  • I never really liked kata even when I had to do them. I will however readily admit to the inherent beauty in them. Still... I never, ever understood the yelling. It never sounds anything but ridiculous. Detracts from the whole performance if you ask me.

  • all kata and no application makes me a dull boy

  • check out my channell

  • Shotokan as always WINS!!!

  • Thanks for the videos.

  • the one placing first sounded like a kitten with a hariball but daamn his kata was sweeeet

  • Shotokan 1st Place as Always!!! :D

  • 4:07 Awesome turns!!! I am very impressed. Thank you for posting this video.

  • Their reaction timing is very rooted.

  • Wow. I used to be a green belt several years ago and thought Katas were cool, but I never knew they could look so god-damn awesome.

  • useless ridiculous shit lol

  • @SpiritMolecule1 agreed :P i dislike katas after being forced to do them for so long. Ive gained NOTHING from katas, they are boring, useless. When i sparred i learned a bazillion times more than doing katas for all that time... Sparring + full contact = win!

  • @pkhamidar2com of course, someone like you will never understand the true philosophy of karate. next time, you can compare reading a book with writing a book.

  • @doktormozg meh.... i can live with that. I used to do TSD but i moved away from that because i was sick of doing Katas, im now going to go into Judo. In no way is arts with lots of katas inferior to arts with less stress for katas but i just dislike them. Because the judo place im going to has no Katas but lots of focus on sparring, full contact and competitions, it seems perfect to me. Other than that, katas are pretty useless.

  • @pkhamidar2com Religion is also pretty useless. Govenment is also pretty useless. You cannot compare kata and sparring. Kata is useless for somebody who wants REAL FIGHT. In that case I will agree that kata's are not for you, BUT. They are not useless for everyone. Think about it like it is capoeira. It is a dance, but if necessary, it can deal some brutal damage. Next time, you can say that playing chess is useless

  • WTF those are some long belts

  • love this!!! not that "throw anything into a mishmash freestyle form in NASKA" nonsense!!!

  • Now this is KATA! <3

  • 3:30 to skip directly to the 1st place winning kata :)

  • This is the BOMB Son!!!!!!!

  • wow the 1st dont u think he is abit to to to to toooo FAST!! wow thats alot i dont think i can reach that in a milion years

anyway am at JION level still and it doesnt need that super speed it just need speed without super :P so thanks god :P

  • @ws957 yes you could he is human you are human yes you can do it just as well if not better if you put your mind

  • MMA has ruined Martial Arts. These young testosterone junkies know nothing of honor, respect , nor discipline. It's a shame how clueless they really are.

  • @chozn11 I agree, all arts are different, even including sports like boxing, wrestling, kickboxing. They are all effective and unique, i hate it when someone says oh karate beats tai kwon do easy, or kickboxing beat boxing etc... kickboxing is not boxing with kicks, they take things out aswell as put things in. Boxers excell in power, speed, attack/defending while moving, inside fighting and stamina. 12 rounds instead of 5. I belive that it is the man himself, the fighter not the style.

  • @ahwowlovely Really? Then you picked the wrong gym. And I would rock you in the first round, I can garuntee that. Any gym that jumps right in to fighting techniques is not a real gym

  • karate is super cool

  • the last kata by the French karateka is amazing. I can barely do the Heidan shodan, and that looked like a something out of a fantasy film, its so difficult.

  • OMG look at their perfect technique and strength...i wish i can do it as perfect as them one day!

  • Kata is like a gradma, real old and smells!

  • @DannySmithThe hell no its how u practice it might be a pain in the ass but your practicing punching and kicking and other stuff anf there are many forms of kata remember KATA IS KARATE

  • Bahah i love Kata :)

its funny though when i fight someone, i pause to punch them because i think im still doing it :P

  • Man they are fast compared to me

  • no that is how a kata is done not no xma sh,t that the call martaial arts

  • Kata was the first thing I learned at my MMA gym. It's definately effective to learn the basics before you start fighting. If you learn to box and wrestle and skip this, you will always have a disadvantage. Sure, you can punch hard or get someone in a leg lock. but good luck trying to hit a person with perfect-form kata or getting him on the floor. The guy who ended up winning this was great

  • it dont get no better than this. Nothing better than seeing a kata perfectly executed.

