  • A Bird At 41:36 ??????

  • Does'nt anyone just scoot up the west face?

  • Messner and Habeler sprinted up this thing. They beat the record by like two or three hours. They did it with one hand tied behind their back. It was a joke to them............K2 is by far the biggest mountaineering achievement. It dwarfs everything else. Has K2 ever been attempted in the winter. Never been climbed. Messner said other than the falling ice which is a REAL problem...........the avalanches......it wasn't that hard.

  • Jesus folks, an Eiger has stripes and lives in the jungle ! Get medications from a doctor, not off the street !

  • fantastic. i don`t climb any more, i can`t justify the risk now i have young daughters, but this makes me want to dig out my gear. onwards and upwards.

  • "magic potion strong enough to defeat the monster"

lol they took amphetamine! you'll have energy for +10 hours....not taking away anything from the climb I just think it's funny that they took amphetamine during such a crucial time

  • I watched this documentary 16 months ago and was terrified of heights at the time, I am now obsessed with rock climbing. Totally illogical I know, haha.

  • if my memory serves me right i can remember a film made about a climb of a mountain im sure it was the eiger cant think who was in it wiki here i come peace out

  • @ododargo There is a Clint Eastwood film called THE EIGER SANCTION made in 1975. It is about a group of spies climbing the Eiger and one of them is perhaps a double agent?. I can't remember the film that well as it is a long time since i have seen it and don't think that it is very good.

  • @MrRhar1 There is also a German film, in English called "The North Face" i believe. great film about the climb in the 1930's

  • @drew19860 Yes i have seen that film and have it on my dvd shelf as i speak, but (in my opinion) they spoiled an otherwise riveting film by introducing a totally unnecessary, unfactual and pointless love story into the plot...which for me spoiled the reality of the film.

  • @ododargo could also be a german film called "nordwand"

  • @ododargo could be the german film: "Nordwand"

  • GREAT Vid!11 But imagine, from being considered unclimbable, the domain only foolhardy daredevils contemplated, to those first tragic, halting triumphs, to being surmounted in 2 hours and 47 minutes! A VERY engrossing, fascinating mix of technique, history, style, culture, romance, sport and imagination -- Excellant! Well-damn done, I thoroughly enjoyed this.

  • @starmanskye If you enjoyed this one......then i can also recommend THE BECKONING SILENCE by Joe Simpson..also available on YouTube ok ..do a search for it.. and thanks for the comment.

  • I live in Alaska and that snow isnt fucking around.

  • Greatest last name ever.

  • You can take the train to the top of the Jungfrau for about $100 (climbing is free) it runs through the Eiger to the summit.

  • which mountain does he comment on at 2:54, it sounds like granduras but I can't quite work it out

  • @joshfcum grandes jorasses

  • Beautiful!

  • Didn't humans invent helicopters so we can get to places like the top of this mountain? lol Just kidding. I understand the drive for extreme experiences. Mountain climbing isn't my thing but I understand the drive. Just amazing!!

  • What's the piece of music right at the start?

  • @OldManInAVan I don't know as it's not mentioned in the credits, but a lot of the BBC documentaries are soundtracked by GEORGE FENTON. However, i had a look on WIKIPEDIA and he's not listed as having any part in this one ?

Can't help you sorry. Might be listed on the BBC website somewhere ?

  • @MrRhar1 Hmm okay, I'll have a look around. Thanks anyway!

  • seria bueno que este en español

  • The press back then just did not understand climbing spirit at all! The reporter at 47:00 sounded harsh!

  • The guy at 04.15 needs to sort his tombstone teeth out.

  • I get dizzy going up the stairs in my house.

  • EPIC!!!

  • need to see The Beckoning Silence

  • 57:00 i couldn't do it, climbing is the thing i'm worst at. i couldn't get in to the first floor window when i was locked out, drunk, one night, even after getting a neighbour, i didn't know, to help push me up.

the first floor window had been conquered once before when i was sober. i was probably the first in the world to do it too lol.

it was a great documentary, i like climbing books and docs.

  • Excellent documentary; almost as good as "The Eiger Sanction" movie.

  • chris bonnington's teeth are actually painful to look at

  • @EvelcyclopS I must agree, i had the same thought myself....and it's SIR CHRIS to you !! :-)

  • @MrRhar1 i've actually met him. when i was 9 i think in the clachaig inn, glencoe. or my mind might be making that up. not quite sure.

  • @EvelcyclopS mr perfect spoken wise

  • Eiger is piece of cake front of k-2 and Nanga parbat

  • @LionTipu I'm sure the 60-odd people who've died trying to climb it.....might disagree with you ?

  • @MrRhar1 No disrespect to those people, but I know by fact. You can also check how k2 and nanga parbat, gasherbrum 1,2,3 are more than 8000 meters high.

  • @MrRhar1 hahaha you damn right. They may be cursing at me from their graveyards.

  • @LionTipu Well, the mountain isn't overly difficult in of itself, but it'd be wrong to say that the North Face (which has claimed around 64 lives) isn't a dangerous climb. And let me just point out that both Nanga Parbat and K2 are over 2 times taller than the Eiger, so they aren't really comparable.

  • Great documentary. I'm just an armchair climber, but find the Eiger and the people who have attempted the wall remarkable.

  • @astroturf47 Yeah, i'm just an armchair climber myself, but my own personal fear of heights makes what these guys and gals do 'for fun' or for a living..... riveting stuff in most cases.

  • All i have to say is that i sat through the entire thing intently watching my screen on the edge of my seat. I'm pretty sure i had some drool coming out of my mouth in anticipation of the "Great Epics" that i was waiting to happen. Once they came my jaw dropped probably 3 feet in awe of these men who risked their lives for something most of us would think to be stupid, unworth it or just plain suicidal. But for them it's a proud moment, something they live for. In essence.. It's their legends...

  • @MrLinaxx I have a quite normal (seems to me anyway) fear of heights, so i've always found mountaineering books and documentaries fascinating, as these men are doing something which to my mind is absolutely crazy and yet in a way completely understandable. Maybe they feel more alive by being so close to death ?, but you'd have to ask them as you won't get me anywhere near a mountain peak :-)

Thanks for commenting and i'm glad that you enjoyed the 'documentary.

  • @MrRhar1 Well, so far i have only been sport climbing and i revel in it. i LOVE it. bouldering is also a favorite past time but to do all this with nearly no ropes is to me just preposterous.

The documentary itself was amazing, thank you for sharing it !

  • @MrLinaxx I think that i'll stick to the books myself, but very good luck with your particular mountaineering pursuits :-)

As far as the books go........If you're a book reader in these days of kindles and P.C's ?,

    i can recommend

'THE BECKONING SILENCE' by Joe Simpson - 2002 and 'INTO THIN AIR' by John Krakauer - 1998. I haven't read that many mountaineering books so far (4 or 5), but i remember these ones.

  • @MrRhar1 I am an avid book reader and always have been. And i am CERTAINLY wanting to read some mountaineering books. i will be SURE to pick these up. thank you for the suggestions! i really want to try and climb the eiger or everest but sadly the lady friend will not allow me to xD
