I'm only 17, but I go to Halifax every summer and I LOVE seeing the boys! haha last summer they played outside and I was lucky enough to be able to see them up close!
this song is incredible! everyone get's soo emotional when they play it
@metalheadquack I get what you are saying but...This is a much more harmonic version and just gives us another way to enjoy the song. Also this is a poor quality recording of them. Try listening to one of the other ones.
settle down donkeys..these guys are good they throw a great party, i seen them many times, and good fun everytime...beat it lame O's...! Haw....wooo!!!
If you have ever had a chance to see these guys live you would not read some of the comments that some of the clowns had to say. Signal Hill are one of the best live bands out there. They have you from the minute the first chord is played to the time you go home...and if you think that this is a poor job on this song....lets see your video...normally those who can't sing or play have something to say negative about the ones that can....jealous or enveous .who knows! hey sweet bippity bippity boo
I think these guys are wonderful...My little video - shot only on my digital camera can in no way capture the sound of the feeling of the original song. You would need professional equipment and to tap into their soundboard.
It's meant only as an homage to a great canadian talent that was lost too soon and because I like to look at it. Obviously some othe people enjoy it too hence the over 15,000 hits..
Mr. Rogers would be ashamed of your comments, he was a folk singer first and foremost; and the passing on of that tradition is most vital aspect of folk music. There is no place for elitists in this genre, perhaps you would feel more comfortable with some top 40.
They are certainly not Stan Rogers, but at least the lead singer is giving it a good shot. I would say that if the two guys singing back-up actually got into this song it would be a good rendition. But it seems that they suffer from apathy.. Anytime that you get the chance to sing "God damn them all" on stage, you shouldn't be sleepy about it.
Ahem.. I think something is lost in the video quality, but take my word, from one who has seen this fine group of musicians play this song live, they give the right honorable Stan Rogers a run for his money. In fact, if Stan was in the audience, he would be cheering as loud as we were. Don't be so quick to judge.. this band is a credit to eastern Canada.. they are an absolute pleasure to hear live. If you get a chance to see them.. I recommend you do so.
Woah, they would give Stan Rogers a run for his money? Hahaha not likely. These guys look like a great pub-band, but they are seriously not close to Stan Rogers. Please understand that I'm not saying that they are bad, just that they could be better. The lead is "giving it", but the other two just seem too sleepy for my tastes.
If I were in the audience, I would be cheering as loud as you and Stan Rogers.
this song is something people sing when there having a good time cause you dont have to sound good to be able to sing this song (why i love this song hahaha)
Hey fuck head!!! If you've never been to Newfoundland...You should keep you're stupid comments to yourself and learn a bit about the history first...if you have any intellect, you MAY develop a respect for the music!!!
You have comprehension problems, pal. My point was that Stan's original version is so perfect, nobody should ever attempt to sing it, and if they're going to do it, it should be more than a pub singalong for a bunch of fratboy-looking dicks.
Please accept my apology. I totally misinterpreted your original message and, yes, I tend to err on the side of miscomprehension at times...I'm Newfie...what do you expect...Again...Please accept my apology
Its amazing that no matter how far we go, we all want to be back down at the deck!

its allright, but you cant sing stan rogers with a melodic voice, you gotta have that rough fishmens voice with the thick maritime accent

Is it true what they say - that if you DON'T play Barrett's Privateers at the Lower Deck, you don't get paid?
canlitgal 2 years ago
I spent 7 years in Halifax and I never saw a night at the lower deck where this song was not sung at some point.
wdgarraway 2 years ago
Not only is it true, it's illegal to play at the Lowerdeck and not play Barrets Privateers!!!

It would be so funny if that got applied to the Rolling Stones or something

My objection to the video is that it doesn't start at the beginning of the song.

Nobody should ever sing this song... well, not like this anyway. They sound like they've been fucking neutered. A tragedy.