  • pretty good

  • This was excellent sportsmanship. showing top athletes at their game. The timing speed and precision was exciting to watch. this was a great demonstration of how Kata should be performed.

  • look the Bas Rutten kata and apologie LOL !!! is the best

  • Holy crap, these kata are freakin' beautiful.

  • :O A m a i z i n g

  • Well, the guy from japan made me laugh ! sorry but that was funny

  • ...........Amazing!.... :)

  • that's impressive ..

  • Damn, these men make me want to go back to Karate, respect to them.

  • quelle belle discipline:

    force, concentration, équilibre, respect

  • oh my god, that French guy is sooo quick!!

  • kata is art man. its is the artist's infinite masterpiece. to totally express the art in a systematic pattern is like watching the beauty of nature. for those who dont understand that pls seek a path to a peaceful suicide. or u can seek a real teacher and learn more than punching

  • @markell89 as musician, poet and graphic designer i can not see there any piece of true art. Art can not be aggresive as this, those are strikes that can hurt someone, but art praises life as i can say, so this is a piece of shit

  • @arekmondo I am musician, a poet, an actor, a dancer, and a martial artist. I understand where you are coming from, and to be quite honest, Markell doesn't seem to know how to put this eloquently. But kata's primal. it's a deeply spiritual practice that connects you to the deepest and most powerful parts of nature. I personally see art as a form of expression, and these artists express themselves in a much less subtle but equally spiritual way. On top of that, the true artists know not to fight.

  • @lilghandiji as that natural i can accept dance but not kata, martial arts were invented by human to hurt even in defense. this kind of statement of yours can be developed by interpreting kata through human-made prism, if u want to see true natural art u must throw away all subjective sieves which stops natural perception and gives u just what u want to see which always will be fake

  • @lilghandiji Horse crap!!

  • @markell89 LOL X^D love the comment and a totaly agree with you

  • @markell89 does the guy hafta follow the teacher or can he/ she make up their own form/cionn or kata...

  • @IsCumaFut2 it is possible to come up with your own kata, but these kata are traditional. these have been passed down through the decades, centuries even. katas like these, come in variations through schools, i think goju's bassai dai is different from kyokushins'...but one things for sure...these forms are the closest thing you have to training with your style's creator...you can make up BUNKAI...which are kata applications, but "kihon bunkai" are tradtional applications that come with the kata

  • Comment removed

  • @markell89 thank you for that.. well i have studied various forms from different schools... and most of the katas/ forms/ cionns are similar i notice.. i think they a re greta. i notice too that most guys when they do them are very aggresive indeed.. i think the BELT system is crap.. i like mister myagi's comment Karate here Karate here karate no here.. no need belt... belt only used to tie up pants... a belt does not mean you are better than anyone eles but a lot that have them are so arrogant.

  • @markell89 It's definitely hypnotic that's for sure!

  • @markell89 HEY!!!...we kick too..X3 na but you speak the truth

  • @markell89 puros movimientos robotisados, el verdadero kata se siente.

  • this is like ballet for guys that are still in the closet that have not accepted their true self hahahahaha

  • gay

  • Kata is to show form, speed, power and understanding of the basics. It's deceptively simple to watch, but you can work on one kata for a year before it's acceptable. To say it's worthless is only to show your ignorance.

  • @mousewallrat just wondering, do they put the moves together themselves? or is there a set form that they learn?

  • @mousewallrat Well, I have been involved for 46 years and what I see is virtually worthless. It is a martial art, not a dance contest. I see very little bunkai in these performances. However, I should not be surprised, karate is being maintained on Okinawa and corrupted elsewhere.

