I never really liked kata even when I had to do them. I will however readily admit to the inherent beauty in them. Still... I never, ever understood the yelling. It never sounds anything but ridiculous. Detracts from the whole performance if you ask me.
@SpiritMolecule1 agreed :P i dislike katas after being forced to do them for so long. Ive gained NOTHING from katas, they are boring, useless. When i sparred i learned a bazillion times more than doing katas for all that time... Sparring + full contact = win!
@pkhamidar2com of course, someone like you will never understand the true philosophy of karate. next time, you can compare reading a book with writing a book.
@doktormozg meh.... i can live with that. I used to do TSD but i moved away from that because i was sick of doing Katas, im now going to go into Judo. In no way is arts with lots of katas inferior to arts with less stress for katas but i just dislike them. Because the judo place im going to has no Katas but lots of focus on sparring, full contact and competitions, it seems perfect to me. Other than that, katas are pretty useless.
@pkhamidar2com Religion is also pretty useless. Govenment is also pretty useless. You cannot compare kata and sparring. Kata is useless for somebody who wants REAL FIGHT. In that case I will agree that kata's are not for you, BUT. They are not useless for everyone. Think about it like it is capoeira. It is a dance, but if necessary, it can deal some brutal damage. Next time, you can say that playing chess is useless
MMA has ruined Martial Arts. These young testosterone junkies know nothing of honor, respect , nor discipline. It's a shame how clueless they really are.
@chozn11 I agree, all arts are different, even including sports like boxing, wrestling, kickboxing. They are all effective and unique, i hate it when someone says oh karate beats tai kwon do easy, or kickboxing beat boxing etc... kickboxing is not boxing with kicks, they take things out aswell as put things in. Boxers excell in power, speed, attack/defending while moving, inside fighting and stamina. 12 rounds instead of 5. I belive that it is the man himself, the fighter not the style.
@ahwowlovely Really? Then you picked the wrong gym. And I would rock you in the first round, I can garuntee that. Any gym that jumps right in to fighting techniques is not a real gym
the last kata by the French karateka is amazing. I can barely do the Heidan shodan, and that looked like a something out of a fantasy film, its so difficult.
@DannySmithThe hell no its how u practice it might be a pain in the ass but your practicing punching and kicking and other stuff anf there are many forms of kata remember KATA IS KARATE
Kata was the first thing I learned at my MMA gym. It's definately effective to learn the basics before you start fighting. If you learn to box and wrestle and skip this, you will always have a disadvantage. Sure, you can punch hard or get someone in a leg lock. but good luck trying to hit a person with perfect-form kata or getting him on the floor. The guy who ended up winning this was great
This was excellent sportsmanship. showing top athletes at their game. The timing speed and precision was exciting to watch. this was a great demonstration of how Kata should be performed.
kata is art man. its is the artist's infinite masterpiece. to totally express the art in a systematic pattern is like watching the beauty of nature. for those who dont understand that pls seek a path to a peaceful suicide. or u can seek a real teacher and learn more than punching
@markell89 as musician, poet and graphic designer i can not see there any piece of true art. Art can not be aggresive as this, those are strikes that can hurt someone, but art praises life as i can say, so this is a piece of shit
@arekmondo I am musician, a poet, an actor, a dancer, and a martial artist. I understand where you are coming from, and to be quite honest, Markell doesn't seem to know how to put this eloquently. But kata's primal. it's a deeply spiritual practice that connects you to the deepest and most powerful parts of nature. I personally see art as a form of expression, and these artists express themselves in a much less subtle but equally spiritual way. On top of that, the true artists know not to fight.
@lilghandiji as that natural i can accept dance but not kata, martial arts were invented by human to hurt even in defense. this kind of statement of yours can be developed by interpreting kata through human-made prism, if u want to see true natural art u must throw away all subjective sieves which stops natural perception and gives u just what u want to see which always will be fake
@IsCumaFut2 it is possible to come up with your own kata, but these kata are traditional. these have been passed down through the decades, centuries even. katas like these, come in variations through schools, i think goju's bassai dai is different from kyokushins'...but one things for sure...these forms are the closest thing you have to training with your style's creator...you can make up BUNKAI...which are kata applications, but "kihon bunkai" are tradtional applications that come with the kata
@markell89 thank you for that.. well i have studied various forms from different schools... and most of the katas/ forms/ cionns are similar i notice.. i think they a re greta. i notice too that most guys when they do them are very aggresive indeed.. i think the BELT system is crap.. i like mister myagi's comment Karate here Karate here karate no here.. no need belt... belt only used to tie up pants... a belt does not mean you are better than anyone eles but a lot that have them are so arrogant.
@IsCumaFut2 or kihon kumite...which are some original kumite applications that most often originated with the teacher, or his first students that has been passed down through the years and hasnt been altered...but you can make your own kumite applications to help you focus on your body and how to best use it in a realife situation or just in kumite
Kata is to show form, speed, power and understanding of the basics. It's deceptively simple to watch, but you can work on one kata for a year before it's acceptable. To say it's worthless is only to show your ignorance.
@mousewallrat Well, I have been involved for 46 years and what I see is virtually worthless. It is a martial art, not a dance contest. I see very little bunkai in these performances. However, I should not be surprised, karate is being maintained on Okinawa and corrupted elsewhere.

