This version is truest to Reeves' intent thus no nude bar wenches, no Price Poe poems. altho they should have included cut scenes etc in the extras woulda been nice.
During this movie, the director and Vincent Price DESPISED one another and were constantly fighting and when it was over and Price saw it in a theater he "understood" why the director had been such a dick and wrote to the director saying "I understand now what you wanted." And the director wrote back and said "I knew you would."
Great movie, just watched it last night. Had a Michael Reeves movie week at home last week and watched all 3 movies mentioned. Loved The Sorcerers also.
That is not a rumor. I saw the uncut version at a drive-in back in the day and every version I've seen since then was cut to sht. The one I saw was crazy.
All very well and good, but the didn't burn the accused in England, they hung them.
Neither were they witches. They were unfortunate men and women whom Matthew Hopkins subjected to this horror for nothing more than money. He was well paid by a village to ride it of curses.
@smokejoe12345 I would personally let my kids watch any historical films such as witch finder general because that actually used to happen Obviously when there like 12 not any age below
Elizabeth Clarke was a one-legged widow. Matthew Hopkins was a young man in his mid 20s. Very little about this film is historically accurate. You'd be better off giving your kids some books to read.
hey guys, does anyone know about a horror movie that have that scene : it's like 17th century or so and armies are fighting and then there's like a chase or an ambush and when the knights take off their helmets it turns out they have animal heads, Rabbit, deer and something else, please if you remember it say so thanx
I completely agree with everything you said. I love Vincent Price no one could ever replace him and when Christopher Lee passes away all the horror actors will have gone :( noooo!!
The american version of the Conqueror Worm had all the extra gore in it.
The uncut version that exists is Witchfinder General with all the stuff cut out-put back in in a grainy cut which looks awful. Hard to believe after all these years, you can not find a decent uncut print...I guess you had to be there back in 1972, when 'The Conqueror worm shared the same bill with "Frogs".
By the way, 'Mark of The Devil' was exploitation crap...sure more torture scenes-but it lacked the realism of CW
No; the DVD being reviewed above is called The Witchfinder General, is fully uncut and has excellent picture quality throughout. The Conqueror Worm version only featured additional narration (not violence) of Price reading the Edgar Alan Poe poem of the same name this hasnt been in circulation for years though. The only other footage that exists is alternative scenes featuring nudity, though these werent shot with the directors approval and as such dont belong in any definitive version.
The Conqueror Worm had a scene in a coral which featured suspected witches poked and stabbed with pitchforks before one of them slowly had her eye taken out. In Witchfinder General-this scene is only partly seen and after the fact.Later on she was put on the ladder to be burned. Also in The Conqueror Worm, the ending showed Vincent Price get struck straight with an axe atleast 12 times before falling. Witchfinder General had the scene edited,
There were various closeups that were missing also.
No offense but your memory is playing tricks on you; the film was never subject to censorship in the US, so why would the reissue be missing anything? The only other footage that exists is the Poe narration, the alternative musical score and the nude scenes shot by the producer for the continental (european) version - none of which have any place in the film. I have both US cuts of the film (Conquerer Worm on VHS and the above DVD) and the main body of the film is exactly the same in both.
They're not Christians, my friend...they're the devil's spawn, without doubt. True Christians couldn't do that to each other. These guys were Catholics, but that's a pile of maggots I'm not going to get into. But you put forward a good point, though.
Matthew Hopkins was a Puritan. More often than not, witch trials in seventeenth century England were the projection of evil by Protestants onto Catholics, in order to have a justifiable reason to kill them. Sixteenth and seventeenth century Europe was probably the most Christianised society in history (see the Reformation and Counter-Reformation). The witch hunt was without any doubt a Christian institution.
But at the same time parents let the kids watch "The passion of the christ" The most violent and pornographic film that kids watch, though this film isn't accurate i'd rather kids watch this instead of fucking passion of the christ.
Movies today just dont compare to the films of the 60's and 70's,hell,the youth of today just are not as talented as the actors, directors and effects people of the past. CGI has made directors, set designers, effects team etc. all lazy. Same with music...todays music is garbage. Ah..maybe one day someone will come along and make us remember the glorious past of horror.
I don't think you can count Freddy and Jason (even though they are cool), becasue they are not famous actors, they are famous monsters. Unless you are a serious buff does anyone really know the name of the guys who play them? I mean, walk up to Mr. Joe Normal on the street and ask him who played Jason and they won't know. But people know Vincent Price. People know Karloff. People know Christerfer Lee.
I <3 you! XD I agree with everything you say! First off yes we have no real horror actors anymore other than Mr. Lee, and I count Mr. Nicholson one since he dabbled a bit in corman. Secondly, I don't know about you but when Mr. Lee dies, I will die aswell, (emotionally that is) because he is my idol, my living idol! I hope he has at least 2 years left in him cause I want to see him and Gitte meet their 50th anniversery. Haha, I don't have a Price sweater but I do have a Lugosi shirt. good points
Dear anti Indo European Witch Burner, the Pagan Celts did not worship your Middle Eastern Aramaic God or your Middle Eastern Aramaic Devil Angle who lived on the other side of your flat Earth heaven and hell concept. As born again Pagans Celts we believed in the reincarnation with nature which is based on the movement of the Moon and the movement of the Sun.
Halloween the Celtic Pagan New Year, which is in the remembrance of our Celtic Pagan Druid Ancestors who have past away. Halloween is a very special Day for the Dead and we honor them as our Celtic Pagan ancestors have since the Ice Age.
if you had bothered to learn about this period, you would know that Matthew Hopkins (ie the "Witchfinder General") was not acting in the name of the church and in fact he was being pursued by the law and the church for most of his short career, and in no way represented religion. Perhaps check your facts before you make similar unfounded allegations again. In more general terms, I agree that relgion has many bad elements, but why single out Christians, and not muslims, too?
The core philosophies of Christianity are responsible for witch burning. Witch hunting happened throughout the Christian world. Hunting witches is something a Christian population is prone to do. The Christian doctrine cultivates vengence and helplesses in humanity. I quit going to church after the pastor blessed the Guantonomo Bay interrogators. When will the madness end.
Christianity is bad for the heart and mind of humanity.
You are the only critic on here that I can watch! And yes it will be sad when Mr.Lee passes away but he is not all we got! We have the lover of classic HORRORS himself Paul DANINSKY Naschy who was doing werewolf/mummy/
dracula/frankenstein movies when everyone else
was doing mainstream horror. And we also have
Bruce Campbell/Angus Scrimm/Jeffrey Combs/Robert Englund, though mind you in no way am I comparing them to the GREAT Vinnie Price