  • @mousewallrat Forgot to mention it's supposed to look like a fight.

  • @mousewallrat its only worthless in mma or a street fight but yes i do understand what your saying

  • @mousewallrat Well said. Some of this comment really must makes you smile. Saying that katas are useless is like saying that you do not need the letters in an alphabet to write a poem.Beside, katas are unwritten cultural treasures.Traditional MA will not work in real fight they say...well, karate always worked for me (and works for Lioto Machida too). Sensei Funakoshi said:'kihon is the basics, real combat is a different thing' Thanks to all these MMA evangelists for discovering warm water.

  • What the fuck king of competition is this!? Dance in a white garment, use self defense technique that would get you knocked out in any minor street or bar fight?

  • @ArtypNk you dont seriously thing they fight like that on the streets do you ?

  • @STimmortal No, I know they dont. How do I know? Because this thing is not martial art,, it's dancing.

  • @ArtypNk that what you call 'dancing' is a part of the martial art.

  • @STimmortal Table tennis is part of the olympic games. Technically - yes, objectively- it's a crap sport that doesn't belong there. Kata- same thing.

  • @ArtypNk see it as the theory stuff behind all the fighting...

This is just about correctly doing all the moves. if can't seem to understand it, too bad. It's fun learning to execute those series of moves correctly and just keep learning them better.

  • eu faço karate a um mes

  • "Damnant quod non intelligunt" - They condemn what they do not understand.

Kata is just one aspect of karate. The problem is not that it exists, but that people do not understand its purpose. Gichin Funakoshi put it best: "Kata is to be done exactly; Fighting is an entirely different matter." The original masters knew the difference b/w formal exercise and actual fighting. But in Bruce Lee's time, martial artists focused too much on form, not enough on effectiveness. You need balance.

  • i agree with you there about kata, i just dont think there should be competitons for it.

  • Nice fancy movements... but with no opponent you can not assume that these movements will be effective.

You have to flow and adapt to the opponent... REAL combat has "broken rythmn that a martial artist cannot anticipate but only react to---Bruce Lee

btw... I trained in Tae-Kwon-Karate for a few years. Now Krav Maga and BJJ.

  • @Carsonv1 its keeping with tradition of karate, we like to keep the true spirit of karate alive and not relay on riping the guys head off, if you know the moves that they are demonstarting then you would know that the moves break bones and kill, you cant demonstarte or youll end up killing someone. thats why we do kata.

  • you think this is the true spirit of kata? deluded much? the meaning behind kata is the understanding of the moves and the power and the execution, and being able to use these in real situations with minimal changes, not aking them as falshy as possible with stupid changes or doing them too fast for any power or technique. its ruining the katas and also burying the true meaning and original way of kata.

  • @rinuchi i am far from deluded, if u would heve read what i put insted of making up your own mind on what i said would have noticed that everyting u just put is the same as i put, read again and reply

  • lol... interesting observation

  • the only stupid thing is how ignorant you are to things you don't understand, but that's to be expected from someone who clearly has no comprehension of how or why kata is used. I don't blame you though, it's alot easier to just say you're an idiot then to justify a reason to yourself to go actually figure it out rather then say "hey everyone else says it's stupid, i don't know why it is but i'll just agree with them." Dumbass -_-

  • ky pa flok eshte djali hamdis hehe

  • wat style is that

  • Well... That's one way to vent pent up anger, lol!

  • All of em' was cold to me.

  • i liked it 5*

  • milon is the best...

  • he died some years ago from an overdosis unfortunatelly

  • Oh maybe that's why it says first place right before he performs!

  • He died from a cocaine overdose.

  • this champiships is WUKO or WKF?

  • Same organization. Former name of WKF is WUKO.

  • it's the same thing as WTF???