What the fuck king of competition is this!? Dance in a white garment, use self defense technique that would get you knocked out in any minor street or bar fight?
@ArtypNk see it as the theory stuff behind all the fighting...
This is just about correctly doing all the moves. if can't seem to understand it, too bad. It's fun learning to execute those series of moves correctly and just keep learning them better.
some people talk some shit. kata is a training aid. we dont go around doing katas when we get in trouble on the street we use the fighting techniques that we also train very hard at. i dont think for one minute when i see a boxer using a speed bag he goes around fighting like that.
"Damnant quod non intelligunt" - They condemn what they do not understand.
Kata is just one aspect of karate. The problem is not that it exists, but that people do not understand its purpose. Gichin Funakoshi put it best: "Kata is to be done exactly; Fighting is an entirely different matter." The original masters knew the difference b/w formal exercise and actual fighting. But in Bruce Lee's time, martial artists focused too much on form, not enough on effectiveness. You need balance.

omg Kata is soooo stupid!! haha its like if boxers got together and had competitions for shadowboxing.... how dumb is this? how you fight depends 99% on you're opponent.. these guys have no opponent.
@Carsonv1 its keeping with tradition of karate, we like to keep the true spirit of karate alive and not relay on riping the guys head off, if you know the moves that they are demonstarting then you would know that the moves break bones and kill, you cant demonstarte or youll end up killing someone. thats why we do kata.
you think this is the true spirit of kata? deluded much? the meaning behind kata is the understanding of the moves and the power and the execution, and being able to use these in real situations with minimal changes, not aking them as falshy as possible with stupid changes or doing them too fast for any power or technique. its ruining the katas and also burying the true meaning and original way of kata.
@rinuchi i am far from deluded, if u would heve read what i put insted of making up your own mind on what i said would have noticed that everyting u just put is the same as i put, read again and reply

Wow, I'm surprised that I wrote that comment a year ago. 0_0
I realise now that its best to have a combination of both so you become a better overall fighter and have a better understanding of how the martial arts work. I am now a very big fan of 'martial sport' and I use it in conjunction with 'martial arts'.
Karate and Boxing for an example (which Is what I do)
'Martial sport' and 'Martial arts' benefit each other in many ways as I have found.
its not only one style, the majority of them are shotokan style, the man who won the 2nd place could be shito ryu or goju ryu style, and the 5th place is shito ryu. the others competitors are shotokan style.
I'm only brown belt at the moment and these guys look like they've been doing it for years so I know if I say they're fantastic people will excuse me... very impressive! That last guy... wow!
lol but you won't be saying that if you see the jka japanese. lol they make all the performances here look like jokes......not that they weren't all really ood.
Great katas. I did unsu at USA NKF Nationals in 2002. Did it well warming up, but didn't do that great when I was in the ring, so I didn't end up placing.
Right. Two instructors that I have had have taught defensive tactics to police at police academies. And guess what these two instructors do a lot of when I train in their classes? Kata.
Excellent kata's, it's a shame that WKF now use the horrible kumite rules. They should have stuck with shobu ippon kumite. Much better, more tension and it filters out the best of the best...
I broke my toe 2 days ago doig that jump in unsu, i got it caugh in my gi in the air and i landed horribly lol. When I get better i'm really going to work on speed like these guys...
I find it too bouncy, but i can't say I've ever competed under these rules so I shouldn't pass judgment. It's just when watching I prefer shobu ippon as it's very small, explosive action and makes me nervous and tense even if I'm not the one fighting.
I never really liked kata even when I had to do them. I will however readily admit to the inherent beauty in them. Still... I never, ever understood the yelling. It never sounds anything but ridiculous. Detracts from the whole performance if you ask me.

Well, I'm Glad You See That. Or Maybe You're Pullin' My Leg. Either Way. It's Cool.

what style of karate is this?? anyone know..
realy good stuff!
jessiininja 4 years ago
its not only one style, the majority of them are shotokan style, the man who won the 2nd place could be shito ryu or goju ryu style, and the 5th place is shito ryu. the others competitors are shotokan style.

Kata.

Whoa!
Those police must be REAL noobs then!

Toxeh 5 years ago
I like the new kumite rules better, personally.
statementz 5 years ago
I find it too bouncy, but i can't say I've ever competed under these rules so I shouldn't pass judgment. It's just when watching I prefer shobu ippon as it's very small, explosive action and makes me nervous and tense even if I'm not the one fighting.

u need a toe jam!!! ^.^ its like a door jam except it goes on ur toes!
