you can fracture a bone your back without damaging your spinal column. The source for this didn't go into much detail. You're right though, a properly broken back normally messes you up bad for life. But it can also be merely very painful, slow to heal and not medically any more serious than breaking anything else. He's a very, very lucky man.
I strongly doubt he'll ever be 100% again after this, but it's better than being dead.

people do this all the time. It's called base jumping. The chute worked perfectly at 00:07. He fell because he drifted against the dam at 00:12, crumpling the parachute.