  • shotokan and shukokai i think

milon deserved 1st place his unsu was the best no doubt about it all

  • One of the sweetest kata compilations I have seen here. Awesome Suparinpei should have been first! Ken

  • Kata is all about understanding the principle of martial arts, not to learn how to use the actual movements in a fight. But I guess someone who actually is a martial artist does know that, unlike you, seemingly a keyboard-fighter...

  • Martial is the sparring side and self defence side of things and art is the kata side and board breaks etc. hence the word martial art.

If it were all sparring it would be martial sport (boxing, MMA etc.)

Don't like martial arts then go do martial sport.

  • Stupid, Knowing Martial Arts Helps A LOT In "Martial Sport" (MMA)...

  • Wow, I'm surprised that I wrote that comment a year ago. 0_0

I realise now that its best to have a combination of both so you become a better overall fighter and have a better understanding of how the martial arts work. I am now a very big fan of 'martial sport' and I use it in conjunction with 'martial arts'.

Karate and Boxing for an example (which Is what I do)

'Martial sport' and 'Martial arts' benefit each other in many ways as I have found.

  • Well, I'm Glad You See That. Or Maybe You're Pullin' My Leg. Either Way. It's Cool.

  • the japenese guy was the best by far in my opinion. the indonesian guy used to do unsu......it was alot better than the sochin.

which tournament was this btw......and what year?

  • what style of karate is this?? anyone know..

    realy good stuff!

  • its not only one style, the majority of them are shotokan style, the man who won the 2nd place could be shito ryu or goju ryu style, and the 5th place is shito ryu. the others competitors are shotokan style.

  • Excellent, the best Milon 4ever. RIP.

  • Nice kata compilation.

    Perfect stances especially Sochin Dachi

  • sakumoto sensei me gusta mas que abe...de todas maneras kata de competicion...no es kata marcial..demasiada estetica

  • You bet its good!!! WoW!

  • WOW!!!

  • I'm only brown belt at the moment and these guys look like they've been doing it for years so I know if I say they're fantastic people will excuse me... very impressive! That last guy... wow!

  • Perfect!!!

  • The movements are so P-E-R-F-E-C-T. Amazingly controlled with grace and strength. This is art.

  • Nice video. I like karate ;)

  • wow! Shame on you japanese... the western dominates your martial art. LOL.. just joking.. :P

  • lol but you won't be saying that if you see the jka japanese. lol they make all the performances here look like jokes......not that they weren't all really ood.

  • *good

  • WKF worldchampionships 2000 in munich, Germany

  • inspiring!

  • Great katas. I did unsu at USA NKF Nationals in 2002. Did it well warming up, but didn't do that great when I was in the ring, so I didn't end up placing.

  • lols.

    katas are for noobs.

  • Yeah, that's why everyone in that video was a black belt.

  • Awarded to them by other noobs.

  • Right. Two instructors that I have had have taught defensive tactics to police at police academies. And guess what these two instructors do a lot of when I train in their classes? Kata.

  • Whoa!

Those police must be REAL noobs then!

  • what's a noob ??

  • Jaebin is ;)

  • Excellent kata's, it's a shame that WKF now use the horrible kumite rules. They should have stuck with shobu ippon kumite. Much better, more tension and it filters out the best of the best...

I broke my toe 2 days ago doig that jump in unsu, i got it caugh in my gi in the air and i landed horribly lol. When I get better i'm really going to work on speed like these guys...

  • I like the new kumite rules better, personally.

  • I find it too bouncy, but i can't say I've ever competed under these rules so I shouldn't pass judgment. It's just when watching I prefer shobu ippon as it's very small, explosive action and makes me nervous and tense even if I'm not the one fighting.

  • u need a toe jam!!! ^.^ its like a door jam except it goes on ur toes!

  • Wow.

  • it was the world karate federation (wkf) world championships 1996

  • what competition is this can you please tell me? thanx

  • very good form, I'm impressed.

  • Nice video.
