Roger Gracie is so siiiick! Yes he had the huge weight advantage but the fact that he was able to mount and choke out Terere with his classic collar choke is just incredible. Terere ... OMG... that guy is a legend. He has to be considered one of the greatest grapplers of all times, hope hes is finally recovered from the drug issue. BJJ needs him back! One of the best matches of all times and how the hell did Roger escape from that choke?

Technique has no weight difference, Terere took Roger's back as easily as he takes everybodies back, Terere finished finished Garcia easily. Nothing can be taken away from his skill, just watch his matches and see his technique for taking your back. It's an Alliance thing, all the boyzs from Alliance can take your back easily, Comprido, Leo, Ricardo and Marcelo. Roger won in the end due to his technique not his weight but had Terere got the tap it would have been due to technique.

Would you say that weight plays a roll in who wins when both opponents are equally skilled, but one is 40 lbs heavier? For example, would Roger be able to hold Terere down if he were not so heavy? Even Marcelinho's losses were usually due to even matched skill but way different weights. I've noticed over the years how lighter black belts lose to heavier ones that have similar skill levels. I have fought guys 15 lbs lighter and won, but knew that if we were even weight that they would have won.

to be honest it's not only the weight which places a factor.

it's more of the length the size and the strength of the larger opponent.

but of course technique plays the biggest factor. depending on your game. if you are a guard game player or a player who likes to work from the bottom, would find it harder against larger opponents. it's definitely harder to sweep a 230 pound guy. it's possible but definitely harder.

Roger's skill matched with his size plays a huge role in his success.

well said. Well said. smaller guard players will always find it harder with bigger opponents. They get stuck betwen a rock and a hard place cos if they try keeping top game they get put down &if they play guard its hard to control it. physical strength & agility wif size plays important component. and yes, its more to do with proportional height to weight cos you might have a fat short guy who weight alot but cannot use his weight and size to his advantage.

what amazes me so much about roger's old matches is that he always seems to escape what ever trouble you find him in.

i love this guys game, because i always know when he get's to the mat he's always looking to finish.

most new guys this days go for a sweep and stall their way to victory. that isn't what jiu jitsu is about.

i mean outpointing 20-0 is another thing though. but 2-0 really means nothing.

Roger would not beat Terere at the same weight class because Roger game is slower than Terere, Terere is a legend in the game with wins over Marcio Pe De Pano Cruz, two wins over Marcelo Garcia, one by submisson, he even beat the Gracie Bara Juggernaut Elvis "Nino" Schembri creator of the Go Go Plata. Although Roger is great he would need a much faster game to beat Terere. Terere has won a world tittle at every weight from white belt to black, No one else has done that!

actually, there is much more to that....15 lbs lighter...and if you beat them consistently, you start to get a feel of HOW and why ur beating them. But i dunno if you fought those guys more than few times.

Roger consistently submits more people close to his size and larger than Marcelo OR Terere.

Sure Roger's close to being submitted at times, but he escapes EVERY single one of them. Roger's height and weight plays a role yes, but his technical ability is top 3.

@G0dspelronin i know what your sayin, obviously weight matters at all skill levels in bjj but i think the higher skill level the less of a difference it makes, as white belts the heavier guy is more likely to win and the higher rank you are the more skilled guy seems to win (to me atleast) but what do i know, 1 thing i do know is that roger won this match with superior skill and technique

I left it that way because I know from training personally that I have beaten much better players than myself in competition because of a small weight advantage on my part. I hope that the newer players will keep that in mind as they win for whatever reasons. Your point is valid, as I have lost to a few lighter guys that had a really strong submission in their arsenal. I love BJJ because of this...all things are possible from every angle. Peace

Roger Gracie is a calm beast! however he would not defeat Terere at his weight. Terere is a monster at his technique, he fought in the open weight and defeated all his opponents until he meet the "Quiet Storm". You Tube Terere no gi matches and you will understand just how fast he can end a fight, Ask  Nino Schiembre the man he beat to become World Champ in 2000, ask Marcelo Garcia the man he submitted in the Worlds in 2003 and beat in a challenge match in 2003, Ask Matt Serra! Terere would not have the same game he has now with movement and lightning fast technique if he was 70 lbs heavier!! He would be a totally different grappler, slower and more pressure and strength orientated. So basically you can't compare how someone is in one weight class and automatically compare how they would be twice their weight. Roger Gracie would not be a master of the mount and closed guard if he was 155 lbs and had short legs!!!!

Don't make excuses for Roger, it was simply Terere's technique. He always takes the back of all his opponents easily. Roger gets credit for sustaining and then applying his technique. Terere is originally from Alliance, he came up with Leo Vieira, Comprido, Ricardo Vieira. Terere has two of the top blackbelts in the world: Rueben Charles and Andre Galvao are both Terere students, they are now with Alliance due to Terere's drug addiction problems. Roger was simply better on this day, no excuses!

Andre Was with TT, then when all the drama with Terere happened, Telles wasn't around either, so andre went with Brasa and Leo Vieira, When Brasa split he joined with Ramon Lemos and created ATOS JJ. I don't remember him ever really being Alliance specifically. (although all the lineage is rooted from alliance, one could argue)
