It's the life clock of the dungeoneer called the life force. It's a knights head which falls to pieces slowly, When it disappears completely you're dead. You eat food and cast spells to restore it.

The life force is never consistent, it runs according to how well the team is progressing, you'll notice that it's always low when food is in the room...
