally scared.
I know people can get hurt easily doing this so, id rather not.
ashuleh1 3 years ago
Hi ashuleh1: Yes Whitewater rafting is an extreme sport... But all of our guides are very well trained and certified. That being said statically it is safer to raft than to drive a car. We have milder options on the New River that are great fun, you could work up to "The Beast".
dstar60 3 years ago 2
@dstar60 To be fair there's a helluva lot less people rafting than driving a car everyday of the year. So those odds are not quite fair in this instance.

DaveTozer 5 years ago
Only time I've ever been swimming was on that durn rapid. It looks like nothing, but rafters are like popcorn on that thing. I was fine, then next thing I new all I saw was my feet and then the bottom of the boat.
It's awesome.
DrFrankLives 4 years ago
Pretty sure the guides let us get tossed around there intentionally. My outfitter set a camera up right next to Fuzzy Box, knowing the majority of us would be swimming.

This is by far the best fun my friends and I have done. Hook up with Mountain River Adventures, good guides, good food, good fun!
