You cannot compare Ella with the rest of your selection...she out shines them completely. And you missed Sarah Vaughan
my god what an incredible ear this woman had. What a beautiful vocal instrument. It's listening to stuff like this that makes life's looniness bearable. thanks for posting
I think we have people that are quite talented they just don't get contracted because of how shallow the music industry has become. If my generation would open their eyes to this and stop prescribing mindless consumption of "popular" music- the industry would bring back the artists with true talent
Compare this with Billie's version: still a great interpretation with the original busy beat matching an urgent lyric, but Billie has that passion that no-one else can match.
Love this music...grew up with it, got away from it and now back listening to the best sounds around. Even have a grand daughter loving 40's music. She knows what good music is ;-)
@PaulGiffs Aww I love it! Reminds me of my mom, brother, sis and me walking into my grandparents house and catching grandma on grandpa's lap, tickling his chin while he giggled.
@PaulGiffs Your comment made me burst into tears! Your Dad knew what exactly these lyrics meant. Dance and love more and harder than ever should be allowed. In love. Go for it. Whether you are fortunate to have him or her with you or not. Because it does burn inside. Night and Day.
@PaulGiffs I have a feeling your dad knew ---"under the hide of me therer´s an oh such a hungry yearning burning inside of me.and it´s torment won´t be through til you let me spend my life making love to you---Day and Night...We were born thanks to this,do you find it offensive?
This is a fantastic recording. The drummer is swinging during an intro that's so simple, yet so profound. Then the band enters and it's like a feather softly falling. Throughout the tune, Ella does a great job elongating each note into the next, giving this standard that ethereal feeling. Hats off to whoever arranged the tune, truly a work of art.
Oh, my god....I believe Beyonce, Rihanna, Madonna, and all those rap singers never heard this....or they would be ashamed singing the trash they sing.
Porter.....why didnt I live in your days??? Have to listen all the crap I hear today in radios, MTV and Grammy´s awards.
@masefu0 That's hilarious. I agree. Im a young person and I can't understand the music out today. This is when women were graceful and music was left to people who could actually sing, and no who could not would ever try it!
I also can't understand the music that is out today either. Songwriters don't even write well-written lyrics today like they use to. Today it's like everyone wants to be a singer . . . . as long as they have an okay voice they think they can get out there in the music industry. But back then you had to be more than just okay and singers like Ella Fitzgerald defintely showed that she was more than okay! She was and will always be the BEST!
@ConnecticutsBest I grew up in the 1940s and 50s with this music. I like to hear these comments from young people as it says that this music will go on forever!.
Ella Fitzgerald is a romantic legend! You have such a beautiful voice. This voice is forever timely. You really are a divine Diva in the 20th century!
My goodness!!! She can sing!! She can REALLY sing!!! She blows rihanna and the others rite out of the water!! And I'm 18 yrs old saying this, I going to go get her music rite now!!!..
Ella Fitzgerald is waaaaaaaaay better than Rihanna and the other so called "diva" singers that are out there in the music industry today. Ella's voice was perfect in every way and didn't have to dress in a provocative way in order to sell her music. Ella had more of a great love for music than most of these singers today and you could see that whenever she performed. I recommend that you buy her albums! Buy "Ella Fitzgerald Sings the Cole Porter Songbook" set to start off.
@MusicLoverBrian1 Thats a cool opinion. I personally enjoy all of the female singers
today. I think that they are all good in their own way. But I agree that ,most of them arent the divas that the media has made them out to be(b/c the media makes those labels not the singers, sadly). And of course the labels are the ones that control a lot of the clothing choices as well.
@bakacakeychan Lol,its good to know that you like ella. I personally like her as well as alicia keys, rihanna and many others. i feel they are all great in their own different way.

(define old, however you'd like), but you can like everything. You don't have to just listen to this. I listen to Billie Holiday one second, then Metallica the next. Its OK
Wow! What a voice! What a song! Probably the greatest song ever written. Such passion, such emotion. If Cole Porter wrote nothing else but this song, he would still be remembered as one of the greats!
She is unbelievable.... so classy so talented. But like a lot of singers in the 50s, Frank, Dinah Washington, Nat King Cole etc... the record companies thought violins were a good idea... They watered down the swing. But hey it's still Ella.
Hate the opening, no need for it as its distracting. Not a big fan of scat and thought it was going there. The rest of the song gives Miss Fitzgerald an opportunity to flex her artistic muscle. Her version is the best of them all. Ella Fitzgerald was blessed with God given, remarkable talent. Wish I could've seen her in person.
Nobody but nobody, not even Sinatra, sings this song as Porter wrote it. He synchopates the rhythm and all the famous interpretations smooth it out. SSorry Cole
Day and night, night and day, why is it so That this longing for you follows wherever I go In the roaring traffics boom In the silence of my lonely room I think of you Day and night, night and day Under the hide of me Theres an oh such a hungry yearning burning inside of me And this torment wont be through Until you let me spend my life making love to you Day and night, night and day My live, My friend, My love...
Can't remember the composer but one of the great composers in the Songbook series that Ella did said "I never realized just how good my songs were until I heard Ella sing them".
Does anyone know of a good karaoke instrumental recording of Night and Day in the Ella Fitzgerald style? Any leads would be greatly appreciated! I'm trying to avoid something that sounds too synthesized, and ideally something with the big band background feel to it! =)
@Cloudjumper Thanks that you are interested, it was first sung by the greatest dancer Mr. Fred Astaire singing it for Ms, Ginger Rogers in the 1936 movie The Gay Divorcee

Love this lady what is so awesome is she was one of the most humble performers. Always giving credit to other people, how can you not love her for that?

Ella was great.
I think that the biggest talents are

For instance: Nat King Cole and Tony Bennett
