The word MIAO, came from, I think chinese, they call us that, for being quick and fast... And then when we got to Laos the name got stuck. I'm a Hmong-American and actually talking with Chinese people HERE, where I live, IN CHINA, it's not a derogatory term. Do you even know what Miao means? I fully accept Miao and Miazo-zu as a term for us. It's an official ethnic group.
SEA don't use Miao because it's not their word. They call us Miao in China because they don't have the words, thus Miao.
Another thing, Chinese are nationalistic and they're proud of their diverse land (50+ ethnicity). I know this because I have friends from Mainland China whom I've studied with and it's displayed all over the net (of course we can all see that). They like to brag about the many ethnic groups in their country... so, why would they brag AND call the Hmong "niggers" at the same time. It just doesn't make sense. Miao means green seedling; sprout; shoots of crops or plants. Miao as a classification of a group of people as in 苗族 is short (abbreviation) for the Miao nationality. It has nothing do do with dirt or someting always falling.
As you have probably know there are many types of Hmong or Miao currently living in China. Historically, the term "Miao" had been applied inconsistently to a variety of non-Han peoples often with the connotation of "barbarian." Thanks for the input, it is greatly appreciated.

The word MIAO, came from, I think chinese, they call us that, for being quick and fast... And then when we got to Laos the name got stuck. It wasn't unti we came supported the U.S. in the secret war against the north Vietnamese. We were to be called Hmong. The word, Miao is degrading. We fled into Indo China and parts of South East Asia because we chose not to fallow chinese laws and cultures. Those who stayed an became known as Hmong-Chinese are. Yes, Chinese do practice it, but not like Hmong... Txiv Neeb in Chinese is known as "Tuan Kung." Exorcist dance rituals are known as Nuo. Most Hmong in China today are Chinese nationals, but are not ethnic Chinese... Hmong in China still practice their ancient customs and etc.... very proud of them.

plus like the old folks say...if you want to find your relatives ask how they do their funeral...therefore when you can't find one like yours the next most similar to you is your relatives...but if you look at the picture as a whole...all three Miao (East, Central, West) or Peb Hmoob all share similar funeral traditions which makes us one...those who don't know white and green Hmong are the central Miao...

@sysu1 It only seems like the Hmong in SEA have a problem with the term Miao. Mee Hang, who is from China, calls herself a Miao in one of her songs. This lady, Ayouduo, who some claims to be Hmong (that's another debate) calls herself a Miao too.
I have no problem accepting the word Miao. However, I'm careful to not use it when I'm in SEA or with some people from SEA because they see it as a bad word.

They were the Liangzhu people. There are still Hmong living in the Hangzhou area...they are called She-min (Hmong) They more related to us then any other ethnic Miao branches in China.

SEA don't use Miao because it's not their word. They call us Miao in China because they don't have the words, thus Miao.

Another thing, Chinese are nationalistic and they're proud of their diverse land (50+ ethnicity). I know this because I have friends from Mainland China whom I've studied with and it's displayed all over the net (of course we can all see that). They like to brag about the many ethnic groups in their country... so, why would they brag AND call the Hmong "niggers" at the same time. It just doesn't make sense. The Miao are one of the most popular ethnic group if I'm not mistaken.

yes, she is not singing in mandarin. she's singing one of the three hmong/miao dialect in china. if you listen carefully you can pick up some of the words. BOTH AYUDUO AND SONG ZUYIN BOTH SAY THAT THEY ARE MIAO/HMONG, BE IT. STOP SPITTING OUT NONSENSE ON THIS VIDEO. EVEN HMONG CHINESE SAY AYUDUO AND SONG ZUYING ARE HMONG/MIAO. They say Miao is hmong. miao is just a way of chinese people call hmong. i heard that the word miao means dirt and always fail. something like that. not sure.

Miao means green seedling; sprout; shoots of crops or plants. Miao as a classification of a group of people as in 苗族 is short (abbreviation) for the Miao nationality. It has nothing do do with dirt or someting always falling.

Chinese folks will not know what HMONG is. Chinese recognize HMONG by Miao. There is a perfect explaination for it.

As you have probably know there are many types of Hmong or Miao currently living in China. Historically, the term "Miao" had been applied inconsistently to a variety of non-Han peoples often with the connotation of "barbarian." Thanks for the input, it is greatly appreciated.

theres over 100 different kinds of hmong and miao that is still living in china.
they call us "HMONG WHITE PEOPLE" Bai Miao. having the same meaning.
tho we may only be the sub-group to miaozu, we are still from the same ancestor. its really up to you on what you consider yourself, its not wrong to call yourself miao or chinese. tho you might not be 100%, you are still a part of it.

Don't waste your time. I have broken it down for them so many times and they outright refuse to know the truth and prefer to be angry. I live in China, now and the Chinese are nothing but nice and great to me and I'm Miao. The Chinese love Miao people now, unlike 100 years before. WE SAVED THEIR FOUNDER!!

Oh God... tell me about it. I dated a girl there once & I was lucky enough to decipher 20-30% of what she was saying just because the way she spoke was 'green' but with a chinese accent. I spoke plain 'white' and she had a hard time also figuring out what I was trying to communicate. the girl singing above, i havent a clue. Wonder if that is how true hmong dialect is supposed to sound like.
